This work faces the problem of frequency deviation in microgrid systems. The considered microgrid includes renewable energy sources such as wind and solar photovoltaic. As long as these sources provide an irregular power supply or there is a sudden change in the system load, the power system frequency deviates. In order to compensate such deviations, alternative, conventional energy sources should be commanded in order to provide the corresponding power deficit. In this paper a very simple and of common industrial practice control approach such as the Internal Model control based on first order plus time delay models is proposed to tune a PI controller. As the commanded energy sources are based on fuel consumption, the control usage has to be maintained at low levels. It is shown that the PI control approach is able to provide accurate frequency deviation control with very low movements for the control signal. Time domain simulations show the effectiveness of the approach as compared with other more sophisticated controllers (Fractional order PID) already proposed in the literature. © 2017 IEEE.

In this paper, the recently proposed current-limiting droop (CLD) controller for grid-connected inverters is enhanced in order to comply with the Fault-Ride-Through (FRT) requirements set by the Grid Code under grid voltage sags. The proposed version of the CLD extends the operation of the original CLD by fully utilizing the power capacity of the inverter under grid faults. It is analytically proven that during a grid fault, the inverter current increases but never violates a given maximum value. Based on this property, an FRT algorithm is proposed and embedded into the proposed control design to support the voltage of the grid. In contrast to the existing FRT algorithms that change the desired values of both the real and reactive power, the proposed method maximizes only the reactive power to support the grid voltage and the real power automatically drops due to the inherent current-limiting property. Extensive simulations are presented to compare the proposed control approach with the original CLD under a faulty grid.

An autonomous system is presented to solve the problem of in space assembly, which can be used to further the NASA goal of deep space exploration. Of particular interest is the assembly of large truss structures, which requires precise and dexterous movement in a changing environment. A prototype of an autonomous manipulator called "Assemblers"was fabricated from an aggregation of Stewart Platform robots for the purpose of researching autonomous in space assembly capabilities. The forward kinematics for an Assembler is described by the set of translations and rotation angles for each component Stewart Platform, from which the position and orientation of the end effector are simple to calculate. However, selecting inverse kinematic poses, defined by the translations and rotation angles, for the Assembler requires coordination between each Stewart Platform and is an underconstrained non-linear optimization problem. For assembly tasks, it is ideal that the pose selected has the least sensitivity to disturbances possible. A method of sensitivity reduction is proposed by minimizing the Frobenius Norm (FN) of the Jacobian for the forward kinematics. The effectiveness of the FN method will be demonstrated through a Monte Carlo simulation method to model random motion internal to the structure. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Cooperative automatic driving, or platooning, is a promising solution to improve traffic safety, while reducing congestion and pollution. The design of a control system for this application is a challenging, multi-disciplinary problem, as cooperation between vehicles is obtained through wireless communication. So far, control and network issues of platooning have been investigated separately. In this work we design a cooperative driving system from a joint network and control perspective, determining worst-case upper bounds on the safety distance subject to network losses, so the actual inter-vehicle gap can be tuned depending on vehicle or network performance. By means of simulation, we show that the system is very robust to packet losses and that the derived bounds are never violated. © 2017 IEEE.

While the opening of data has become a common practice for both governments and companies, many datasets are still not published since they might violate privacy regulations. The risk on privacy violations is a factor that often blocks the publication of data and results in a reserved attitude of governments and companies. Additionally, even published data, which might seem privacy compliant, can violate user privacy due to the leakage of real user identities. This paper proposes a privacy risk scoring model for open data architectures to analyse and reduce the risks associated with the opening of data. The key elements consist of a new set of open data attributes reflecting privacy risks versus benefits trades-offs. Further, these attributes are evaluated using a decision engine and a scoring matrix intro a privacy risk indicator (PRI) and a privacy risk mitigation measure (PRMM). Privacy Risk Indicator (PRI) represents the predicted value of privacy risks associated with opening such data and privacy risk mitigation measures represent the measurements need to be applied on the data to avoid the expected privacy risks. The model is exemplified through five real use cases concerning open datasets.

control-flow dependence has always been posited as a substantial dilemma against program acceleration. With the availability of instruction-level parallel architectures, ifconversion optimization has become pivotal for extracting parallelism from serial programs. While many if-conversion optimization heuristics have been proposed in the literature, few of them investigated the proximity to optimality paying more concern to the input program subjectively. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of the LLVM if-conversion transformation using a broad range optimality analysis technique. The whole optimization space of branch instructions within an arbitrarily selected hotspot function of a program is analyzed, tackling the best-performing combination sequence of converted or non-converted branches. In order to precisely observe the influence of selectively converted branches we magnify individual function call and study the behavior with different call circumstances and input data detecting the impact of data size and distribution. We implemented our technique on LLVM 3.6.1 compilation infrastructure and experimented on several representative kernels of the SPEC-CPU2006 vl.l benchmarks suite running on a multicore system of Intel(R) Xeon(R) 3.50GHz processors. Our findings show a performance gain up to 22.7% at the best optimization over the standard optimized code, indicating the need for more aggressive compilation optimization that is able to capture the individual characteristics of every branch. © 2016 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

For patient well-being and also for cost efficiency, constantly improving the medical act is essential. All patients undergo a set of medical tests before going into surgery. In some cases, these tests have to be repeated in different hospitals due to the lack of a system that facilitates presenting and sharing patient's data. We present two e-Health solutions for hospitals and clinics in the medical data field. Our aim was to design and implement a unique system for medical data management. This system allows easy data transfer between medical facilities. It also improves the medical diagnostic and treatment process and it increases the quality of medical care. Also, it improves the communication between patients and physicians, decreases the duration and costs of hospitalization and improves the patient's quality of life. The second medical solution presented in this paper present the results of the medical tests directly to a screen in the operating room, further reducing the time a patient has to wait before going into surgery and also improving the medical act. Both medical solutions were tested in real-world scenarios with promising results.

A battery charging policy that provides privacy guarantees for smart meter systems with finite capacity battery is proposed. For this policy an upper bound on the information leakage rate is provided. The upper bound applies for general random processes modelling the energy consumption of the user. It is shown that the average energy consumption of the user determines the information leakage rate to the utility provider. The upper bound is shown to be tight by deriving the probability law of a random process achieving the bound. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Event-based selective control strategy for raceway reactor: A simulation study

This work presents a simulation study of an event-based selective control strategy for a raceway reactor. The control system aims are to maintain simultaneously a pH and dissolved oxygen within specific limits. In the analyzed control scheme, the pH value is prioritized over the dissolved oxygen, since it has a critical influence on the process performance. Besides, the dissolved oxygen also influences the photosynthesis rate and should be kept within the limits. The control structure is evaluated through simulation, where a nonlinear model for microalgae culture in the raceway photobioreactor is used. Analysis of different configurations allows to determine the most adequate control system setup to achieve the desired goals. The obtained results show that combination of an event-based approach with selective control allows to increase the overall productivity as well as to address effective CO2utilization and aeration system energy minimization. © 2016

Information-theoretic attacks in the smart grid

Gaussian random attacks that jointly minimize the amount of information obtained by the operator from the grid and the probability of attack detection are presented. The construction of the attack is posed as an optimization problem with a utility function that captures two effects: firstly, minimizing the mutual information between the measurements and the state variables;secondly, minimizing the probability of attack detection via the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the distribution of the measurements with an attack and the distribution of the measurements without an attack. Additionally, a lower bound on the utility function achieved by the attacks constructed with imperfect knowledge of the second order statistics of the state variables is obtained. The performance of the attack construction using the sample covariance matrix of the state variables is numerically evaluated. The above results are tested in the IEEE 30-Bus test system.
