In this study, the vibration transmissibility of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) with a linear damper having a configuration perpendicular to a linear vertical spring is analyzed using a nonlinear frequency analysis method. The concept of the output frequency response function (OFRF) is employed to derive an explicit polynomial relationship between the system output response (relative displacement of the mass) and the parameter of interest which is the nonlinear damping coefficient. With the derived OFRF polynomial, various damping parameters were designed for desired output responses. © 2017 IEEE.

In many of the marine applications, the availability of an accurate system to localize underwater targets using a group of surface vehicles equipped with acoustic sensors is of paramount importance. In this context, the surface vehicles must keep a well-defined formation with respect to the targets so as to maximize the range-based information available for target localization. In this paper, a target position estimation algorithm together with a simple formation control law to maintain an optimal configuration that maximizes range-related information for target localization and tracking are presented. The setup studied consists of a group of surface vehicles moving in formation and a target performing a predefined mission. The optimal formation is computed by maximizing the determinant of an appropriately defined Fisher information matrix (FIM), subject to inter-vehicle collision avoidance and vehicle manoeuvring constraints. A centralized approach for the formation control is considered, where the trajectory planning is carried out by a supervisor that computes the control actions for each agent. The formation control is complemented with a collision avoidance logic based on a discrete event law. Simulations show that this strategy leads to an interesting and well defined behavior of the formation for localization and tracking.

Nowadays Electroencephalogram (EEG) devices allow the recording of signals that can be used to extract information necessary to identify different types of cognitive processes. In EEG classification, Feature Selection (FS) represents a pivotal phase, as these problems request the processing of a large amount of high-dimensional patterns. In this paper, FS has been solved by an embedded multi-objective genetic optimization procedure which evolves a population of potential solutions (subsets of features), subject to the simultaneous minimization of the misclassification ratio and number of selected attributes. Random Forests (RF) classifiers are adopted, due to their fast training and their compatibility with spread classes of very diverse patterns. The main contribution presented in this paper consists in introducing an inertial behavior to feature extraction. The available feature set is extended with features from previous time frames, and FS is performed on this extended set. In this context, the experimental analysis illustrates the impact of the temporal extension on FS. Additionally, two enhancements are proposed for the multi-objective optimization, to support an effective Pareto-ranking of the solutions in the expanded exploration search space. Thus, the number of trees in the embedded RF classifier is gradually increased, for reducing the computational load requested for the evaluation of the misclassification ratio, without impeding the exploration. Also, the preference for the minimization of misclassifications is set by introducing a dynamic objective function for describing the parsimony of the selected subset of attributes. The proposed FS is experimentally demonstrated on EEG data collected during mathematical tasks of gradual complexities.

Laboratory experimentation plays an essential role in control education. To reduce the high costs of maintaining apparatus in traditional labs and to support distance and blended learning, online laboratories are used as a possible alternative to conventional hands-on labs. In these labs it is often desirable to allow students to define their own experiments. This paper presents the definition and implementation of a generic experimentation language for conducting automatic experiments on existing online laboratories. The main objective is to use an online lab, created independently, as a component in which users can perform experiments. To achieve it, authors present the Experiment Application. It is composed by Blockly, to define and design the experiments, and Google Chart, review and visualize the experiment results. This tool offers benefits to students, teachers and, even, lab designers. For the moment, it can be used with any existing lab or simulation created with the authoring tool Easy Java(script) Simulations. Since there are repositories with hundreds of free available labs created with this tool, the potential applicability of the described tool is considerable. To illustrate the utility of the Experiment Application a very well-known system is used: the Simple Harmonic Oscillator system. © 2017

This paper addresses the problem of basic control loops in wastewater treatment plants. By basic control loops we are referring to the traditional dissolved oxygen and nitrates. In a usual activated sludge process based wastewater treatment plant, these controls are located, respectively, at the aerated and anoxic sections. They are the basic controls more sophisticated control solutions can be based upon. Therefore it is important that these loops perform in an efficient way. The problem is addressed here within the framework provided by the Benchmark Simulation Model Number 1 (BSMI) and by the use of an event-based solution. As far as to the knowledge of the authors, no solution based on this kind of controllers has been proposed already in the literature. The controllers are taken as of similar complexity as the ones provided as default control strategy in the BSMI, therefor being the main difference, the possibilities provided by the event-based implementation. It will be verified that the solution can slightly improve the performance of the already exiting controllers both at loop level as well as at plant operation level.

This paper presents an attempt to improve dynamic identification procedure for robotic manipulators, such that obtained models are appropriate for trajectory planning and motion control. In addition to algorithms development, authors bring new insights and arguments for the experiments organisation and analysis of the collected data. Significant part of the work is devoted to a case study in calibrating of a collaborative robot (co-bot) KUKA LWR4+, which represents a powerful tool for modern manufacturing systems. Therefore, refined models compared to the ones relied on CAD data provided by the manufacturer can be beneficial for various applications. © 2017

The water companies should provide services at the affordable tariffs for all people, irrespective of the water source, geographical area, size or complexity of water supply system. In order to contribute to the sustainability of water distribution infrastructure, tariffs should cover, in practice, at least the operating and maintenance costs. To obtain a lower water tariff, the water-energy nexus should be take into account. Thus, developing the innovative technological solutions which to allow new water pricing options and policy actions based on energy efficiency measures and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to implement the EU water policy represent a new research direction. The paper proposes an innovative solution represented by a software platform for a sustainable management of water supply systems which to include the advanced ICT solutions (Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence) and smart concepts (smart metering, demand response) with benefits both energy and water fields. The platform could lead to realize significant energy and savings through technical measures and a smart management, supplying the consumers with quality water at an affordable tariff considering the socio-economic factors.

Industrial image datasets for quality inspection are mostly sparse in defects. It is then hard for both automated optical inspection (AOI) machines and simple neural network classifiers to inspect all defects effectively. In this work, we develop a novel framework for industrial anomaly detection in one-class classification manner, which utilized pre-trained generative adversarial networks (GANs) as the rule of thumb to perform anomaly detection. Our results show that GANs are able to capture arbitrary and structural industrial images and can effectively discern defects when the query images are defective.

In this paper a current-limiting droop control of grid-tied inverters that introduces virtual inertia and operates without a phase locked loop unit is proposed. The proposed controller inherits a self-synchronization function and can guarantee tight bounds for the inverter frequency. In addition, using nonlinear Lyapunov theory, it is analytically proven that the inverter current never violates a given maximum value. Compared to the original current-limiting droop controller, the maximum capacity of the inverter is utilized at all times using the proposed strategy, even under grid faults. It is also proven that the proposed controller significantly reduces the resonance problem of the LCL filter. Extended simulation results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed controller under normal and faulty grid conditions.
