Collaborative filtering algorithms find useful patterns in rating and consumption data and exploit these patterns to guide users to good items. Many of the patterns in rating datasets reflect important real-world differences between the various users and items in the data;other patterns may be irrelevant or possibly undesirable for social or ethical reasons, particularly if they reflect undesired discrimination, such as gender or ethnic discrimination in publishing. In this work, we examine the response of collaborative filtering recommender algorithms to the distribution of their input data with respect to a dimension of social concern, namely content creator gender. Using publicly-available book ratings data, we measure the distribution of the genders of the authors of books in user rating profiles and recommendation lists produced from this data. We find that common collaborative filtering algorithms differ in the gender distribution of their recommendation lists, and in the relationship of that output distribution to user profile distribution. The last decade has seen the development of a wide set of tools, such as wavefront shaping, computational or fundamental methods, that allow to understand and control light propagation in a complex medium, such as biological tissues or multimode fibers. A vibrant and diverse community is now working on this field, that has revolutionized the prospect of diffraction-limited imaging at dept. in tissues. Several vision-based structural health monitoring (SHM) approaches have been developed since early 1980s. With the advancement and wide availability of digital video cameras, compounded with the development and enhancement of image analysis methods, vision sensor as a new approach of using a video camera has become a viable alternative and/or complementary method to remotely capture the motions of the structure. This paper presents the methods of applying computer vision algorithms and the development of the software tool for extracting the displacements, strains, velocities and accelerations of the desired points or areas (templates) from video images, demonstrates the applications of the approach for monitoring a highway bridge, explains the challenges in developing robust and accurate vision sensor as an effective solution for SHM practice. © APWSHM 2018. The 2020 European Bioinformatics Community for Mass Spectrometry (EuBIC-MS) Developers’ meeting was held from January 13 th to January 17 th 2020 in Nyborg, Denmark. Among the participants were scientists as well as developers working in the field of computational mass spectrometry (MS) and proteomics. The 4-day program was split between introductory keynote lectures and parallel hackathon sessions. During the latter, the participants developed bioinformatics tools and resources addressing outstanding needs in the community. The hackathons allowed less experienced participants to learn from more advanced computational MS experts, and to actively contribute to highly relevant research projects. We successfully produced several new tools that will be useful to the proteomics community by improving data analysis as well as facilitating future research. This paper presents a novel approach for increasing the representativeness in participatory design in the context of an aging society. In the research project QuartiersNETZ we are facing the challenge of including a large and heterogeneous target group into a participatory design process to create software solutions, which foster an independent and self-determined life for a broad range of elderly. Regular formats like neighborhood meetings, which are used as spaces for participatory design, are only attended by a certain type of elderly people. Hence, we present our ongoing work of creating empirical life situation types and selecting corresponding representatives. Our approach combines methods from social science, requirements and usability engineering to especially include groups who are rather difficult to integrate into open participation formats increasing representativeness in the participatory design process. The way that design is being taught is continuously changing under the pressure of the transition from analogical to digital environments. This becomes even more important as the novelty and the alleged superiority of the digital world is used as a marketing tool by competing universities. Even though in some fields of application this approach is desirable, some particular aspects of teaching design and architecture make this transition debatable. The advantages of drawing on blackboards over drawing on whiteboard surfaces in regards of line aesthetic and expression possibilities were previously identified, along with the complementary necessary features for improvement. This study showcases a proof of concept in digitally augmenting a blackboard surface. The system allows the capturing, processing and making real time projections of images over the blackboard surface as trace references. Such a hybrid system, along with providing support for design and architecture related presentations and discussions could also mediate the contradictory relation towards technology that students and teachers have. There has been a shift to technology-enhanced learning. New technology enables English teachers to expand learning with more ample resources and dynamic activities. Technology-enhanced learning has diversified learning activities in classroom or outside of classroom (van der Zwaard & Bannink, 2016). Scholars found drama to be an effective pedagogical tool to enhance children's language learning, communication, and personal development (Brouillette, 2010). The integration of drama and digital technology provides situational and experiential learning which can improve students' learning attainment. The researchers conducted a digital theater project and attempted to examine the effect of this integration approach on English acquisition and learning attitudes. The pre- and post-language tests and survey were devised for this investigation. A repeated measure was performed to see the effect and retention of the language. The results showed that the digital drama theater project had a significant impact on English learning. Children were able to retain the majority of the previously learned language. Their motivation, confidence, and attitudes toward the digital technology were also significantly increased.

Now a days, Cloud computing has become an enormous and popular technology among many users and enterprises in various industries due to the high class service it is able to provide to its customers. But still there exists a set of concerns that bring down the reliability of cloud-based services restricting its popularity to a great extent. The industries as well as individuals are forced to keep their confidential documents and data away from the cloud because managing user identities in the clouds still continue as a paramount issue in this area. Scientists are meticulously working on the issue of security and privacy which are leading causes of impeding its development and are main hindrance to ensuring the reliability in cloud-based environments. Exhaustive research is going on in this area as part of which we propose a new method to improve the data security and authentication of a user in a cloud. This is a SaaS application that will completely empower a user to manage his content in the cloud based on two levels of authentication and with the help of two types of encryption. This method proves to be a good approach that will amplify the pace of security and reliability in the cloud computing environments without vitiating its current efficiency and scalability.

Traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers have become an important social issue in Japan. The primary factor of traffic accidents by elderly drivers is a reduction in their driving skill. In this case, in order to assist operation of driver whose driving skill is reduced, the system must be able to evaluate his driving behavior skill. In this paper, we propose a evaluation method of driver's driving skill. Here, coincident timing skill is focused on. A driver decides an execution timing of his operation based on prediction of time series change of situation around him. When execution timing of operation of the driver has the widely variability in spite of the same driving scene, it is considered that he have a reduced ability to drive vehicle. This magnitude of variability of execution timing of operation of driver is defined as coincident timing skill of the driver. In this paper, in order to evaluate this coincident timing skill, a driving behavior modeling technique is applied. Driving behavior model is used to predict driver's operation. And we have proposed a driving behavior modeling method to predict driver's operation. In our method, the execution timing of driver's operation is modeled by probability model. Therefore, our model has the potential to evaluate the driver's coincident timing skill by analyzing this probability model. According to the above viewpoint, we propose a evaluation method of coincident timing skill based on our driving behavior model. In the experiment, the driving behavior models of brake operation with difference execution timing are generated. Then, the results that the difference of each coincident timing skills is evaluated quantitatively based on the proposed method are shown.

Selfish behavior in the Tezos proof-of-stake protocol

Proof-of-Stake consensus protocols give rise to complex modeling challenges. We analyze the recently-updated Tezos Proof-of-Stake protocol and demonstrate that, under certain conditions, rational participants are incentivized to behave dishonestly. In doing so, we provide a theoretical analysis of the feasibility and profitability of a block stealing attack that we call selfish endorsing, a concrete instance of an attack previously only theoretically considered. We propose and analyze a simple change to the Tezos protocol which significantly reduces the (already small) profitability of this dishonest behavior, and introduce a new delay and reward scheme that is provably secure against length-1 and length-2 selfish endorsing attacks. Our framework provides a template for analyzing other Proof-of-Stake implementations for selfish behavior. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
