Humanoid animation is a complex task which usually requires particular skills and training. To simplify this process we propose a visual tool, called H-Animator, which aims to help animators (especially the novice ones) in modeling X3D animations for H-Anim humanoids. Besides easiness of use, achieved through intuitive metaphors and interaction styles, we aim at providing an architecture to facilitate the reuse and sharing of X3D content, allowing animators to build a wide archive of material to be reused. Interoperability in the industrial environment is of significant importance, since it is related to the successful interoperation of systems and applications of great heterogeneity and complexity. Their seamless integration would lead to a manufacturing enterprise model with a higher degree of flexibility and independence from the industrial enterprise systems and applications. This paper addresses enterprise interoperability proposing an extension of the IEC 62264 standard down to the Shop Floor layer through appropriate dominant lower layer standards. © 2006 IEEE.

Long-duration surface missions to the Moon and Mars will require bases to accommodate habitats for the astronauts, as well as indoor lab.ratory facilities, in-situ resource plants, power plants, and scientific/surface mobility equipment. Transporting the materials and equipment required to build the necessary habitats would be costly and difficult. However, the use of planetary resources to produce construction materials, or even as naturally found (such as lunar regolith utilized as an outer layer for radiation shielding, or regolith in bags as wall structure), could drastically reduce the upmass for habitats. The materials chosen for the habitat walls play a direct role in protection against each of the mentioned hazards. Choosing the best materials, their configuration, and the amount required is extremely difficult due to the immense size of the design region. For example a 3-layer habitat wall created from 20 possible materials all with varying thicknesses would have #number of layers(possible material types)∧(possible thicknesses) = 320∧inf possible solutions. Clearly, an optimization method is warranted for habitat wall design. Standard optimization techniques are not suitable for problems with such large search spaces. To overcome the large search regions, a habitat wall design tool using genetic algorithms has been developed. GAs use a "survival of the fittest" philosophy, where the most fit individuals are more likely to survive and reproduce, therefore transmitting their genes to the next generation. This paper focuses on finding optimal GA parameters for the habitat optimization tool. This tool is a multiobjective formulation of structural analysis, heat loss, radiation, and meteoroid protection. Some of the constraint calculations (i.e. safety factor, deflection, and heat loss) require long computation times. In many practical situations, we need to combine probabilistic and interval uncertainty. For example, we need to compute statistics like population mean E = 1/n·∑i=1nxi or population variance V = 1/n·∑i=1n(xi - E)2 in the situations when we only know intervals xi of possible values of xi. In this case, it is desirable to compute the range of the corresponding characteristic. Some range computation problems are NP-hard;for these problems, in general, only an enclosure is possible. For other problems, there are efficient algorithms. In many practical situations, we have additional information that can be used as constraints on possible cumulative distribution functions (cdfs). For example, we may know that the actual (unknown) cdf is Gaussian. In this paper, we show that such constraints enable us to drastically narrow down the resulting ranges - and sometimes, transform the originally intractable (NP-hard) computational problem of computing the exact range into an efficiently solvable one. This possibility is illustrated on the simplest example of an NP-problem from interval statistics: the problem of computing the range V of the variance V . We also describe how we can estimate the amount of information under such combined intervals-and-constraints uncertainty.

The GENERTIA red team uses a genetic algorithm to perform vulnerability analysis in an effort to discover holes in an intrusion detection system. This paper demonstrates how a GENERTIA blue team generates detectors to patch those holes discovered by the GRT, The GBT uses a novel approach to generate detectors that have different coverage in order to reduce the amount of overlap of detectors created by random generation and negative selection. Supporting users' navigation is a fundamental feature of mobile guides. This paper presents an experimental evaluation comparing three different ways of providing navigation guidance by combining visual and audio directions during guided city tours. The three considered solutions differ in the way audio directions are augmented with visual directions: a traditional map-based solution, a combination of a map and photographs of the area, a combination of large arrows and photographs. The results of our evaluation show that when the map is combined with photographs that clearly indicate the direction to the user or when the map is replaced by a combination of directional arrows and photographs, users' performance is significantly better. Moreover, the combination of map and photographs was highly preferred by users. Copyright 2005 ACM.

In this paper, we present LAMP3D, a system for the location-aware presentation of VRML content on mobile devices. We explore the application of LAMP3D in tourist mobile guides: the system is used to provide tourists with a 3D visualization of the environment they are exploring, synchronized with the physical world through the use of GPS data;tourists can easily obtain information on the objects they see in the real world by directly selecting them in the VRML world. We discuss the design and development of the system and report about the feedback obtained from the informal user testing we carried out. Searching for an item in a long ordered list is a frequent task when using any kind of computing device (from desktop PCs to mobile phones). This paper explores three different interfaces to support this task on the limited screen of mobile devices (e.g., PDAs, in-car systems, mobile phones). Two of the considered interfaces are based on the idea of tree-augmentation of a list proposed in Furnas' Effective View Navigation theory [6] and differ in their dept. versus breadth ratio. The third interface adopts the traditional technique of list scrolling based on keyboard entry. We compare them in terms of search time, number of errors, and user's satisfaction. Results show that list scrolling based on keyboard entry outperforms both tree-augmented lists and that the broader tree-augmented list is better than the deeper one. © IFEP International Federation for Information Processing 2005.

Virtual humans are being increasingly used in different domains. Virtual human modeling requires to consider aspects belonging to different levels of abstractions. For example, at lower levels, one has to consider aspects concerning the geometric definition of the virtual human model and appearance while, at higher levels, one should be able to define how the virtual human behaves into an environment. H-Anim, the standard for representing humanoids in X3D/VRML worlds, is mainly concerned with low-level modeling aspects. As a result, the developer has to face the problem of defining the virtual human behavior and translating it into lower levels (e.g. geometrical and kinematic aspects). In this paper, we propose VHA (Virtual Human Architecture), a software architecture that allows one to easily manage an interactive H-Anim virtual human into X3D/VRML worlds. The proposed solution allows the developer to focus mainly on high-level aspects of the modeling process, such as the definition of the virtual human behavior.
