In this paper, we present a method for locating and tracking players in the game of squash using Gaussian mixture model background subtraction and agglomerative contour clustering from a calibrated single camera view. Furthermore, we describe a method for player re-identification after near total occlusion, based on stored color- and region-descriptors. For camera calibration, no additional pattern is needed, as the squash court itself can serve as a 3D calibration object. In order to exclude non-rally situations from motion analysis, we further classify each video frame into game phases using a multilayer perceptron. By considering a player’s position as well as the current game phase we are able to visualize player-individual motion patterns expressed as court coverage using pseudo colored heat-maps. In total, we analyzed two matches (six games, 1:28h) of high quality commercial videos used in sports broadcasting and compute high resolution (1cm per pixel) heat-maps. 130184 manually labeled frames (game phases and player identification) show an identification correctness of 79.28±8.99% (mean±std). Game phase classification is correct in 60.87±7.62% and the heat-map visualization correctness is 72.47±7.27%. © Christopher Brumann et al., published by Gruyter

On Evaluation of Graph Pattern Matching in Large Databases

Recently, graph databases have been received much attention in the research community due to their extensive applications in practice, such as social networks, biological networks and World Wide Web, which bring forth a lot of challenging data management problems including subgraph search, shortest-path queries, reachability verification, pattern matching, and so on. Among them, the graph pattern matching is to find all matches in a data graph G for a given pattern graph Q and is more general and flexible compared with other problems mentioned above. In this paper, we address a kind of graph matching, the so-called graph matching with d, by which an edge in Q is allowed to match a path of length ≤ δ in G. In order to reduce the search space when exploring G to find matches, we propose a new index structure and a novel pruning technique to eliminate a lot of unqualified vertices before join operations are carried out. Extensive experiments have been conducted, which show that our approach makes great improvements in running time compared to existing ones.

On the Designing of Popular Packages

By the package design problem we are given a set of queries (referred to as a query log) with each being a bit string indicating the favourite activities or items of customers and required to design a package of activities (or items) to satisfy as many customers as possible. It is a typical problem of data mining. In this paper, we address this problem and propose two algorithms to find most popular packages based on the signature techniques. One is for finding single packages while the second is devoted to the design of multiple packages, by which a binary tree for a query log is constructed in a way as a signature tree for a signature file. Extensive experiments have also been conducted, which show that our method for this problem is promising.

"Double-DIP": Unsupervised image decomposition via coupled deep-image-priors

Many seemingly unrelated computer vision tasks can be viewed as a special case of image decomposition into separate layers. For example, image segmentation (separation into foreground and background layers);transparent layer separation (into reflection and transmission layers);Image dehazing (separation into a clear image and a haze map), and more. In this paper we propose a unified framework for unsupervised layer decomposition of a single image, based on coupled "Deep-image-Prior" (DIP) networks. It was shown [38] that the structure of a single DIP generator network is sufficient to capture the low-level statistics of a single image. We show that coupling multiple such DIPs provides a powerful tool for decomposing images into their basic components, for a wide variety of applications. This capability stems from the fact that the internal statistics of a mixture of layers is more complex than the statistics of each of its individual components. We show the power of this approach for Image-Dehazing, Fg/Bg Segmentation, Watermark-Removal, Transparency Separation in images and video, and more. These capabilities are achieved in a totally unsupervised way, with no training examples other than the input image/video itself. 1 Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

An image is not just a collection of objects, but rather a graph where each object is related to other objects through spatial and semantic relations. Using relational reasoning modules, such as the non-local module [44], can therefore improve object detection. Current schemes apply such dedicated modules either to a specific layer of the bottom-up stream, or between already-detected objects. We show that the relational process can be better modeled in a coarse-to-fine manner and present a novel framework, applying a non-local module sequentially to increasing resolution feature maps along the top-down stream. In this way, information can naturally passed from larger objects to smaller related ones. Applying the module to fine feature maps further allows the information to pass between the small objects themselves, exploiting repetitions of instances of the same class. In practice, due to the expensive memory utilization of the non-local module, it is infeasible to apply the module as currently used to high-resolution feature maps. We redesigned the non local module, improved it in terms of memory and number of operations, allowing it to be placed anywhere along the network. We further incorporated relative spatial information into the module, in a manner that can be incorporated into our efficient implementation. We show the effectiveness of our scheme by improving the results of detecting small objects on COCO by 1-2 AP points over Faster and Mask RCNN and by 1 AP over using non-local module on the bottom-up stream. This paper proposes a novel system for information retrieval over a set of scanned documents in the Czech language. The documents are in the form of raster images and thus they are first converted into the text form by optical character recognition (OCR). Then OCR errors are corrected and the corrected texts are indexed and stored into a fulltext database. The database provides a possibility of searching over these documents. This paper describes all components of the above mentioned system with a particular focus on the proposed OCR correction method. We experimentally show that the proposed approach is efficient, because it corrects a significant number of errors. We also create a small Czech corpus to evaluate OCR error correction methods which represent another contribution of this paper. Schizophrenia (SZ) is a mental disorder whereby due to the secretion of specific chemicals in the brain, the function of some brain regions is out of balance, leading to the lack of coordination between thoughts, actions, and emotions. This study provides various intelligent deep learning (DL)-based methods for automated SZ diagnosis via electroencephalography (EEG) signals. The obtained results are compared with those of conventional intelligent methods. To implement the proposed methods, the dataset of the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw, Poland, has been used. First, EEG signals were divided into 25 s time frames and then were normalized by z-score or norm L2. In the classification step, two different approaches were considered for SZ diagnosis via EEG signals. In this step, the classification of EEG signals was first carried out by conventional machine learning methods, e.g., support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors, decision tree, naïve Bayes, random forest, extremely randomized trees, and bagging. Various proposed DL models, namely, long short-term memories (LSTMs), one-dimensional convolutional networks (1D-CNNs), and 1DCNN-LSTMs, were used in the following. In this step, the DL models were implemented and compared with different activation functions. Among the proposed DL models, the CNN-LSTM architecture has had the best performance. In this architecture, the ReLU activation function with the z-score and L2-combined normalization was used. It is a matter of fact that Europe is facing more and more crucial challenges regarding health and social care due to the demographic change and the current economic context. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has stressed this situation even further, thus highlighting the need for taking action. Active and Assisted Living (AAL) technologies come as a viable approach to help facing these challenges, thanks to the high potential they have in enabling remote care and support. Broadly speaking, AAL can be referred to as the use of innovative and advanced Information and Communication Technologies to create supportive, inclusive and empowering applications and environments that enable older, impaired or frail people to live independently and stay active longer in society. AAL capitalizes on the growing pervasiveness and effectiveness of sensing and computing facilities to supply the persons in need with smart assistance, by responding to their necessities of autonomy, independence, comfort, security and safety. The application scenarios addressed by AAL are complex, due to the inherent heterogeneity of the end-user population, their living arrangements, and their physical conditions or impairment. Despite aiming at diverse goals, AAL systems should share some common characteristics. They are designed to provide support in daily life in an invisible, unobtrusive and user-friendly manner. Moreover, they are conceived to be intelligent, to be able to learn and adapt to the requirements and requests of the assisted people, and to synchronise with their specific needs. Nevertheless, to ensure the uptake of AAL in society, potential users must be willing to use AAL applications and to integrate them in their daily environments and lives. In this respect, video- and audio-based AAL applications have several advantages, in terms of unobtrusiveness and information richness. The automotive industry is eventually evolving into a complex network of services. The heterogeneous and distributed nature of automotive software systems demands flexible software components which can operate in different environments. Because of heterogeneous automotive development environments, the domain experts, must cope with too many diversities, adaption layers, and incompatibilities to design applications for the current generation of autonomous driving vehicles. In this context, interface adaptation is a promising approach to achieve flexibility without directly changing the respective components. AUTOSAR, which is the de-facto standard for describing automotive system architecture and is a hugely comprehensive standard allowing designers full control from abstract system description to bare metal level deployment. However, the vehicle subsystems have still evolved to include multifarious high-level domains not covered by AUTOSAR e.g. Infotainment, Telematics etc. Therefore, it seems beneficial to bridge the semantic gaps between AUTOSAR applications and other standards of automotive application domains. The goal of this paper is to investigate interface semantic mapping and achieve transparent integration of domain-specific applications using the translation of semantics among the AUTOSAR platform software component models and other software components models of open source development platforms e.g. GENIVI. A key goal of such a modelling approach is the reuse of existing interface description languages and respective code generators. This will enhance future interoperability and decrease in incompatibility among these platforms.
