The present paper introduces a comparative analysis of the management of a stochastic optimization problem using both a risk deterministic approach and a support vector machine strategy. This optimization problem is formulated in consideration of the influence produced by environmental factors, such as irradiance and temperature, on a photovoltaic panel. The problem will be solved by applying both methods to determine the Maximum Power Point (MPP), thereby to enhance the power generation efficiency. The primary objective is to conduct an analysis comparing the two approaches, with the aim of recommending the most suitable approach for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Integrating digital data and human sensory input in real-world settings offers new possibilities in device diagnostics and maintenance. In this study, we utilized the EcoStruxure Augmented Operator Advisor to develop an augmented reality application for a family house heating system. Our application was designed without access to the real heating system;instead, we simulated its operation with a programmable logic controller. Our final application includes three primary scenes: the heat pump, its indoor unit, and the engine room. Drawing on our practical experience, we discuss the benefits of our approach and the software tools used and summarize our subjective opinions. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper aims to achieve single-channel target speech extraction (TSE) in enclosures by solely utilizing distance information. This is the first work that utilizes only distance cues without using speaker physiological information for single-channel TSE. Inspired by recent single-channel Distance-based separation and extraction methods, we introduce a novel model that efficiently fuses distance information with time-frequency (TF) bins for TSE. Experimental results in both single-room and multi-room scenarios demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach. This method can also be employed to estimate the distances of different speakers in mixed speech. Online demos are available at https://***/distance-demo-page/. © 2025 IEEE.

Faulty meters, billing inaccuracies and fraudulent activity all contribute to the non-technical losses experienced by power utilities. Apart from the intended advantage of billing efficiency, the advent of smart meters for consumption and load profile logging, has made possible the analysis of subscriber data for load balancing and consumer classification, amongst other uses. This study analyses data from smart meters in Malta and develops a method for anomaly detection aiming to identify costumers contributing to non-technical losses. Consumers are grouped into clusters with similar weekly consumption patterns using hierarchical clustering. For each consumer, two novel coefficients are then computed: the Anomaly Coefficient, which measures the divergence in consumption patterns for a consumer from all other member of the same cluster, and the Cluster Change Coefficient, which quantifies the likelihood of a customer to exhibit patterns associated with other clusters. Together these two measures are joined in a single Anomaly Score, thus identifying consumers with highly irregular consumption patterns. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper discusses methods for estimating the electrical parameters of payloads (transponders) of communications spacecraft using digital modulation signals. To estimate the parameters, the processing of the quadrature signal at the output of the transponder, obtained during the signal constellation measurements, as well as the determination of the amplitude of the error vector in the testing process, is used. Application of these methods allows to significantly reduce the test duration and improve the test procedure based on the identified factors affecting the amplitude of the error vector. The study of electrical parameters of payload of communication spacecraft is an important aspect of their operation. Repeaters that provide ground-to-spacecraft communications must operate reliable and efficiently. The evaluation of these parameters allows optimizing the testing process and providing more accurate results. Digital modulation signals are widely used in modern communication systems. They allow you to transmit data at high speed and minimize signal distortion. However, for the correct operation of repeaters, it is necessary to accurately estimate their electrical parameters. The application of these methods reduces the duration of tests, which is especially important in the development and testing of a spacecraft. This also reduces the cost of testing and ensures the accuracy of the results. Digital modulation signals are also more reliable than analog modulation signals, making them an ideal choice for space-based communication systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Robust fault detection is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of complex engineering systems. However, distinguishing faults from disturbances and model uncertainty which are inherently present in any practical system remains remains a challenging task. This paper addresses the robust fault detection filter design problem for continuous-time linear time-invariant uncertain systems operating in open or closed-loop configurations. The proposed framework offers a unified approach to handle both parametric and dynamic uncertainties by solving a single Riccati equation, based on a worst-case disturbance and uncertainty scenario. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a numerical multivariable double mass-spring-damper system. The results illustrate that an optimal compromise is achieved between fault sensitivity and rejection of modelling uncertainties and disturbances. This capability enables the clear differentiation between faults and undesired effects in the residuals, thereby enhancing fault detection reliability, ultimately contributing to improved safety and performance. © 2024 IEEE.

This article utilizes the flatness property of the nonlinear model of the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) to design a Flatness-Based Trajectory-Tracking control (FBTTC). Focusing on the Single input single output (SISO) case, first principles of mass and temperature balance of the reactor are used in the modeling and control design. The flatness-spaces modeling task is carried out assuming two cases of selected flat outputs along with a finite number of their time derivative. The reactor temperature and the concentration are selected as flat output in each case separately. For trajectory tracking control problem, both differential flatness-based control and Feedback Linearization-Based control (FBLBC) are derived and simulated, enabling a comparison between the two methods. The chosen approach emphasizes the simplicity and high accuracy of control design using flatness property for the examined nonlinear system. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a signal processing framework for automatic anxiety level classification in a virtual reality exposure therapy system. Two types of biophysical data (heart rate and electrodermal activity) were recorded, pre-processed and passed through a feature extraction procedure that provided input for the real-time anxiety level classification algorithm. We showcase the mathematical and engineering techniques behind the procedures and conclude with the challenges encountered in our research and future development ideas. The proposed method provides a good estimate of the level of anxiety while having at the same time a reduced level of complexity, allowing implementation on equipment with limited computing resources. © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. This paper presents a novel methodology for closed-loop system identification of unstable nonlinear systems using the Koopman operator with Extended Dynamic Mode Decomposition with control (EDMDc). The study highlights the critical role of selecting appropriate observable functions to develop accurate and efficient Koopman models. We demonstrate that the resulting Koopman models exhibit excellent fitting and validation properties and retain the stabilizability of the original nonlinear systems. These models are verified through time and frequency responses under closed-loop control using a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), confirming their effectiveness. Future work will extend this framework to more complex systems and incorporate machine learning techniques to refine the selection of observable functions. This approach aims further to enhance the adaptability and robustness of Koopman-based control strategies. © 2025 IEEE.
