Data Modeling is an essential first step for data preparation in any data mining procedure. Conventional entity-relational (E-R) data modeling is lossy, irreproducible, and time-consuming especially when dealing with unstructured image data associated with complex systems like the human brain. We propose a methodological framework for more objective E-R data modeling by eliminating the structured content-dependent metadata associated with the unstructured data. The proposed method is applied to epilepsy-related image data and a system called the human brain image database system (HBIDS) is developed accordingly. Supported with navigation, segmentation, data fusion, and feature extraction modules, HBIDS provides a content-based support environment (C-BASE). Such an environment potentially provides an unlimited (ad hoc) query support with a reproducible and efficient database schema. Switching between different modalities of data, while confining the feature extractors within the object(s) of interest, HBIDS yields anatomically specific query results. The price of such scheme is large storage requirements and relatively high computational cost. Examples of navigation through unstructured image data and content-based retrieval are presented in this paper. The results show the potential of HBIDS in content-based data management for decision support systems in real life medical applications. © 2007 IEEE.

According to the Gestalt principals, in this paper, we model features for measuring the attraction degree between couples of image components, and grouping areas in trademark images are recognized. This investigation would be used for content-based image retrieval from the view of mirroring human perception for images. The features of proximity, shape similarity, closure, and good continuation are extracted from every combination of two components in an image. After that, according to results of the judgments, a grouping pattern for the query is fixed. Besides, changing combination of the features, the proposed method can output plural grouping patterns. In the experiments, we have evaluated the proposed method on 74 test images comparing between outputs by the proposed method and grouping patterns for the test images obtained from results of questionnaires by 104 participants.

Application of fuzzy logic in weighted information of fusion fingerprints and palm prints

It is a developing job to distinguish identifications with information fusion of fingerprints and palm prints. It is also a very effective way to resolve the problem of low identification rate and low stability of single biology characteristic identification. Based on the theory of fuzzy logic theory, we bring out the method of obfuscating weigh coefficient and reliability to fuse the information of fingerprints and palm prints to realize high identification rate. The experiment proves the feasibility and effectiveness of this method and the identification rate can be more than 90%, which contributes useful experience to the research of identification using biology characteristics.

This paper introduces a new Motion-SPM (Smart Power Modules) module in Single In-line Package (SIP), which is a fully optimized intelligent integrated IGBT inverter module for up to 1kW low power motor drive applications. This module offers a sophisticated, integrated solution and tremendous design flexibilty. It also takes advantage of pliability for the arrangement of heat-sink due to two types of lead forms. It utilizes non-punch-through (NPT) IGBT with a fast recovery diode and highly integrated building block, which features built-in HVICs and a gate driver that offer more simplicity and compactness leading to a reduced costs and high reliability of the entire system. This module also provides technical advantages such as the good thermal performances through IMS (Insulated Metal Substrate), the high latch immunity. This paper provides an overall description of the Motion-SPM in SIP as well as actual application issues such as electrical characteristics, circuit configurations and power ratings.

New algorithm for infrared small target image enhancement based on wavelet transform and human visual properties

The key to the wavelet based denoising teehniquea is how to manipulate the wavelet coefficients. By referring to the idea of Inclusive-OR in the design of circuits, this paper proposes a new algorithm called wavelet domain Inclusive-OR denoising algorithm（WDIDA）, which distinguishes the wavelet coefficients belonging to image or noise by considering their phases and modulus maxima simultaneously. Using this new algorithm, the denoising effects are improved and the computation time is reduced. Furthermore, in order to enhance the edges of the image but not magnify noise, a contrast nonlinear enhancing algorithm is presented according to human visual properties. Compared with traditional enhancing algorithms, the algorithm that we proposed has a better noise reducing performanee , preserving edges and improving the visual quality of images.

An adaptive target queue length (ATQL) adjustment algorithm proposed in this paper cooperates with certain Active Queue Management (AQM) controllers to achieve more efficient buffer management for Internet congestion control. ATQL algorithm which estimates the average traffic load and dynamically adjusts the target queue length in dynamic traffic environment can be easily embedded into a series of AQM controllers. By engaging ATQL, AQM controllers are more suited to random and unpredictable traffic scenarios. Simulations are applied to validate ATQL's ability in assisting AQM controllers in sustaining stable drop probability, minimizing unnecessary packet loss, guaranteeing the link utility and maximizing the exploitation of buffer spaces.

A physiological model integrating a pulsatile cardiovascular system model with a model of the pulmonary capillary fluid exchange based on the Starling's equations is proposed in order to analyse the micro-circulatory physiological alterations which occur during the evolution of sepsis. Sepsis-induced acute lung injury is typically characterized by an increased microvascular permeability and interstitial edema. Pulmonary edema occurs because the capillary filtration capacity increases and the reflection coefficient to proteins decreases causing fluid leak across the capillary barrier. Patients with severe sepsis may develop respiratory failure and hence requiring ventilatory support. These signs represent the clinical expression of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and are associated with high mortality in medical intensive care units (ICU). The proposed model is used to simulate the cardiovascular hemodynamics under these complex pathophysiological conditions. Copyright © 2006 IFAC.

A comparative analysis on vector-controlled induction motor drive with efficiency optimization using a neural-network-based and a model-losses-based approaches as flux estimator is presented in this paper. On-line estimators for rotor, stator resistances, and mutual inductance are included, two different neural networks were trained varying their inputs, and was used the losses-model-based estimator with some estimated and nominal parameters. Modeling and simulation results are presented to confirm the best performance approach. © 2006 IEEE.

Flow-level traffic measurement is important for network management. The widely used centralized per-flow measurement faces a great challenge due to the demanding requirement on both memory bandwidth and memory size within a single traffic monitor. This paper addresses the issue of deploying a Distributed Passive Measurement system (DPMS) in a large scale network;specifically, we study how to optimally place traffic monitors and sample stochastic traffic flows, so that the probability of a packet being sampled (a.k.a. measurement coverage) is maximized. We formulate this problem as a Stochastic Chance Constrained Optimization (SCCO) problem;and we propose a Hybrid Intelligent (HI) algorithm to solve this problem. The HI algorithm consists of two major components, namely, uncertain function approximation and genetic algorithm. Equipped with the HI algorithm, we are able to address the optimal tradeoff between measurement coverage and deployment cost for networks with random traffic, which has not been studied before. Our simulations and experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm, i.e., a small deployment cost or a small number of monitors are sufficient to maintain a high level of measurement coverage. © 2006 IEEE.
