In this paper a Wells turbine control is presented. For this purpose, a control scheme for the flow coefficient is derived based on the addition of external resistances in series with the rotor winding of the induction generator connected to the turbine. Due to the stalling behaviour, the generator increases its velocity as the flow coefficient of the turbine approaches the critical point at which the turbine losses power. The proposed control system does appropriately adapt the rotor resistance according to the entry pressure drop. To do so, the control implements a continuous resistance switching depending on the pressure drop and it will be demonstrated that the average power of the turbine and generator are significantly higher in the controlled case than in the uncontrolled one. It is stated that there exist an optimal value of external resistances for each specific range of pressure drop and it is verified that greater input pressure drop does not imply higher power output unless the stalling behaviour is avoided.

This work presents a strategy to track and describe the boundary of an environmental surface using a sequence of incomplete boundary images coming from an UAV with a camera onboard. The algorithm uses all captured images to feed the trajectory, which drives the UAV towards the next point to take the next shot, until the identification is completed. The multiple patterns of the input image make the problem difficult. Our approach orders the points of the image to identify the existent edges, and computes the trajectory as a minimization problem using a multi-objective function that gathers information about the boundary and the polynomial that fit in these edges.

Wave energy is one of the most promising forms of ocean renewable sources because of its high availability. The Wells turbine has been one of the defining technologies in the development of wave energy. In this paper a neural control method for the Wells turbine-generator module is presented. For this purpose, a neural control using the backpropagation algorithm has been implemented, based on the addition of external resistances in series with the rotor winding of the induction generator connected to the turbine. The proposed control system does appropriately adapt the rotor resistance according to the pressure drop entry. It will be shown how the controller avoids the stalling behaviour and that the average power of the generator fed into the grid is significantly higher in the controlled case than in the uncontrolled one.

This paper proposes a smart video surveillance system with real-time moving object (primarily human) detection and identification for solving the problem of excessive power consumption in indoor public places. The proposed detection system is able to handle several known constraints such as changing illumination conditions, occlusion, clutter or even irrelevant extraneous motion. It keeps track of the number of humans in the vicinity and takes measures to gradually increase or decrease the luminosity depending on the number of people within its sight.

Wheelchair on two wheels is an interesting and challenging control problem. The challenge is in the design and implementation of suitable control strategies for a two wheeled wheelchair to perform comparably similar to normal four wheeled wheelchair. A wheelchair on two wheels is expected not to take much space during mobility as compared to when it is on four wheels. Moreover, disabled people are encouraged and expected to do most things that others can do and hence lead an independent life. Thus, wheelchairs on two wheels are needed for disabled persons to perform some of the essential tasks in their living and work environments. In this research a model of the standard wheelchair is developed as a test and verification platform using Visual Nastran software. Novel fuzzy logic control strategies are designed for lifting up the chair and maintaining stability and balance while on two wheels. Simulation results of the proposed control strategy are presented and discussed.

This paper proposes a robust algorithm for detecting interest points based on the NonsubSampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT). The NSCT provides multiscale decomposition with directional filters at each scale. Furthermore, NSCT is very efficient in extracting the geometric information of images and therefore it has very good feature localization. The NSCT-based point detector is compared to the widely used Harris and Difference of Gaussian (DoG) interest point detectors. The experimental results reveal the robustness of the proposed algorithm to rotation, scale and viewpoint changes.

This paper analyzes the possibility of using a new philosophy of experimental engineering laboratory for power electronic converters applied to electric machine control. The aim is to develop an environment which, on the one hand, permits the students to design hardware and software blocks that can be incorporated into an electronic power system and, on the other hand, allows the communication and control of this system via the web. The students work in groups, on asynchronous and synchronous software platforms, on the same task and they should look for the best solution for the required design. The drawbacks related to high voltages and currents, waiting for attention from the professor, the high cost of maintenance and updating of an experimental laboratory can be overcome with the use of the Shared Hybrid Virtual-Experimental Laboratory (SHVEL). The validation of the proposed method has been carried out on an experimental system based on the digital signal processor DSP56F807 and on the free software platform FreeMaster from the commercial firm Freescale™.

The non-invasive fet al Electrocardiogram (FECG) can provide reliable information about the fetus'state. The original FECG signal is nevertheless very complex and severely contaminated by external disturbances or noises. It is very hard, even not impossible, to reliably extract the FECG from the abdominal signal using traditional techniques. In this work the recursive least squares (RLS) based adaptive noise canceling (ANC) approach is applied to eliminate the maternal ECG (MECG) and hence to extract the FECG. The experimental results have demonstrated that the developed ANC approach can speed up convergence of the normalized least mean squares (NLMS) algorithm and is able to track non-stationary FECG signal in an adaptive manner.

Tracking and Disturbance Rejection of Extended Constant Signals with Unknown Disturbance Structure Using MPC

This paper considers the Model Predictive control (MPC) set point tracking/regulation problem for a discrete LTI system, which is subject to a class of unbounded disturbances/tracking signals called extended constant signals of unknown structure. Examples of disturbances which belong to this class include constant disturbances as well as unbounded signals such as w[k]=√k and log (k), k=1,2,3,…. A discussion re the choice of window size for MPC is also made; in particular, it is shown that the window size must be larger than a certain lower bound, which can be easily determined, in order to guarantee closed loop stability in MPC control. The main contribution is a formulation of the system's plant equations under which, for output regulation, no knowledge of the structure or magnitude of disturbances is needed in order to achieve set point regulation for this class of extended constant signals. The result is of interest since it also implies that no disturbance observer is necessary in order to solve the set point tracking/regulation problem when full-state feedback is available. The results are experimentally verified.

The interference effects on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are here dealt with. In particular, attention is paid to the IEEE 802.11g standard, with Bluetooth signals, Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and competitive data traffic acting as interferer. The analysis is conducted experimentally following a cross-layer approach and through the deployment of a proper testbed within a semi-anechoic chamber. The purpose is to investigate on the effects of some common types of interference on a WLAN supporting VoIP applications, and to deduce from the experiments valuable hints for improving the setup of a WLAN in the presence of interference. Cross-layer measurements are performed at network/transport, physical and application layer. © 2008 IEEE.
