This paper aims to develop a Matlab application for computer-assisted learning in the evaluation of liver tumors using ultrasound. Diagnosing liver tumors detected during standard ultrasound exams is challenging for doctors, often requiring detailed investigations for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. computerized analysis of ultrasound images can significantly aid doctors in interpreting these images and formulating accurate diagnoses. The Matlab programming environment provides various tools for processing biomedical images. In this study, Histogram and Entropy functions were utilized to accurately differentiate between malignant and benign liver tumors. Additionally, Matlab App Designer was used to create a user-friendly interface for doctors. This application is also beneficial for students, offering a valuable tool for self-testing and skill development in clinical ultrasound courses and practical sessions. The proposed Matlab application employs classic image processing tools and serves as useful software for students learning liver ultrasound techniques.

This work presents an object-based people motion linkage system, which tracks and records the behavior of each person across multiple cameras. The proposed system includes two phases: path construction phase and path revision phase. The spatiotemporal relationships among cameras are trained by batch-learning procedures, and the appearance model is improved by color calibration for different cameras. When a person moves across cameras, the spatiotemporal relationship and appearance model are used to obtain the correspondence. However, object tracking may be lost due to some unexpected events. We revise the tracking paths by using the backward tracking technique to connect the missed links. Moreover, the trained Hidden Markov Models are further used to reconstruct the normal paths of these objects. In the experimental results, we demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by showing the reconnection of missing paths under different conditions. © 2020 Taiwan Academic Network Management Committee. The hierarchical and recursive expressive capability of rooted trees is applicable to represent statistical models in various areas, such as data compression, image processing, and machine learning. On the other hand, such hierarchical expressive capability causes a problem in tree selection to avoid overfitting. One unified approach to solve this is a Bayesian approach, on which the rooted tree is regarded as a random variable and a direct loss function can be assumed on the selected model or the predicted value for a new data point. However, all the previous studies on this approach are based on the probability distribution on full trees, to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, we propose a generalized probability distribution for any rooted trees in which only the maximum number of child nodes and the maximum dept. are fixed. Furthermore, we derive recursive methods to evaluate the characteristics of the probability distribution without any approximations. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The advancement of virtual reality (VR) technology can enrich pedagogical approaches and information communication. In the oncology radiotherapy treatment, the medical practitioners revealed two main issues: the lack of training infrastructure and patient comprehension of the treatment process. Virtual simulation can assist in solving these complexities by offering an economical virtual embodiment of the medical facility. This study aims to improve the user interface and experience of VR training applications from previous work by conducting a domain expert intervention methodology. This paper discusses the main challenges and features of user interaction design for effective VR training systems and optimises the system based on feedback from domain experts. The authors anticipate that the key factors and design considerations proposed for this VR training application can benefit the development of related training systems in many other domains. © 2023 IEEE.

While numerous methods have been proposed for computing distances between probability distributions in Euclidean space, relatively little attention has been given to computing such distances for distributions on graphs. However, there has been a marked increase in data that either lies on graph (such as protein interaction networks) or can be modeled as a graph (single cell data), particularly in the biomedical sciences. Thus, it becomes important to find ways to compare signals defined on such graphs. Here, we propose Graph Fourier MMD (GFMMD), a novel distance between distributions and signals on graphs. GFMMD is defined via an optimal witness function that is both smooth on the graph and maximizes difference in expectation between the pair of distributions on the graph. We find an analytical solution to this optimization problem as well as an embedding of distributions that results from this method. We also prove several properties of this method including scale invariance and applicability to disconnected graphs. We showcase it on graph benchmark datasets as well on single cell RNA-sequencing data analysis. In the latter, we use the GFMMD-based gene embeddings to find meaningful gene clusters. We also propose a novel type of score for gene selection called gene localization score which helps select genes for cellular state space characterization. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Compared to well-established underwater acoustic communication techniques, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) offers significantly more transmission bandwidth and can be used in multiple short-range marine applications. Color-shift keying (CSK) is a modulation techniques advocated for deploying high data rate transmission in red, green and blue (RGB) based laser technology. It utilizes light sources that produce Lambertian light patterns. Consequently, the broadcast message arrives at the receiver via line-of-sight (LoS) pathways, with the Rician distribution being used to model the appropriate channel. This paper analyzes UWOC visible light communication (VLC) links using light emitting diodes (LDs) as transmitter with small angular divergence. The channel direct current (DC) gains is considered in the analysis to show the channel gain, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), channel capacitance, and outage probability. This study also looks at the outage probability or the locally observed SNR of the CSK link below the threshold set for a particular quality of services. The results are depicted for a random white light in an UWOC system clean ocean. They shows that the SNR of the RGB Based Laser UWOC is proportional to P_t/N_0. The results also shows that the channel capacity increases with P_t/N_0 depending on the attenuation intensity ß. Finally, as the data rate increases with a fixed P_t/N_0, the outage probability increases. The data rate increases with P_t/N_0 and the transmission power with a fixed value outage probability. © 2022 IEEE.

Satellite-derived Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are of utmost significance in a wide range of applications, such as analysing terrain, urban planning, navigation and transportation, managing disasters, hydrological modelling, and monitoring natural resources. These applications collectively contribute to enhancing our comprehension, management, and planning of Earth's surface and its valuable resources. This research paper delves into exploring diverse methods and satellites employed for automatically generating DEMs from satellite stereo triplet images. The study primarily emphasises the importance of comprehending satellite image geometry, integrating suitable matching techniques, and developing open-source workflows to enhance the precision of automatically generated DEMs. Moreover, it aims to furnish valuable insights for future studies in this domain.

Down-conversion phosphors based on ions of lanthanides can be used to convert UV/blue components of solar spectrum in near-infrared radiation more suitable for conventional silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells. Comparing to other downconvertors, their advantages are long Stokes shift (> 300 nm) excluding re-absorption, and environment safety. However, down-conversion efficiency remains an issue. The paper reports on synthesis and characterization of down-conversion phosphor based on lanthanide-doped fluoride NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+. The phosphor was synthesized using inexpensive wet method and further baked at -500oC for 1 h to convert NaYF4 matrix from cubic to hexagonal phase. The obtained micropowder was ball-milled to nano-powder. The phosphor demonstrated down-conversion radiation from 830 to 1100 nm attributed to Yb3+. The Stokes shift was - 600 nm. The intensity of NIR peak radiation increased three times with increasing concentration of Yb3+ from 3 to 14%. A thin-sheet down-convertor of a Luminescent Solar Concentrator (LSC) was made in the form of a projector Mylar transparency coated with nanocolloid of the phosphor in a solution of polymer PMMA in chlorobenzene. Such thin sheet improved by 15% the PV power produced by the LSC being illuminated with a solar simulator as compared to an incandescent light bulb. The obtained results can be used in building more efficient PV green power. © 2021 SPIE. All rights reserved.

It has been a strong interest in the laser systems with segmented gain/loss with PT-symmetry properties. This paper shows that a fiber laser pumped from one end with a depleting pump meets the conditions of PT-symmetry in the vicinity of the turning point where the gain becomes equal to the loss. The real component of the square of the complex refractive index is symmetric with respect to the turning point while the imaginary part is anti-symmetric. When the gain grows, the laser becomes segmented into two regions with dominating gain or loss. The turning point starts moving towards the other end of the laser. It leads to the appearance, in addition to the laser mode evenly distributed over the entire laser cavity, of a mode that is pushed in the lossy region. The frequency of that mode is in resonance with the length of the lossy region. The experimental data for a 15-m long Erbium doped fiber laser correlated with such hypothesis. We also built a nanocolloid capillary optical amplifier using synthesized phosphor NaY0.83 F4: Yb3+ 0.14, Er3+ 0.03. The effect of upconversion emission in such amplifier leads to an additional channel for the pump depletion. This potentially can cause even stronger PT-symmetry effects in a laser based on such optical amplifier. © 2021 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Image recognition based automatic meter reading (AMR) method is getting popular nowadays. As traditional mechanical water meters are usually placed in poor environments, if we install the AMR on the water meter, the power supply of the AMR is an issue that needs to be considered thoughtfully. This study proposes to place a hydroelectric generator in the water pipe to provide auxiliary power in order to improve the power supply of AMR system. The system can also automatically identify the value of the water meter through the cloud service, so as to reduce the personnel cost of the water company, and further manage and control the hydraulic resources more conveniently.
