This book and its companion volumes, LNCS vols. 5551, 5552 and 5553, constitute the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2009), held during May 26–29, 2009 in Wuhan, China. Over the past few years, ISNN has matured into a well-established premier international symposium on neural n- works and related fields, with a successful sequence of ISNN symposia held in Dalian (2004), Chongqing (2005), Chengdu (2006), Nanjing (2007), and Beijing (2008). Following the tradition of the ISNN series, ISNN 2009 provided a high-level inter- tional forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present state-of-the-art research in neural networks and related fields, and also to discuss with international colleagues on the major opportunities and challenges for future neural network research. Over the past decades, the neural network community has witnessed tremendous - forts and developments in all aspects of neural network research, including theoretical foundations, architectures and network organizations, modeling and simulation, - pirical study, as well as a wide range of applications across different domains. The recent developments of science and technology, including neuroscience, computer science, cognitive science, nano-technologies and engineering design, among others, have provided significant new understandings and technological solutions to move the neural network research toward the development of complex, large-scale, and n- worked brain-like intelligent systems. This long-term goal can only be achieved with the continuous efforts of the community to seriously investigate different issues of the neural networks and related fields.

Structurally Constrained controllers: Analysis and Synthesis studies the control of interconnected systems with a particular application in network, power systems, flight formations, etc. It introduces four important problems regarding the control of such systems and then proposes proper techniques for solving them.

All real systems in nature - physical, biological and engineering ones - can malfunction and fail due to faults in their components. Logically, the chances for malfunctions increase with the systems' complexity. The complexity of engineering systems is permanently growing due to their growing size and the degree of automation, and accordingly increasing is the danger of fail ing and aggravating their impact for man and the environment. Therefore, in the design and operation of engineering systems, increased attention has to be paid to reliability, safety and fault tolerance. But it is obvious that, compared to the high standard of perfection that nature has achieved with its self-healing and self-repairing capabilities in complex biological organisms, fault management in engineering systems is far behind the standards of their technological achievements; it is still in its infancy, and tremendous work is left to be done. In technical control systems, defects may happen in sensors, actuators, components of the controlled object - the plant, or in the hardware or soft ware of the control framework. Such defects in the components may develop into a failure of the whole system. This effect can easily be amplified by the closed loop, but the closed loop may also hide an incipient fault from be ing observed until a situation has occurred in which the failing of the whole system has become unavoidable.

Software reuse as an umbrella concept has been around for several decades. Over time, new techniques and approaches have been proposed to implement the concept, from libraries of reusable assets to product lines, to generative methods. These latter techniques are mostly used in intra-organizational reuse, and require considerable formal knowledge over the evolution of technology and required functionality in a domain over several years. On the other end of the spectrum, extra-organizational reuse is based on reuse of off-the-shelf (OTS) software (both open and closed source, acquired for free or for a fee). Here, a limited investment and immediate availability of the assets have widely spread the approach. On the other hand, the reusing organization has no control on the evolution of the functionality and assumptions of the asset. Even when the assets are open source, they are seldom modified. The theme for this ninth meeting is the reuse of off-the-shelf (OTS) components and related problems: * Documentation of OTS components * Processes to identify and select OTS components * Integration and evolution problems * Reliability and security of OTS components and legal issues * Interaction with the developer community or with the vendor The proceedings you are holding cover these issues as well as development and use of product lines, variability modeling, aspect-based development, composition of components and services.
