This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Museum Guide Robot (MGR), an autonomous robotic system aimed at enhancing visitor experiences in museum environments. Driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, the MGR integrates sophisticated navigation and interaction technologies to facilitate personalized museum tours. Employing a combination of mechanical design features, including a lightweight chassis and Mecanum wheels for omnidirectional movement, the robot effectively navigates crowded spaces while maintaining stability and performance. Its electronic architecture incorporates motor drivers, cameras, LiDAR sensors to ensure precise navigation, obstacle avoidance, and screen with a real-time interface to interact with visitors. The system operates on the Robot Operating System (ROS), which supports modular development, enabling efficient integration of various functionalities, such as path planning and natural language processing. Simulation results demonstrate the MGR's high navigation accuracy and effective user interaction, while real-world testing highlights its potential to enrich the museum experience.

The development of a crowd digital twin offers significant potential for enhancing public safety, urban planning, and event management. A key challenge in creating such a digital twin lies in the efficient and accurate acquisition of crowd-related data, particularly through object detection models deployed on resource-constrained devices. Through a series of experiments, we compare TinyML and Edge approaches in terms of detection accuracy, inferencing time, and resource utilization. Our findings highlight the trade-offs inherent in selecting detection models for crowd digital twin applications, underscoring the importance of aligning model choice with specific deployment needs.

We discuss some restrictions on boundary conditions in continuum mechanics arising from the requirement that the basic balance laws, invariance conditions and entropy inequality must hold for the material outside of the bounding surface. We illustrate our assertions for polar materials, but the ideas we use are applicable to all continuum theories. © 1977 Birkhäuser Verlag.

This paper describes the programming mechanisms used in a program which controls transfer of data from an ultrasonic system through a minicomputer onto a single platter disc cartridge. The system enables the collection and digitization of B scans from parallel planes. The main software design constraints in such a system are identified and discussed in general terms. The rudiments of interrupt programming necessary for such an application are described in the context of the program, and simple optimization techniques for the bulk transfer of data onto a single platter cartridge are given. Although the particular computer used was a Data General Nova and the language used, the corresponding assembly code, the description of the techniques used are sufficiently general to allow the methodology to be imposed upon any assembly code.

This paper explores the functionality and application of vision and sensor-based sorting systems using robots and PLC for recovering recyclable material from waste. This was part of the advanced programmable logic controllers (PLC) course at Michigan Technological University, this class project is performed on an integrated PLC, vision, and a robotic system. In the waste management industry, there is an opportunity to recover large amounts of aluminum and other recyclables from landfill. A professional has two basic obligations-to do things right for their clients, and at the same time to do the right thing by society. For the software engineering professional, the quality agenda of sound methodological practice has come to the fore in recent years, but the concept of ethical behaviour, while present in the profession, has not appeared as often in software engineering curricula. In a first programming course, it is usual to select a programming language that encourages best practice and then to choose simple but elegant applications that enhance the beauty of the language and reinforce important programming and language constructs. This luxury is not available for the teaching of a second language, particularly when the application domain is the more mundane one of business systems. This paper reports on the teaching of business application development using COBOL to students who have previously been exposed to C++, and where the aim is to instill a respect for the legacy language and an empathy for business applications. The paper describes the success of a model where such teaching is woven into a real-world simulation of software engineering practice using team-based maintenance and development to create substantial systems. © 1996 IEEE.

There is a need for tool support for structured planning, execution and analysis of simulation-based training for crisis response and management. As a central component of an architecture for such tool support, we outline the design of an AI-based scenario event controller. The event controller is a component that uses machine reasoning to compute the next state in a scenario, given the actions performed in the corresponding simulation (execution of the scenario). Scenarios are specified in Answer Set Programming (ASP), which is a logic programming language we use for automated planning of training scenarios. A plan encoding in ASP adds expressivity in scenario specification and enables machine reasoning. For exercise managers this gives AI-based tool support for before-action and during-action reviews to optimize learning. In line with Modelling and Simulation as as Service, our approach externalizes event control from any particular simulation platform. The scenario, and its unfolding in terms of events, is externalized as a service. This increases interoperability and enables scenarios to be designed and modified readily and rapidly to adapt to new training requirements. © 2021 Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management, ISCRAM. Use cases are a powerful and widely recognised tool for functional requirements elicitation and specification of prospective software applications. However, there still are major problems and misunderstandings about the use case approach. One of these is the troublesome notion of use case interleaving which is discussed in this work. Interleaving is still present in the current UML specification. A. Simons correctly realised that interleaving compares with goto/comefrom semantics that were already judged harmful by Dijkstra at the emergence of the Structured Programming era. Simons, thus, has requested the explicit dropping of interleaving semantics. The authors give further support for Simonś request by showing that interleaving causes severe inconsistencies within UML and contradicts other proven and practically relevant use case concepts such as Goal-Based Use Cases of A. Cockburn, and contractual specifications of use cases expressed by pre- and postcondition approaches. Significant fixes to UML are proposed, in addition to those suggested by Simons. These will dramatically clarify prevailing problems and confusion with use cases and use case relationships among both practitioners and researchers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
