This paper gives an overview of some recent advances in topological approaches to analog layout synthesis and in layout-aware analog sizing. The core issue in these approaches is the modeling of layout constraints for an efficient exploration process. This includes fast checking of constraint compliance, reducing the search space, and quickly relating topological encodings to placements. Sequence-pairs, B*-trees, circuit hierarchy and layout templates are described as advantageous means to tackle these tasks. © 2009 EDAA.

A Simulation Study of Consensus Speed over Scale-Free Networks

Scale-free network and consensus among multiple agents have both drawn quite much attention. To investigate the consensus speed over scale-free networks is the main topic in this paper. Given a set of different values for the power-law distribution parameter γ, and a set of different values for the minimum degree ( d min ) for the nodes, the algebraic connectivity (λ 2 ) of the network topology is studied, as well as the time ( t c ) (or iteration ( k c ), for discrete algorithm) taken to reach consensus. The results exhibit that λ 2 decreases while γ increases. The λ 2 increases monotonically as d min grows, and they fit very well in a linear relationship. t c (or k c ) decreases as γ reduces and d min increases. Via observing the behavior of the largest eigenvalue (λ n ) of the Laplacian of the network topology, we draw the conclusion that the robustness over time delays declines while the robustness over node-failures and edge-failures increases.

Infrastructure management (and its associated processes) is complex to understand, perform and thus, hard to make efficient and effective informed decisions. The management involves a multi-faceted operation that requires the most robust data fusion, visualization and decision making. In order to protect and build sustainable critical assets, we present our on-going multi-disciplinary large-scale project that establishes the Integrated Remote Sensing and Visualization (IRSV) system with a focus on supporting bridge structure inspection and management. This project involves specific expertise from civil engineers, computer scientists, geographers, and real-world practitioners from industry, local and federal government agencies. IRSV is being designed to accommodate the essential needs from the following aspects: 1) Better understanding and enforcement of complex inspection process that can bridge the gap between evidence gathering and decision making through the implementation of ontological knowledge engineering system;2) Aggregation, representation and fusion of complex multi-layered heterogeneous data (i.e. infrared imaging, aerial photos and ground-mounted LIDAR etc.) with domain application knowledge to support machine understandable recommendation system;3) Robust visualization techniques with large-scale analytical and interactive visualizations that support users' decision making;and 4) Integration of these needs through the flexible Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) framework to compose and provide services on-demand. IRSV is expected to serve as a management and data visualization tool for construction deliverable assurance and infrastructure monitoring both periodically (annually, monthly, even daily if needed) as well as after extreme events. © 2009 SPIE.

An optical fault monitoring in FTTH-PON using ACS is demonstrated. This device can achieve real-time fault monitoring for protection feeder fiber. In addition, the ACS can distinguish optical fiber fault from the transmission services to other customers in the FTTH-PON. It is essential to use a wavelength different from the triple-play services operating wavelengths for failure detection. ACS is using the operating wavelength 1625 nm for monitoring and failure detection control. Our solution works on a standard local area network (LAN) using a specially designed hardware interfaced with a microcontroller integrated Ethernet. © 2009 ***.

In the presence of induction motor loads, long-term voltage instability may end up in a sharp voltage decrease, which makes the tuning of undervoltage load shedding more delicate. This paper first investigates the ability of a purely distributed load shedding scheme, previously proposed by the authors, to cope with these situations. Owing to difficulties to reconcile dependability and security, an alternative wide-area protection is considered. The latter consists of generators sending overexcitation signals to the load shedding controllers in order to allow the latter to act faster. Detailed time simulations of a test system are reported.

We investigate avenues for the exchange of information (explicit communication) among deaf and dumb mobile robots scattered in the plane. We introduce the use of movement-signals (analogously to flight signals and bees waggle) as a mean to transfer messages, enabling the use of distributed algorithms among robots. We propose one-to-one deterministic movement protocols that implement explicit communication among asynchronous robots. We first show how the movements of robots can provide implicit acknowledgment in asynchronous systems. We use this result to design one-to-one communication among a pair of robots. Then, we propose two one-to-one communication protocols for any system of n >= 2 robots. The former works for robots equipped with observable IDs that agree on a common direction (sense of direction). The latter enables one-to-one communication assuming robots devoid of any observable IDs or sense of direction. All three protocols (for either two or any number of robots) assume that no robot remains inactive forever. However, they cannot avoid that the robots move either away or closer of each others, by the way requiring robots with an infinite visibility. In this paper, we also present how to overcome these two disadvantages. These protocols enable the use of distributing algorithms based on message exchanges among swarms of Stigmergic robots. They also allow robots to be equipped with the means of communication to tolerate faults in their communication devices.

In this paper we present the model-checking module of decision-making models in the frame of ModelsCreator, an educational modelling environment. The model-checking module aims to assist young students to construct qualitative models for decision-making problems solving. We specify the decision-making models that may be built and we explain the model checking mechanism. The model-checking mechanism compares the student model with the reference model constructed by the teacher and provides immediate advice to the student to help him create a valid model. So, the model-checking module of a decision-making model aims to facilitate student to structure convincing decisions in the proper situations. © 2009, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing. In the traditional space mission systems engineering process (SEP), candidate architectures are evaluated by comparing multiple dimensions of performance against cost. Many of the key decisions within this process focus on trading different performance parameters at a fixed cost, or different levels of performance against varying cost. The selected system architecture is generally that which produces an acceptable level of performance at lowest cost. The SEP also generally only considers a small number of alternative designs, providing a limited perspective on what could be a much larger tradespace. The traditional process has worked well in the past, producing designs that optimized cost for a fixed level of performance. However, the traditional process is based on many assumptions, some explicit and some implicit, regarding uncertainty, change and the domain of control. Many factors once treated as static or having an acceptably slow rate of change are now changing at rates that are incommensurate with the current rates of execution of the SEP. The traditional process also does not capture the reality of the uncertainties that impact programs during development and deployment. We describe an approach to space mission systems engineering that incorporates changeability and robustness in order to address uncertainty and change. We discuss this value-centric design methodology (VCDM) and proposed framework for addressing changeabiliity and robustness under uncertainty. We refer to this approach as the value-centric systems engineering process (VCSEP). VCSEP is a dynamic approach to capturing stakeholder value value over time by applying multi-attribute utility analysis to the analysis of candidate system architectures and their associated costs. We describe a framework for VCSEP and some of the challenges to realization. It should be emphasized that the VCSEP framework does not provide a "turn-the-crank" approach to systems analysis. Managing the actions of several agents to perform tasks which require coordination and cooperation pose significant research challenges. One such challenge is to synchronize the agentspsila view of the system to help them take the dasiarightpsila actions. In this paper, we propose an algorithm called MRCPG (Mobile Robot Coordination Point Gathering Algorithm) for coordinating the actions of a team of mobile robots. The aim is to gather these robots at a particular location in a 2-dimensional plane which is determined during execution. The robots are randomly deployed in the plane and they achieve the goal by communicating periodically. In addition, we impose a reinforcement learning framework and the robots learn a shared value function (SVF) based on scalar rewards received. The SVF is used to select the best possible action in each state until at least one robot reaches the goal. Then a reach-distance heuristic is used to direct the remaining robots to the goal. The algorithm was analyzed through simulations for up to 5 robots and the analysis indicates that communication helped robots perform significantly faster than when they acted independently - measured using the path-length of the first robot to reach the goal as the metric. We also observed that increasing team size enhances the effect of communication and hastens task completion.

GRAMMAR (EC FP7) is a project aiming to deliver IP for future Galileo mass market receivers. One of the outcomes of this project will be an advanced Galileo receiver prototype. In this paper we present the research for finding the optimal dual frequency option for a Galileo mass market receiver. We discuss the impact of multiple frequencies on baseband algorithms and the implementation issues of a dual-frequency baseband. From the analysis results, we draw the following conclusions: E1/E5a combination is the optimal dual-frequency solution for Galileo;a common dual-frequency baseband architecture with flexible channels seems to be the best implementation approach for a Galileo E1/E5a dual-frequency receiver. ©2009 IEEE.
