Federated Learning is a distributed learning solution for machine learning problems without the need of collecting the available data in a single centralized data centre. With the standard FL approaches, model training is performed locally and a centralized server collects and elaborates the trainable parameters of the local models: even if data are not shared, the presence of the centralized server still rises trust and security issues. In this work, we introduce the Decentralized Federated Learning (DECFEDAVG) algorithm, which aims at achieving complete decentralization by the lack of a coordination server, and compare its performance against the original federated learning algorithm Federated Averaging (FEDAVG) over the Nonintrusive Load Monitoring problem.

The ability of artificial intelligence techniques to build synthesized brand new videos or to alter the facial expression of already existing ones has been efficiently demonstrated in the literature. The identification of such new threat generally known as Deepfake, but consisting of different techniques, is fundamental in multimedia forensics. In fact this kind of manipulated information could undermine and easily distort the public opinion on a certain person or about a specific event. Thus, in this paper, a new technique able to distinguish synthetic generated portrait videos from natural ones is introduced by exploiting inconsistencies due to the prediction error in the re-encoding phase. In particular, features based on inter-frame prediction error have been investigated jointly with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model network able to learn the temporal correlation among consecutive frames. Preliminary results have demonstrated that such sequence-based approach, used to distinguish between original and manipulated videos, highlights promising performances. © 2020 ACM.

The digital twin (DT) is an emerging technology and one of the industry 4.0 technologies. The research in the application of DT in agriculture is currently attracting research interest. In this paper, we provide an overview of DT and discuss possible areas in which it can enable smart agriculture in Nigeria. The benefits and challenges of deploying the DT are also presented. Finally, methods that can be adopted in the application of DT towards solving the problems facing Nigeria's agriculture sector are proposed. © 2021 IEEE.

Improving super-resolution performance using meta-attention layers

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved impressive results across many super-resolution (SR) and image restoration tasks. While many such networks can upscale low-resolution (LR) images using just the raw pixel-level information, the ill-posed nature of SR can make it difficult to accurately super-resolve an image which has undergone multiple different degradations. Additional information (metadata) describing the degradation process (such as the blur kernel applied, compression level, etc.) can guide networks to super-resolve LR images with higher fidelity to the original source. Previous attempts at informing SR networks with degradation parameters have indeed been able to improve performance in a number of scenarios. However, due to the fully-convolutional nature of many SR networks, most of these metadata fusion methods either require a complete architectural change, or necessitate the addition of significant extra complexity. Thus, these approaches are difficult to introduce into arbitrary SR networks without considerable design alterations. In this paper, we introduce meta-attention, a simple mechanism which allows any SR CNN to exploit the information available in relevant degradation parameters. The mechanism functions by translating the metadata into a channel attention vector, which in turn selectively modulates the network’s feature maps. Incorporating meta-attention into SR networks is straightforward, as it requires no specific type of architecture to function correctly. Extensive testing has shown that meta-attention can consistently improve the pixel-level accuracy of state-of-the-art (SOTA) networks when provided with relevant degradation metadata. Despite average memory/runtime overheads of less than ≈2.6%/0.025 seconds for the datasets and models considered, meta-attention improves the performance for both PSNR and SSIM;for PSNR, the gain on blurred/downsampled (×4) images is of 0.2969 dB (on average) and 0.3320 dB for SOTA general and f

The work is a development of the interval criterion for determining the moment when the steady-state value of the transition signal occurs. These criteria are used in technologies related to testing complex objects under conditions of parametric uncertainty of its model. The transient signal is analyzed in on-line mode. Therefore, the accuracy of the decision about the time of the end of the tests determines the cost of conducting them. Such tests are characterized by significant dynamic errors that significantly exceed the allowed level. The reasons for this are the parametric uncertainty in the mathematical model of the object and the inability of the deterministic interval criterion to correctly issue a solution under these conditions. It was previously determined that the interval criterion is characterized by the presence of an asymptotic critical value of the criterion. Exceeding the object's real time constant over the critical value gives a false positive result. This situation is characterized by the fact that the desired moment is falsely determined significantly earlier than the optimal solution. You can avoid this situation if you set the criteria to the maximum constant of the object's time. However, this choice leads to significant time losses when analyzing the transition signal. The solution of the problem of guaranteed provision of a given level of dynamic error over the entire range of values of the object model parameter is possible using a robust algorithm. The basis for constructing a robust criterion is to control the duration of the observation interval. For this purpose, the current information about the analyzed signal is used. There are three ways to apply the current information. The first approach is based on the use of an extrapolated estimate of the established value. This allows you to determine the estimate of the current dynamic error and prevent a falsely positive decision of the criterion. The second approach is based on the analys

This work presents a design and implementation of an enhanced healthcare monitoring system based on the web application framework and the cloud platform using four vital signs such as blood pressure, SPO2, body temperature, and electrocardiogram ECG. Innovative ECG modules were utilized for automatic diagnose like ECG filtering module and the DCNN-based ECG classification module. The solution provides various functionalities and privileges for the users in order to facilitate the work of doctors or emergency staff to monitor patients in order to provide medical support in a timely manner. Also, it supports patients by providing them with medical assistance through the remote interaction with medical professionals taking into consideration the security and privacy of sensitive medical data. © 2020, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Manual visual inspection for defect detection in manufacturing can lead to high false positive rates. This paper compares data mining techniques for the binary classification of defects in flat products in a relatively open scenario. The background provides context on research into data mining-based detection. The methodology is divided into five sections: data collection, selection, preprocessing and transformation, classification, and model evaluation. Each section details the techniques applied, tailored to the application context, with specifying examples. Experiments apply real-world data sets self-collected from production lines. Statistics like prediction accuracy are generated by established data mining evaluation algorithms. Results indicate the efficacy of data mining for automated defect detection over manual approaches. Finally, conclusions summarize findings and discuss the limitations of the current research and planned future work to address the drawbacks. Overall, the formalized methodology and supportive experimental results demonstrate both the viability and potential areas of improvement for data mining in manufacturing quality control. © 2025, The Authors. This paper presents a study for optimizing a hot rolling mill. The paper is devoted to the study of ways to reduce the effect of shock loads of synchronous electric drives of the roughing mill group on the relative lengthening of the metal strip in the inter-stand gap of the rolling stands of the finishing mill group. The elasticity of the metal strip in the inter-stand gap of the rolling mill has a significant impact on the movement of intercoupled multi-motor electric drives of the finishing mill group. Another crucial route of exposure that influences the motion of the electric drives within the finishing mill group involves the electromagnetic connection between the drives in the roughing and finishing mill groups. The impact of the electromagnetically connected circuits is evident through the effect of shock loads from synchronous electric drives on the angular velocity of the direct current electric drives within the finishing mill group. The characteristics of the electromagnetic communication circuit are established by the power grid arrangement and equipment specifications. To assess the quality of work of electric drives of the finishing mill group, it is proposed to use the relative lengthening of the metal strip in the inter-stand gap, which is an important indirect indicator of the quality of rolling. The mathematical model of a hot rolling mill that takes into account both the elasticity of the metal strip that connects the DC electric drives of the finishing group, and the electromagnetic coupling circuit that takes into account the impact loads of synchronous electric drives of the roughing group on the example of the mill 1700 of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC was proposed in this paper. Vehicle-to-cloud is a network access model that aims to share computing resources for vehicles. In vehicle-to-cloud communication, reliable links are critical. Through multipath transmission, comprehensive utilization of heterogeneous wireless networks between the vehicle and the cloud server can effectively improve the reliability and efficiency of transmission. A large number of studies have pointed out that a receive butter can greatly improve the performance of multipath transmission in vehicle-to-cloud communication. However, most of these studies, which use receive buffers to improve multipath transmission performance, do not explicitly specify the design details of the receive butter. A classic design idea is to use a fixed length receive butter. However, this idea makes it difficult to determine the appropriate butter length in a complex vehicle-to-cloud communication scenario. This paper proposes a Dynamic Time-Threshold (DTT) receive buffer. The DTT receive buffer takes into account the instability of vehicular wireless networks, and dynamically adjusts the time-threshold so that the packets in the receive butter do not affect the overall communication performance due to premature departure or excessive waiting. We verified the performance of the DTT receive butter through a large number of simulations and real tests. By comparison, the performance of DTT receive butter is significantly better than the fixed length receive butter. © 2020 IEEE.

The manipulators actuated by Pneumatic Artificial Muscles (PAMs) are characterized by high nonlinearity and time varying of their coefficients. Therefore, nonlinear and robust controllers are required to cope with these challenging control problems. This work presents the development of control design for trajectory tracking of PAM-Actuated manipulator based on Sliding Mode control (SMC). The PSO technique is used to tune the design parameters of proposed controller for further enhancement of controlled PAM system performance. A comparison study has been conducted between the optimal and non-optimal SMC controllers via computer simulation using MATLAB programming software. © 2021 IEEE.
