Around the world are increasing the demand for ESS. Currently, the domestic is expected to benefit by operating ESS. In the domestic, it is expected to benefit from operations of the installed ESS because of the introduction of ESS less capacity. However ESS capacity to the maximum profit occurs is unknown. ESS is different from the charge-discharge characteristics and the reserve to replace, depending on the application. Therefore, it should be established in accordance with the ESS optimal capacity according to the purpose used because it can maximize the quality and efficiency of the electric energy. To the ESS optimal capacity estimation by the purpose used, It should compare the investment cost caused by ESS facility installation and operation cost caused by operating ESS. In this paper, the operation mathematical model for estimating marginal operation costs established. In operation mathematical model, operating cost is considered fuel cost and no-load cost start-up cost. Because no-load cost and start-up cost are not related to cost and power plant output, there are expressed an integer variable costs as a step function. At present, electric power industry around the world are being gradually changed to a new paradigm, such as electrical energy storage system, the wireless power transmission. Demand for ESS, the core technology of the new paradigm, has been growing worldwide. However, it is essential to estimate the optimal capacity of ESS facilities for frequency regulation because the benefit would be saturated in accordance with the investment moment and the increase of total invested capacity of ESS facilities. Hence, in this paper, the annual optimal mathematical investment model is proposed to estimate the optimal capacity and to establish investment plan of ESS facility for frequency regulation. The optimal mathematical investment model is newly established for each season, because the construction period is short and the operation effect for the load by seasons is different unlike previous the mathematical investment model. Additionally, the marginal operating cost is found by new mathematical operation model considering no-load cost and start-up cost as step functions improving the previous mathematical operation model. ESS optimal capacity is established by use value in use iterative methods. In this case, ESS facilities cost is used in terms of the value of the beginning of the year. This paper presents a new approach to deal with the dual problem of system identification and regulation. The main feature consists in breaking the control input to the system into a regulator part and a persistently exciting part. The former is used to regulate the plant using a robust MPC formulation, in which the latter is treated as a bounded additive disturbance. The identification process is executed by a simple recursive least squares algorithm. In order to guarantee sufficient excitation for the identification, an additional non-convex constraint is enforced over the persistently exciting part.

In this paper, a methodology for a texture-based classification between sand and rock images will be proposed, and an object recognition algorithm is added for the sand images. Eighteen types of sand and rock textures have been used to extract different type of features which are hypothetically should help in the classification process. The features discrimination ability were tested and ranked using t-test and signal to noise ratio measurements respectively, and based on those, the features with the strongest discrimination power were selected to be used in the classification process to increase the efficiency and reduce the processing time. A back-propagation neural network classifier was trained using the best-selected features until an accuracy of 100% was reached. Different edge detection object recognition methods where used to detect objects in the sand images which was tested with 18 images and the result was an accuracy of 100%.

This paper introduces a recursive, sampling-based Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) approach to planning, i.e. receding horizon control, in continuous state and action nonlinear set-point control problems. Usually, predictive control methods for nonlinear systems aim at (sub-)optimal control behavior through solving a dynamic optimization problem over a fixed prediction horizon in every time step. Tree-based methods, which have recently gained interest in planning, model-based reinforcement learning and path planning, replace the optimization problem by an incremental probabilistic search for (sub-)optimal open-loop control sequences in the space of variable-length closed-loop trajectories. The benefit of using a weaker optimization procedure is that the algorithm is very simple to understand/apply and works for general nonlinear systems. This article is concerned with increasing the control performance and sampling-efficiency of MCTS in continuous state and action spaces based on ideas from the field of standard nonlinear model predictive control.

Climate change is challenging the current worldwide model of power generation. In this sense, European Union is promoting a deep transition collected in the 20-20-20 targets and the 2050 Energy Roadmap. These adjectives must be achieved by developing the use of clean, carbon-free energies, as it is the case of the renewableenergies and in particular of the ocean energy. The main problem with these kinds of energies is to reach a commercially mature stage so they can compete with conventional power sources. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce generation costs and increase the efficiency of the existing devices. With this regard, thework presents the modelling and experimental validation of the capture chamber of an Oscillating Water Column (OWC)-based powerplant. Although the study of the turbine and the generator may be considered a quite well-known matter, the control-oriented modelling of the capture chamber still deserves a further study to improve the power generation. In this work, a model obtained analytically of the OWC chamber is developed and numerically implemented. The model proposed is also validated and affords excellent results.

This article covers research into cost reduction pathways for wave energy. The primary focus is the development and test of reliable and controllable power take-off (PTO) technology for oscillating water column converters (OWC). This is highly relevant to the ocean energy challenge. Extensive testing via data of the NEREIDA MOWC demonstration project, a breakwater wave plant located in the Basque location of Mutriku, using Wells turbines and Doubly Fed Induction (DFIG) generators is proposed to advance wave energy converter (WEC) devices. The control tests involve the integration of the PTO technology within a new variable controller for OWC wave power generation plants. Due to the nature of the control law, it allows monitoring faults caused by parametrical errors or system disturbances. The reliability tests by means of analysing the electrical signals have been conceived as conditioning monitoring, detection of mechanical faults and hardware damaging also fulfil a secondary aim for the reduction of maintenance cost and unscheduled downtime during operation of OWC plants.

This paper focuses on the powers control of a photovoltaic generator connected to a single- phase grid. In addition to the solar panels, the system is equipped with a dc-dc converter, which allows the panels' maximum power point to be tracked, a single phase inverter, a filter, and loads, all connected to a single phase utility grid. In this study, the voltage oriented control method is used to control the power injected into the grid during the daytime, taking into account the grid characteristics. Simulation results are shown for the analysis of performance of a grid-coupled PV system under solar radiation change.

The typical conventional battery charger requires the two separated voltage and current compensators to achieve both the constant current and the constant current (CC-CV) charging profile. This paper proposes a single integrated voltage-current compensator of the LLC resonant converter for lithium-ion battery charger applications. The proposed compensator is designed to provide a smooth and reliable performance during entire charging process, while providing the reduced design efforts and seamless mode transient response due to its inherent integration. The theoretical analysis and the design consideration of the proposed compensator is illustrated based on a frequency response domain, especially with the considerations of the nonlinearly varied equivalent resistor and/or effective capacitance based on the proposed battery model, and as a result, the integrated compensator guarantees a stable and robust operation. Finally several experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed posed compensator and its theoretical analysis.

Disturbance attenuation is often recognized as the primary concern of a control system. Regulation of the operating conditions is the usual task work to be pursued by a feedback controller. However, much of the academic works almost concentrate on set-point experiments for controller evaluation. Even those that explicitly concentrate on the disturbance attenuation problem, usually concentrate on input load disturbances. They exclude the specific, but usually not considered in the literature, case when the path from the disturbance to the controlled variable is different to the path from the controller output to the controlled variable. There are some process units such as heat exchangers or distillation columns where this situation may be encountered. However actual feedback controllers, usually of PI/PID type, do not take into account this situation. The point raised in this paper is that an increment of performance can be obtained if the information regarding the disturbance dynamics is included in the PI/PID design stage.
