A general review of the Industrial planning sector in the Arab World is presented. A sectorial analysis is given showing the interaction between the different concerned Governmental Organization together with their impact on the planning process. The role of the public and private sectors has been discussed with special emphasis on the hletallurgical Industries as an example. The interaction between national and regional planning organizations is considered.

Expert system technology is receiving increasing popularity
and acceptance in the engineering community. This is due to
the fact that there actually exists a close match between
the capabilities of the current generation expert systems
and the requirements of engineering practice. Prepared by a
distinguished team of experts, this book provides a balanced
state-of-the-art presentation of the design principles of
engineering expert systems, and a representative picture of
their capabilities to assist efficiently the design,
diagnosis and operation of complex industrial plants.
Among the application areas covered are the following:
hardware synthesis, industrial plant layout design, fault
diagnosis, process control, image analysis, computer
communication, electric power systems, intelligent control,
robotics, and manufacturing systems. The book is appropriate
for the researcher and the professional. The researcher can
save considerable time in searching the scattered technical
information on engineering expert systems. The professional
can have readily available a rich set of guidelines and
techniques that are applicable to a wide class of
engineering domains.

Research of discrete event systems is strongly motivated by applications in flex ible manufacturing, in traffic control and in concurrent and real-time software verification and design, just to mention a few important areas. Discrete event system theory is a promising and dynamically developing area of both control theory and computer science. Discrete event systems are systems with non-numerically-valued states, inputs, and outputs. The approaches to the modelling and control of these systems can be roughly divided into two groups. The first group is concerned with the automatic design of controllers from formal specifications of logical requirements. This re search owes much to the pioneering work of P.J. Ramadge and W.M. Wonham at the beginning of the eighties. The second group deals with the analysis and op timization of system throughput, waiting time, and other performance measures for discrete event systems. The present book contains selected papers presented at the Joint Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES'92) held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on Au gust 26-28, 1992 and organized by the Institute of Information Theory and Au tomation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague, Czechoslovakia, by the automaticcontrol Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) , Zurich, Switzerland, and by the Department of Computing Science of the University of Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands.

This book and its companion volumes, LNCS vols. 5551, 5552 and 5553, constitute the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2009), held during May 26–29, 2009 in Wuhan, China. Over the past few years, ISNN has matured into a well-established premier international symposium on neural n- works and related fields, with a successful sequence of ISNN symposia held in Dalian (2004), Chongqing (2005), Chengdu (2006), Nanjing (2007), and Beijing (2008). Following the tradition of the ISNN series, ISNN 2009 provided a high-level inter- tional forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present state-of-the-art research in neural networks and related fields, and also to discuss with international colleagues on the major opportunities and challenges for future neural network research. Over the past decades, the neural network community has witnessed tremendous - forts and developments in all aspects of neural network research, including theoretical foundations, architectures and network organizations, modeling and simulation, - pirical study, as well as a wide range of applications across different domains. The recent developments of science and technology, including neuroscience, computer science, cognitive science, nano-technologies and engineering design, among others, have provided significant new understandings and technological solutions to move the neural network research toward the development of complex, large-scale, and n- worked brain-like intelligent systems. This long-term goal can only be achieved with the continuous efforts of the community to seriously investigate different issues of the neural networks and related fields.
