This paper addresses the problem of multi sensor detection and high resolution signal parameter estimation using joint maximum a posteriori detection and high order nonlinear filtering techniques. The model-based fusion approach offers the potential for increased target resolution in range/azimuth space. The technique employs joint detection/estimation filters (JDEF) for target detection and parameter localization. The JDEF approach segments the aggregate nonlinear model over the entire target resolution space into subcells. This partitioning leads to extremely accurtate detection and parameter estimation. The proposed JDEF approach has a built-in capability for automatic data alignment from multiple sensors, and can be used for centralized, noncentralized, and distributed data fusion. © 1993 IEEE.

It is shown that fractal dimension estimates and Gabor wavelet coefficients are valid features of segmenting high-resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar imagery. Results of training a radial basis function neural network using fractal dimension features, Gabor wavelet coefficients, and a combination of both fractal and Gabor wavelet features are presented. Current research into combining these two techniques both theoretically and empirically is presented. One-foot resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar imagery is successfully segmented into culture, tree, field, and shadow regions.< >

The paper deals with the instantaneous power theory in three‐phase circuits by using the instantaneous time phasors of voltage and current. Particularly it is shown that the instantaneous components of the current time‐phasor in a rotating reference frame p‐q, oriented in such a way that the instantaneous voltage time‐phasor points to the p‐axis direction, represent the active and reactive currents. These components give rise to instantaneous real and imaginary powers, respectively. The spectral analysis of the above‐mentioned time‐phasors gives the harmonic symmetrical components of positive and negative sequence of voltage and current three‐phase systems. The line‐by‐line product of the voltage sequence spectrum by the complex conjugate of the current sequence spectrum gives the DC components of the instantaneous real and imaginary powers. The paper shows also that the instantaneous active and reactive currents are different from those defined on grounds of the Fryze's theory, which can be determined from the voltage and current sequence spectra. This paper presents optimum pairing and ordering (P/O) conditions for simultaneous reduction in total capacitance, sensitivity and output noise of cascade SC filters. First, investigating relations among conditions proposed for minimizing these three parameters independently, termed, CTmin, Smin and Nmin conditions, we make it clear that there is no P/O assignment with which the three parameters can be simultaneously minimized. Then we verify that Nmin condition is valid in reducing two other parameters. Trade-off optimum conditions are proposed by combining Nmin with Smin and CTmin. These conditions can limit the number of P/O assignments, in which an optimum P/O assignment for simultaneous reduction of three parameters can be searched out easily. Depending upon applications, the trade-off optimum condition can be slightly modified by adjusting the proportion of CTmin Smin and Nmin. Efficiency of the proposed trade-off optimum conditions is confirmed through computer simulation using several kinds of filters. © 1992 IEEE.

An intelligent and robust voting service is proposed. The novel voting service, is capable of forming a consensus based on performance of redundant applications in the value, time and reliability *** voter is distributed using a hot backup approach to ensure timely recovery in the event of voter failure. Specification diversity is advocated in order to improve upon the effectiveness of design diversity. The voter is designed to be a system building block, embedded in a framework of design tools which will allow the developer to express control concepts, such as deadlines, priorities, re-plication and voting.

A nonlinear adaptive detector/estimator is introduced for single and multiple radar data processing. The problem of target detection from returns of monostatic radar(s) is formulated as a nonlinear joint detection/estimation problem on the unknown parameters in the signal return. The problems of detecting the target and estimating its parameters are considered jointly. A bank of spatially and temporally localized nonlinear filters is used to estimate the a posteriori likelihood of the existence of the target in a given space-time resolution cell. Within a given cell, the localized filters are used to produce refined spatial estimates of the target parameters. A decision logic is used to decide on the existence of a target within any given resolution cell based on the a posteriori estimates obtained from the likelihood functions. Simulation results show excellent detection capabilities and excellent resolution in target parameter estimation for both single and multiple sensor data. © 1992 IEEE.

The authors present a general approach to determining the number of sinusoids present in measurements corrupted by additive white Gaussian and nonGaussian noise. The approach involves the simultaneous application of maximum a posteriori detection and nonlinear estimation using either the extended Kalman filter when the noise is Gaussian, or the extended high order filter when the noise is nonGaussian. The problem is formulated as a multiple hypothesis testing problem with assumed known a priori probabilities for each hypothesis. The advantage of the approach lies in the potential to accommodate time-varying as well as time-invariant parameters in the measurement model. Experimental evaluation of the approach demonstrates excellent performance in selecting the correct model order and estimating the system parameters even for signal-to-noise ratios as low as -5 dB. © 1992 IEEE.

An effective method for visual pattern recognition using morphological techniques is presented. It is shown that it can be successfully used for the recognition of deformed letters. The method extracts morphological information by the successive dilation of an idealized letter set. At each stage a properly defined similarity index is computed. The maximum values of the similarity index for each stored letter are compared and are used for the classification decision. Classification results are presented for a set of deformed capital English letters with a realistic level of deformation. Skeletonization of the deformed pattern is shown to improve the performance of the classification method. The described method can be easily implemented using a parallel architecture.< >

The procedure of harmonic insertion is generalized in this paper. Analytical expressions of the voltage spectra are derived. The insertion of the 3rd harmonic to the modulating signal, which is of particular interest, is considered as a special case. It is demonstrated in this case that the fundamental harmonic component of the phase and the line‐to‐line voltage is not affected by the insertion of the 3rd harmonic for sufficiently high values of the chopping ratio. However it has been shown that the higher harmonic spectrum is significantly improved as compared to the case of pure sinusoidal modulation. For different values of the fundamental component the optimal values of the amplitude of the third harmonic to be inserted have been calculated so that the distortion factor of the higher harmonic spectrum is minimized. Other cases of harmonic insertion are also considered which provide spectrum efficiency improvement. Experimental results are given which have been obtained by means of a microcomputer controlled PWM generator constructed for this purpose. Copyright © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Modern CAD environments for control systems engineering have begun to support substantial functionality beyond modeling, numerical analysis, and simulation. Three major areas that have emerged in the last five years are advanced user interfaces, data-base management, and expert-systems support ("expert aiding"), In addition, there has been a steady thrust to integrate more completely the various functionalities and software that comprise computer-aided control engineering (CACE). These trends have produced CACE environments which have relatively modest improvements in numerical quality but a vastly different "feel" in terms of integration, support, and "user friendliness. The basic considerations and requirements for a CACE user interface (UI), data-base manager (DBM), and expert aicling are discussed in detail. In many cases, these will be illustrated by examples based on various CACE software suites including the new GE MEAD CACE environment; the basic thrust will be to define needs and show how these can be met. The GE MEAD Project involves the integration of powerful CACE packages under a supervisor which coordinates the execution of these packages with a modern UI, a CACE-oriented DBM, and an expert system. The user interface is designed to facilitate access to the CACE package capabilities by users with widely different levels of familiarity with the environment. The data-base manager keeps track of system models that evolve over time and associates each analysis or design result with the correct model instance. The expert system supplies the machinery for expert aiding complicated or heuristic procedures to free the user from low-level detail and tedium. This system thus exemplifies the trends mentioned above
