This paper presents the current status of VU-Flow (Visualization of Users' Flow), a software tool that is able to automatically record usage data in Virtual Environments and provide a set of 2D and 3D visualizations that make it easy for an evaluator to visually detect peculiar users' behaviors and navigability problems. The paper focuses on novel functionalities we recently added to the tool. More specifically, the new version of VU-Flow includes: (i) the possibility of visualizing predominant flow directions for multiple users or multiple visiting sessions, (ii) a visualization aimed at highlighting traffic congestion problems in multi-user VEs, (iii) the possibility of visualizing a replay of users' visits together with audio and video recordings of actual users (e.g. gathered during lab.experiments), and (iv) the ability to derive, for each user, a list of quantitative data characterizing her behavior in the VE. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2005.

This paper discusses the design and development of a preference-based search tool (PBST) for tourists, operating on PDA devices. PBSTs are decision support systems that help users in finding the outcomes (e.g., multi-attribute products or services) that best satisfy their needs and preferences. Our tool is specifically aimed at filtering the amount of information about points of interest (POIs) in a geographic area, thus supporting users in the search of the most suitable solution to their needs (e.g., a hotel, a restaurant, a combination of POIs satisfying a set of constraints specified by the user). We focus on the design of an effective interface for the tool, by exploring the combination of dynamic queries to filter POIs on a map with a visualization of the degree of satisfaction of constraints set by the user. We also report the results of a usability test we carried out on the first prototype of the system. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2005.

Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is an effective technique for controlling microprocessor energy and performance. Existing DVFS techniques are primarily based on hardware, OS timeinterrupts, or static-compiler techniques. However, substantially greater gains can be realized when control opportunities are also explored in a dynamic compilation environment. There are several advantages to deploying DVFS and managing energy/performance tradeoffs through the use of a dynamic compiler. Most importantly, dynamic compiler driven DVFS is fine-grained, code-aware, and adaptive to the current microarchitecture environment. This paper presents a design framework of the run-time DVFS optimizer in a general dynamic compilation system. A prototype of the DVFS optimizer is implemented and integrated into an industrialstrength dynamic compilation system. The obtained optimization system is deployed in a real hardware platform that directly measures CPU voltage and current for accurate power and energy readings. Experimental results, based on physical measurements for over 40 SPEC or Olden benchmarks, show that significant energy savings are achieved with little performance degradation. SPEC2K FP benchmarks benefit with energy savings of up to 70% (with 0.5% performance loss). In addition, SPEC2K INT show up to 44% energy savings (with 5% performance loss), SPEC95 FP save up to 64% (with 4.9% performance loss), and Olden save up to 61% (with 4.5% performance loss). On average, the technique leads to an energy delay product (EDP) improvement that is 3X-5X better than static voltage scaling, and is more than 2X (22% vs. 9%) better than the reported DVFS results of prior static compiler work. While the proposed technique is an effective method for microprocessor voltage and frequency control, the design framework and methodology described in this paper have broader potential to address other energy and power issues such as di/dt and thermal control. © 2005 IEEE.

Although some guidelines (e.g., based on architectural principles) have been proposed for designing Virtual Environments (VEs), several usability problems can be identified only by studying the behavior of real users in VEs. This paper proposes a tool, called VU-Flow, that is able to automatically record usage data of VEs and then visualize it in formats that make it easy for the VE designer to visually detect peculiar users' behaviors and thus better understand the effects of her design choices. In particular, the visualizations concern: i) the detailed paths followed by single users or groups of users in the VE, ii) areas of maximum (or minimum) users' flow, iii) the parts of the environment more seen (or less seen) by users, iv) detailed replay of users visits. We show examples of how these visualizations allow one to visually detect useful information such as the interests of users, navigation problems, users' visiting style. Although this paper describes how VU-Flow can be used in the context of VEs, it is interesting to note that the tool can be also applied to the study of users of location-aware mobile devices in physical environments. © 2004 ACM.

The navigation support provided by user interfaces of Virtual Environments (VEs) is often inadequate and tends to be overly complex, especially in the case of large-scale VEs. In this paper, we propose a novel navigation aid that aims at allowing users to easily locate objects and places inside large-scale VEs. The aid exploits 3D arrows to point towards the objects and places the user is interested in. We illustrate and discuss the experimental evaluation we carried out to assess the usefulness of the proposed solution, contrasting it with more traditional 2D navigation aids. In particular, we compared subjects' performance in 4 conditions which differ for the type of provided navigation aid: three conditions employed respectively the proposed "3D arrows" aid, an aid based on 2D arrows, and a 2D aid based on a radar metaphor;the fourth condition was a control condition with no navigation aids availab.e. © 2004 ACM.

A hybrid divide and conquer algorithm is one that switches from a divide and conquer to an iterative strategy at a specified problem size. Such algorithms can provide significant performance improvements relative to alternatives that use a single strategy. However, the identification of the optimal problem size at which to switch for a particular algorithm and platform can be challenging. We describe an automated approach to this problem that first conducts experiments to explore the performance space on a particular platform and then uses the resulting performance data to construct an optimal hybrid algorithm on that platform. We implement this technique in a tool, Ouroboros, that automatically constructs a high-performance hybrid algorithm from a set of registered algorithms. We present results obtained with this tool for several classical divide and conquer algorithms, including matrix multiply and sorting, and report speedups of up to six times achieved over non-hybrid algorithms.

We define the Morse-Smale complex of a Morse function over a 3-manifold as the overlay of the descending and ascending manifolds of all critical points. In the generic case, its 3-dimensional cells are shaped like crystals and are separated by quadrangular faces. In this paper, we give a combinatorial algorithm for constructing such complexes for piecewise linear data.

Virtual Reality (VR) interfaces to e-commerce sites have recently begun to appear on the Internet, promising to make the e shopping experience more natural, attractive, and fun for customers. Unfortunately, switching to a desktop VR design for an e-commerce site is not trivial and does not guarantee at all that the interface will be effective. In this paper, we first briefly discuss the potential advantages of these interfaces, stressing the need for a better approach to their design. Then, we present the directions we are following to build more usable and effective VR stores, i.e.: (i) reformulating design guidelines from real-world stores in the VR context, (ii) exploiting VR to create user empowerments that meet both customer and merchant needs, and (iii) personalizing the VR store to better reflect customer's taste, preferences, and interests. For each of the three directions, we illustrate and discuss a detailed case study. © 2009 ACM.
