The considerable increase of wind turbine rotor size and weight in the last years has made impossible to control as they were controlled 20 years ago. The cost of energy is an essential role to maintain this type of energy as a viable alternative in economic terms with traditional or other renewable energies. Through the last decades many different flow control devices have been developed. Most of them were shaped for aeronautical issues and this was its first research application. Currently researchers are working to optimize and introduce these types of devices in multi megawatt wind turbines. Gurney flap (GF) is a vane perpendicular to the airfoil surface with a size between 0.1 and 3% of the airfoil chord length, placed in the lower or upper side of the airfoil close to the trailing edge of the airfoil. When GFs are appropriately designed, they increase the total lift of the airfoil while reducing the drag. Thanks to the implementation of the of this flow control device the efficiency of a wind turbine improves, which results on an increase in the power generation. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.

Epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people worldwide. Despite its prevalence, the recurrence of seizures can be mitigated only 70% of the time through medication. Furthermore, surgery success rates range from 30% - 70% because of our limited understanding of how a seizure starts. However, one leading hypothesis suggests that a seizure starts because of a critical transition due to an instability. Unfortunately, we lack a meaningful way to quantify this notion that would allow physicians to not only better predict seizures but also to mitigate them. Hence, in this paper, we develop a method to not only characterize the instability of seizures but also to leverage these conditions to stabilize the system underlying these seizures. Remarkably, evidence suggests that such critical transitions are associated with long-term memory dynamics, which can be captured by considering linear fractional-order systems. Subsequently, we provide for the first time tractable necessary and sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic stability of discrete-time linear fractional-order systems. Next, we propose a method to obtain a stabilizing control strategy for these systems using linear matrix inequalities. Finally, we apply our methodology to a real-world epileptic patient dataset to provide insight into mitigating epilepsy and designing future cyber-neural systems.

The Electrical engineering undergraduate program of the Escola Politécnica of the Universidade de São Paulo has created an alternative innovative curriculum path for its freshmen students in 2024. The Competency-based Path emphasizes the development of competencies and skills for the unprecedented technological advancements that necessitate a holistic education for future electrical engineers, preparing them with practical skills for real-world challenges. The program was designed using an innovative methodology and centers around semester-long or year-long integrative projects. Local Topology Inference of Mobile Robotic Networks under Formation control

The interaction topology is critical for efficient cooperation of mobile robotic networks (MRNs). We focus on the local topology inference problem of MRNs under formation control, where an inference robot with limited observation range can manoeuvre among the formation robots. This problem faces new challenges brought by the highly coupled influence of unobservable formation robots, inaccessible formation inputs, and unknown interaction range. The novel idea here is to advocate a range-shrink strategy to perfectly avoid the influence of unobservable robots while filtering the input. To that end, we develop consecutive algorithms to determine a feasible constant robot subset from the changing robot set within the observation range, and estimate the formation input and the interaction range. Then, an ordinary least squares based local topology estimator is designed with the previously inferred information. Resorting to the concentration measure, we prove the convergence rate and accuracy of the proposed estimator, taking the estimation errors of previous steps into account. Extensions on nonidentical observation slots and more complicated scenarios are also analyzed. Comprehensive simulation tests and method comparisons corroborate the theoretical findings. In task consolidation, idle resources consume a major amount of energy consumption. The framework of linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems has shown to be a powerful tool for the design of controllers for complex nonlinear systems using linear tools. In this work, we derive novel methods that allow to synthesize LPV state-feedback controllers directly from only a single sequence of data and guarantee stability and performance of the closed-loop system. We show that if the measured open-loop data from the system satisfies a persistency of excitation condition, then the full open-loop and closed-loop input-scheduling-state behavior can be represented using only the data. With this representation we formulate data-driven analysis and synthesis problems, where the latter yields controllers that guarantee stability and performance in terms of infinite horizon quadratic cost, generalized H2-norm and 2-gain of the closed-loop system. The controllers are synthesized by solving a semi-definite program. Additionally, we provide a synthesis method to handle noisy measurement data. Competitive performance of the proposed data-driven synthesis methods is demonstrated w.r.t. model-based synthesis in multiple simulation studies, including a nonlinear unbalanced disc system. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

The paper is devoted to study of the influence of rolling modes on the performance of powerful interconnected electric drives of a hot rolling mill under the action of an electromagnetic coupling circuit between the electric drives of the roughing and finishing groups. The action of the electromagnetic coupling circuit manifests itself in the form of the influence of impact loads of synchronous electric drives on the angular velocity of direct current electric drives of the finishing group of the mill. The parameters of the electromagnetic coupling circuit are determined by the power supply scheme and equipment parameters. Values of impact loads applied to a synchronous motor depend on the rolling process parameters, in particular, the chemical composition of the rolled steel and the temperature of the ingot. The paper presents the results of calculating the rolling power for various rolling mode parameters. Using mathematical modeling in Simulink, numerical estimates of the influence of rolling modes on the magnitude of the voltage drop in the power supply unit and the drop in the angular velocity of the electric drive of the finishing group were obtained on the example of a wide-strip hot rolling mill 1700 of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC.

The technology of reconfigurable optical networks (RONs) is growing to be a promising solution to effectively cater to the rapidly increasing traffic generated by the digital society. Optical technology emerges as a viable alternative because to its capacity to offer a substantial bandwidth, little latency, and enhanced overall performance. Nevertheless, it is imperative to effectively manage the physical resources comprising a data center. This study provides an experimental demonstration of the RONs, which is enhanced by a control plane. The implementation relies on the monitoring of real-time network statistics. This enables the execution of various activities, including as network slice provisioning and reconfiguration, assignment of packet priority classes, and dynamic operations. These actions are performed to ensure the attainment of the desired Quality of Service level. The experimental results show the successfully implementation of RONs using Mininet Emulator and sFlow traffic monitoring technology. The results approve that optical datacenter has minimum delay with low OSNR even with long distance and fast switching time.

Precise localization is essential for the operation of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in urban scenarios. Camera and LiDAR-based solutions are currently used in some of the CAVs around the world, but they entail an expensive performance in terms of computational time and economic cost. Due to this, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based solutions remains the preferred solution for positioning Automated Vehicles in different Operational Design Domains (ODDs). Although several improvements in system reliability have been made recently, in case of positioning failures most of the architectures rely on system redundancy or automation disengagements to achieve minimal risk conditions. This paper presents a fail-safe decision architecture for mitigating positioning failures of automated vehicles in urban scenarios. The proposed architecture utilizes a combination of sensor fusion localization and decision-making modules to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle in the event of a positioning failure. The proposed approach is evaluated through simulation in a representative urban scenario and is shown to effectively handle positioning failures, improving the localization accuracy provided by each information source.

This article presents a control design method for simultaneous shaping of the poles and zeros of linear time-invariant systems, motivated by the application of non-collocated vibration suppression to flexible multi-body systems. An entire suppression of vibrations at a target mass for a given excitation frequencies can be recast into the problem of assigning zeros of the transfer function from the excitation force to the target mass' position. The design requirement of achieving sufficient damping in the closed loop system combined with suppressing vibrations at the target, leads to the minimization of the spectral abscissa function of the closed loop system as a function of the controller parameters, subject to zero location constraints. These constraints exhibit polynomial dependence on the controller parameters. We present two approaches to solve the optimization problem which are both based on constraint elimination followed by application of an algorithm for non-smooth unconstrained optimization. The design approach is applicable to delay-free models as well as time-delay models of retarded and neutral type. Simulations results illustrate its applicability to a spring-mass-damper system.
