The work demonstrates the process of developing a machine learning model for a system for monitoring and controlling the quality of predough at a bakery. This system will provide continuous analysis of the predough parameters, such as temperature, humidity, lifting force and titranic acidity, which will ensure timely detection of deviations in the quality of the predough and avoid production problems. In addition, it will help automate the quality control process and ensure the stability of production processes. Analysis and forecasting of dough parameters will improve the quality of produced bread or other bakery products. Management based also on the predicted values of technological indicators of the predough will allow the enterprise to avoid unnecessary costs of materials and energy and increase economic efficiency. As part of the study, seven machine learning models were created and reviewed, including three linear and four varieties of binary decision trees. An analysis of the best model - a regression decision tree - was carried out, confirming its effectiveness and the validity of the resulting hierarchical structure, in particular, the prediction of important indicators of predough with a high degree of reliability, which indicates its importance in practical applications in production. The created model can be used to monitor and control product quality in real time, allowing operators to quickly identify and correct any deviations in process performance. Also, by analyzing changes in the variables of the predough production process, it is possible to identify precursors of possible production accidents or deviations in product quality, which will allow timely measures to be taken to avoid them.

Brain-computer Interfaces (BCI) allows systems to be controlled by signals derived from Electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis. Several low-cost electroencephalographs are available on the market that provides high-quality EEG signals. A very interesting approach in this domain is to represent a user's mental state by using an EEG signal. In this paper, we propose a method to represent and describe the user's mental state by exploiting Cellular Automata (CA). Using BCI, CA, and Autoencoder Neural Network we provide a graphical description and audible representation of the current mental state of the user wearing the device. We demonstrated experimentally the capability of generating a representation of the mental states, both CA and sound texture, while at the same time can be exploited as a biofeedback approach.

The purpose of the work is to investigate the possibilities of soft-start devices with gate turn-off thyristors in electric drives of bow thrusters with adjustable propeller pitch to increase reliability, reduce mechanical shocks and currents, and improve electromagnetic compatibility with the ship’s electrical power plant. The characteristic features of these drives are operation on fan load and the need for a smooth start in a sufficiently short time to reduce impact torque in the mechanism. As a result of the analysis, a solution with a shunt capacitor is proposed, which provides high accuracy of regulation of the 1st harmonic of the voltage on the motor according to the given law. The minimum value of the capacitor capacity was found, which for the ABB/AMD710L8T motor with a capacity of 2.7 MW is 150-250 μF at switching frequencies from 500 to 1000 Hz. For the first time, the dependences of the GTO switching frequency on the capacitor capacity and the coefficient of harmonic distortion of the current in the stator phase of the selected motor were found. Frequencies are obtained that correspond to the actual physical characteristics of the GTO (500–1000 Hz). At such switching frequencies, the characteristics of the soft start device practically do not differ from the ideal regulator of the phase voltage of an asynchronous motor. This makes it possible to synthesize closed systems with stabilization of the main coordinates of soft starter electric drive, two-circuit systems with the formation of a given tachogram with torque limitation. All this makes it feasible to implement soft start devices based on gate turn-off thyristors.

In the last decades the exponential growth of available information, together with the availability of systems able to learn the knowledge that is present in the data, has pushed towards the complete automation of many decision-making processes in public and private organizations. This circumstance is posing impelling ethical and legal issues since a large number of studies and journalistic investigations showed that software-based decisions, when based on historical data, perpetuate the same prejudices and bias existing in society, resulting in a systematic and inescapable negative impact for individuals from minorities and disadvantaged groups. The problem is so relevant that the terms data bias and algorithm ethics have become familiar not only to researchers, but also to industry leaders and policy makers. In this context, we believe that the ISO SQuaRE standard, if appropriately integrated with risk management concepts and procedures from ISO 31000, can play an important role in democratizing the innovation of software-generated decisions, by making the development of this type of software systems more socially sustainable and in line with the shared values of our societies. More in details, we identified two additional measure for a quality characteristic already present in the standard (completeness) and another that extends it (balance) with the aim of highlighting information gaps or presence of bias in the training data. Those measures serve as risk level indicators to be checked with common fairness measures that indicate the level of polarization of the software classifications/predictions. The adoption of additional features with respect to the standard broadens its scope of application, while maintaining consistency and conformity. The proposed methodology aims to find correlations between quality deficiencies and algorithm decisions, thus allowing to verify and mitigate their impact. © 2021 for this paper by its authors

Sleep apnoea is a common sleep disorder during human sleep. It is usually diagnosed by a doctor after recording one nights’ sleep signals. Patients have to go to the hospital to record sleep signals, which is time-consuming and resource-intensive. The study focused on two signals, pulse data and oximetry data, with the aim of detecting apnoea using a single signal. This paper introduced an anomaly detection approach using the adaptive cumulative sum (ACUSUM) change point detection algorithm to monitor outliers in the signal. In addition, the test results of ACUSUM will be compared with the test results of classical CUSUM. Besides, the threshold selection has been changed from an unchanging constant to a value related to the standard deviation of the selected signal based on a rational subgroup process. The results of the comparison confirm that ACUSUM is better than classical CUSUM in the accuracy of automatic detection.

An overview of the ancillary services in the Nigerian power sector is provided in this work. These services are essential in the power system because they are additional services required by the grid during critical times to enable the power grid to operate in a stable, safe, and reliable manner. The ancillary services provided as stipulated in the Grid Code are black start, frequency control, operating reserves, and voltage control. The System Operator procures the relevant ancillary service depending on the requirement of the grid at a particular time. The paper further presents some ways of improving the viability of ancillary services for the energy grid of Nigeria. These include making incentives more attractive for suppliers of ancillary services, utilizing more hydroelectric power plants for generation and load balancing, integrating distributed generation to provide support to the reactive power, and making necessary investments in the grid. © 2023 IEEE.

A complex-variable sliding-mode control (SMC) algorithm is proposed to govern inverters interfacing renewable energy sources (RESs) with the electrical grid. It is conceived to control the instantaneous energy stored in the passive components of the system and its rate of change, as well as the instantaneous reactive energy and power exchanged with the grid. The stability of the resulting closed-loop system is analyzed, and tuning of the designed SMC algorithm is also tackled. In addition, the design and tuning of a nonlinear observer estimating the renewable power supplied to the DC link are addressed. The overall control scheme obtained by combining the proposed complex-variable SMC algorithm with such observer is assessed in simulation, demonstrating its outstanding tracking performance and high robustness in presence of large parameter variations.

A novel nonlinear controller that inherently limits the RMS value of a three-phase grid-following inverter current is presented in this paper. Using the dynamic model of the inverter in the rotating dq reference frame, a nonlinear control scheme is formulated to ensure accurate real and reactive power regulation with RMS current limitation that avoids the use of saturation units with upper/lower limit adaptation, as commonly used in the existing approaches. In particular, it is analytically proven by using fundamental nonlinear systems theory, that the RMS value of the inverter current will never violate a given maximum value, both during the transient response and at the steady-state. Moreover, a detailed root locus analysis is provided to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the desired equilibrium point for the closed-loop system. Finally, to validate the proposed controller performance, simulation results of a grid-following three-phase inverter equipped with the proposed control approach are presented under both normal and unrealistic values of the real and reactive power setpoints. © 2020 Institution of engineering and Technology. Even if the electrical grid is subject to constrained disturbances, doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbines should be able to synchronize their stator voltage with that of the grid to ensure a smooth connection to the electric power system. In order to face the synchronization task under simultaneously unbalanced and harmonically distorted grid voltages, a complex-valued sliding-mode control (SMC) algorithm, naturally chatter-free and phase-locked loop (PLL)-independent, is proposed. By accomplishing a stationary reference frame-based design, decomposition into positive- and negative-sequences and harmonic components is not required. The finite-time convergence of such algorithm is analytically demonstrated when subject to both parametric and unmodeled uncertainties, as well as disturbances. Simulation over a 2-MW DFIG model has been carried out in order to validate the performance and robustness of the suggested control structure under unbalanced and harmonically distorted grid voltage, variable speed wind profile, substantial parameter deviations and grid frequency variation.
