software verification is one of the most important activities in the software development cycle, and testing remains the most common approach to verification used in industry. The goal of blackbox testing (functional testing) is to verify the system's adherence to specifications. The notion of patterns and scopes developed by Dwyer et al. provides a cohesive and rich set of examples to teach black-box testing strategies. A pattern describes a recurring software property, and a scope specifies the interval of program execution where a pattern must hold. A property specified using a pattern and scope combination has characteristics that must be satisfied if it is to hold. Based on these characteristics, there is a large set of behaviors that can be examined using black-box testing techniques. In a complementary fashion, the behaviors specified by patterns and scopes provide clear and simple examples that can enhance the understanding of these testing techniques. In this paper, we describe an approach and present general lessons and exercises that demonstrate how patterns and scopes can be used to teach boundary value analysis and equivalence class testing, which are two of the most commonly used black-box testing techniques. As a side effect of this approach, students are exposed to, and become familiar with, formally specifying system behavior. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Water service providers (WSPs) in the UK have statutory obligations to supply drinking water to all customers that complies with increasingly stringent water quality regulations and minimum flow and pressure criteria. At the same time, the industry is required by regulators and investors to demonstrate increasing operational efficiency and to meet a wide range of performance criteria that are expected to improve year-on-year. Most WSPs have an ideal for improving the operation of their water supply systems based on increased knowledge and understanding of their assets and a shift to proactive management followed by steadily increasing degrees of system monitoring, automation and *** fundamental mission is, however, to ensure security of supply, with no interruptions and water quality of the highest standard at the tap. Unfortunately, advanced technologies required to fully understand, manage and automate water supply system operation either do not yet exist, are only partially evolved, or have not yet been reliably proven for live water distribution systems. It is this deficiency that the project NEPTUNE seeks to address by carrying out research into 3 main areas;these are: data and knowledge management;pressure management (including energy management);and the associated complex decision support systems on which to base interventions. The 3-year project started in April of 2007 and has already resulted in a number of research findings under the three main research priority areas (RPA). The paper summarises in greater detail the overall project objectives, the RPA activities and the areas of research innovation that are being undertaken in this major, UK collaborative study. ©ASCE 2009.

This paper proposes a novel algorithm for categorization of action video sequences using unsupervised dual clustering. Given a video database, we extract motion information of actions and perform nonlinear dimensionality reduction for addressing both the high dimensionality of silhouette features and non-linearity of articulated human actions. A k-means clustering is first performed on frame-wise features in the embedding space to convert each video in the database to a sequence of labels, each of which corresponds to one of k "key" feature frames. The dissimilarity between any two label sequences is then measured using edit distance. The resulting pairwise dissimilarity matrix is finally input to a spectral clustering algorithm to obtain the category labels of each action video. Experimental results on two recent data sets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. © 2008 IEEE.

A promoter, the region in DNA encompassing a gene's transcription start site (TSS), largely controls the biological activation of the gene. The computational promoter prediction has been based on specific genomic context that promoter has in large genomic sequence. We aimed to detect consensus sequences of promoter i.e. TATA box, INR, CAAT box and GC box. The consensus sequence is an ideal sequence for the interaction with its regulatory protein. We propose an algorithm for consensus sequence matching called Horspool's Algorithm and extensions to this algorithm is to identify the position where these consensus sequences occur and give a score based solution on the identification of all these 3 or 2 or 1 consensus sequences. The promoter is recognized based on this score.

Producing software that is adaptable to the rapid environmental changes and the dynamic nature of the business life-cycle is extensively becoming a topical issue in the software evolution. In this context, change propagation (CP) process is one of the critical parts in the software change management. Traditional strategies have projected more complex ways, resulting to substantial failures and risks. This paper presents an investigation and highlights on the desired criteria to provide better means to simplify the complicated CP tasks. The evaluation results may be used as a foundation in improving CP approaches that provide significant challenges in software evolution. ©2008 IEEE.

The adoption of vibration interfaces in the games and the virtual reality is increasing since they improve the user experience. The principle of existing vibrating devices is to vibrate when detecting the presence of particular frequency bands. However such frequency-based scheme, according to our survey, cannot meet the user expectation;they vibrate too often and even at unwanted moments, having users feel haptically-numb soon and being annoyed. We develop a sound-specific vibration interface. It is wrist-wearable and vibrates at only designated target sounds. It uses a real time sound matching algorithm. Using the FFT, the algorithm compares the similarity of the frequency distribution between the input sound and the target sounds. In the performance test applying the interface to a commercial game, the matching success rate was 80% while the computation delay was 415 ms. Such results confirm the applicability of the proposed interface to the game play. © 2008 IEEE.

A fuzzy accident detector has been proposed in this paper. The implemented controller ensures a reliable margin for the speed of a car. This is done by carefully observing the skills of the driver in controlling the automobile during a critical condition. Since x- and y- accelerations of the automobile change sharply during an accident, such conditions can be detected. The system also updates the speed limits in different locations on the road. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

In order to evaluate the structural complexity of class diagrams systematically and deeply, a new guiding framework of structural complexity is presented. An index system of structural complexity for class diagrams is given. This article discusses the formal description of class diagrams, and presents the method of formally structural complexity metrics for class diagrams from associations, dependencies, aggregations, generalizations and so on. An applicable example proves the feasibility of the presented method.

Search-based software testing (SBST) has shown a potential to decrease cost and increase quality of testing-related software development activities. Research in SBST has so far mainly focused on the search for isolated tests that are optimal according to a fitness function that guides the search. In this paper we make the case for fitness functions that measure test fitness in relation to existing or previously found tests;a test is good if it is diverse from other tests. We present a model for test variability and propose the use of a theoretically optimal diversity metric at variation points in the model. We then describe how to apply a practically useful approximation to the theoretically optimal metric. The metric is simple and powerful and can be adapted to a multitude of different test diversity measurement scenarios. We present initial results from an experiment to compare how similar to human subjects, the metric can cluster a set of test cases. To carry out the experiment we have extended an existing framework for test automation in an object-oriented, dynamic programming language. © 2008 IEEE.

In the realm of substation automation (SA), communication infrastructure plays a vital role in mediating between physical and virtual worlds of substation. Specification of data exchanges through standardized communication stacks is therefore an important issue for all substation equipment manufacturers seeking to provide vendor interoperability. Nowadays competitive electric utility marketplace, reliable and real-time information become the key factor for reliable delivery of power to the endusers, profitability of the electric utility and customer satisfaction. The operational and commercial demands of electric utilities require a high-performance data communication network that supports both existing functionalities and future operational requirements. As communication arena is changing day by day, the need for efficient and reliable communication infrastructure to address SA is evident. In this respect, a communication network constitutes the core of the SA, thus the design of cost-effective and reliable network architecture is a crucial task. Most of the existing communication networks claim to address the need of communication architecture for SA but in some regard these claims just could not fulfill the constraints imposed by highly available environment for SA. This paper presents a survey and analysis of the current state-of-the-art communication infrastructure in the SA. As Ethernet technology becomes more reliable and also widely available with fiber optical communication so this paper also examines the key issues and requirements for Ethernet in the substation environment and also opens some research challenges.
