Quantifying the quality of indoor maps

Indoor maps are required for multiple applications, such as, navigation, building maintenance and robotics. One of common methods for map generation is laser scanning. In such maps, not only geometry of the map is of interest, but also its quality. This study aims at developing methods for real-time generation of indoor maps using features extracted from pointclouds obtained by a robot with their simultaneous quality assessment. We investigate, how this quality can be quantified for feature-based maps. First, we introduce a method for modeling 2D maps into 3D models that enable their usage for localization. Second, we review and evaluate a number of algorithms that can enable us to address features in a map. Hence, we enable the generation of objects from a pointcloud that has been sensed. Finally, we study several aspects of the map quality and we formalize them into metrics that can be applied to quantify their quality. © Authors 2019.

Spectral measurements provide valuable information on the electronic states and crystal structures of materials. In particular, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) can facilitate analysis of the chemical bond state of material surfaces. In the analysis of XPS spectra, the spectrum to be measured is typically compared to a reference spectrum measured on a known single-phase sample. Therefore, establishing a reference spectral database is imperative. In this study, round-robin tests of XPS spectra are performed with the aim of obtaining recommended XPS reference spectra and experimental procedures, including preprocessing. Determining the variations in peak structures between instrument- and sample-derived spectral shapes, and quantitatively discussing them in round-robin tests of XPS spectra are challenging. Therefore, an analysis method that automatically determines the above mentioned variations and extracts the samplederived common spectral structures is developed. Psychological network approaches propose to see symptoms or questionnaire items as interconnected nodes, with links between them reflecting pairwise statistical dependencies evaluated on cross-sectional, time-series, or panel data. These networks constitute an established methodology to assess the interactions and relative importance of nodes/indicators, providing an important complement to other approaches such as factor analysis. However, focusing the modelling solely on pairwise relationships can neglect potentially critical information shared by groups of three or more variables in the form of higher-order interdependencies. To overcome this important limitation, here we propose an information-theoretic framework based on hypergraphs as psychometric models. As edges in hypergraphs are capable of encompassing several nodes together, this extension can thus provide a richer representation of the interactions that may exist among sets of psychological variables. Our results show how psychometric hypergraphs can highlight meaningful redundant and synergistic interactions on either simulated or state-of-art, re-analyzed psychometric datasets. Overall, our framework extends current network approaches while leading to new ways of assessing the data that differ at their core from other methods, extending the psychometric toolbox and opening promising avenues for future investigation. © 2022, CC BY.

Patents serve as valuable indicators of innovation and provide insights into the spaces of innovation and venture formation within geographic regions. In this study, we utilise patent data to examine the dynamics of innovation and venture formation in the biotech sector across the United Kingdom (UK). By analysing patents, we identify key regions that drive biotech innovation in the UK. Our findings highlight the crucial role of biotech incubators in facilitating knowledge exchange between scientific research and industry. However, we observe that the incubators themselves do not significantly contribute to the diversity of innovations which might be due to the underlying effect of geographic proximity on the influences and impact of the patents. These insights contribute to our understanding of the historical development and future prospects of the biotech sector in the UK, emphasising the importance of promoting innovation diversity and fostering inclusive enterprise for achieving equitable economic growth. © 2023, CC BY.

Our society has never been more dependent on computer networks. Effective utilization of networks requires a detailed understanding of the normal background behaviors of network traffic. Large-scale measurements of networks are computationally challenging. Building on prior work in interactive supercomputing and GraphBLAS hypersparse hierarchical traffic matrices, we have developed an efficient method for computing a wide variety of streaming network quantities on diverse time scales. Applying these methods to 100,000,000,000 anonymized source-destination pairs collected at a network gateway reveals many previously unobserved scaling relationships. These observations provide new insights into normal network background traffic that could be used for anomaly detection, AI feature engineering, and testing theoretical models of streaming networks. In this paper we introduce the fractional-order variant of a Gompertz-like discrete system. The chaotic behavior is suppressed with an impulsive control algorithm. The numerical integration and the Lyapunov exponent are obtained by means of the discrete fractional calculus. In this paper the chaos control in the discrete logistic map of fractional order is obtained with an impulsive control algorithm. The underlying discrete initial value problem of fractional order is considered in terms of Caputo delta fractional difference. Every ∆ steps, the state variable is instantly modified with the same impulse value, chosen from a bifurcation diagram versus impulse. It is shown that the solution of the impulsive control is bounded. The numerical results are verified via time series, histograms, and the 0-1 test. Several examples are considered. This paper reveals some new and rich dynamics of a two-dimensional prey-predator system and to anticontrol the extinction of one of the species. For a particular value of the bifurcation parameter, one of the system variable dynamics is going to extinct, while another remains chaotic. To prevent the extinction, a simple anticontrol algorithm is applied so that the system orbits can escape from the vanishing trap. As the bifurcation parameter increases, the system presents quasiperiodic, stable, chaotic and also hyperchaotic orbits. Some of the chaotic attractors are Kaplan-Yorke type, in the sense that the sum of its Lyapunov exponents is positive. Also, atypically for undriven discrete systems, it is numerically found that, for some small parameter ranges, the system seemingly presents strange nonchaotic attractors. It is shown both analytically and by numerical simulations that the original system and the anticontrolled system undergo several Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. Beside the classical numerical tools for analyzing chaotic systems, such as phase portraits, time series and power spectral density, the’0-1’ test is used to differentiate regular attractors from chaotic attractors. The paper studies the problem of determining the optimal control when singular arcs are present in the solution. In the general classical approach the expressions obtained depend on the state and the costate variables at the same time, so requiring a forward-backward integration for the computation of the control. In this paper, sufficient conditions on the dynamics structure are provided and discussed in order to have both the control and the switching function depending on the state only, so simplifying the computation avoiding the necessity of the backward integration.
