Heart diseases are the leading cause of death in developed countries. Ascertaining the etiology of cardiomyopathies is still a challenge. The objective of this study was to classify cardiomyopathy patients through cardio, respiratory and vascular variability analysis, considering the vascular activity as the input and output of the baroreflex response. Forty-one cardiomyopathy patients (CMP) classified as ischemic (ICM, 24 patients) and dilated (DCM, 17 patients) were analyzed. Thirty-nine elderly control subjects (CON) were used as reference. From the electrocardiographic, respiratory flow, and blood pressure signals, following temporal series were extracted: beat-to-beat intervals (BBI), total respiratory cycle time series (TT), and end- systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure amplitudes, respectively. Three-dimensional representation of the cardiorespiratory and vascular activities was characterized geometrically, by fitting a polygon that contains 95% of data, and by statistical descriptive indices. The best classifiers were used to build support vector machine models. The optimal model to classify ICM versus DCM patients achieved 92.7% accuracy, 94.1% sensitivity, and 91.7% specificity. When comparing CMP patients and CON subjects, the best model achieved 86.2% accuracy, 82.9% sensitivity, and 89.7% specificity. These results suggest a limited ability of cardiac and respiratory systems response to regulate the vascular variability in these patients.

This paper present two different approaches for modelling a magnetically coupled multiport dc-dc converter. First, from the magnetic coupling equations, the instantaneous dynamic model is obtained. Secondly, a behavioural dynamic model, based on averaging the power flowing among the ports, is derived. Some numerical simulations compare the temporal evolutions with the two obtained models.

Smart meters enable improvements in electricity distribution system efficiency at some cost in customer privacy. Users with home batteries can mitigate this privacy loss by applying charging policies that mask their underlying energy use. A battery charging policy is proposed and shown to provide universal privacy guarantees subject to a constraint on energy cost. The guarantee bounds our strategy's maximal information leakage from the user to the utility provider under general stochastic models of user energy consumption. The policy construction adapts coding strategies for non-probabilistic permuting channels to this privacy problem.

Proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of twin-field quantum key distribution over optical channels with asymmetric losses

Twin-field (TF) quantum key distribution (QKD) is highly attractive because it can beat the fundamental limit of secret key rate for point-to-point QKD without quantum repeaters. Many theoretical and experimental studies have shown the superiority of TFQKD in long-distance communication. All previous experimental implementations of TFQKD have been done over optical channels with symmetric losses. But in reality, especially in a network setting, the distances between users and the middle node could be very different. In this paper, we perform a first proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of TFQKD over optical channels with asymmetric losses. We compare two compensation strategies, that are (1) applying asymmetric signal intensities and (2) adding extra losses, and verify that strategy (1) provides much better key rate. Moreover, the higher the loss, the more key rate enhancement it can achieve. By applying asymmetric signal intensities, TFQKD with asymmetric channel losses not only surpasses the fundamental limit of key rate of point-to-point QKD for 50 dB overall loss, but also has key rate as high as 2.918 × 10−6 for 56 dB overall loss. Whereas no keys are obtained with strategy (2) for 56 dB loss. The increased key rate and enlarged distance coverage of TFQKD with asymmetric channel losses guarantee its superiority in long-distance quantum networks. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Vehicle-to-cloud is a network access model that aims to share computing resources for vehicles. In vehicle-to-cloud communication, reliable links are critical. Through multipath transmission, comprehensive utilization of heterogeneous wireless networks between the vehicle and the cloud server can effectively improve the reliability and efficiency of transmission. A large number of studies have pointed out that a receive butter can greatly improve the performance of multipath transmission in vehicle-to-cloud communication. However, most of these studies, which use receive buffers to improve multipath transmission performance, do not explicitly specify the design details of the receive butter. A classic design idea is to use a fixed length receive butter. However, this idea makes it difficult to determine the appropriate butter length in a complex vehicle-to-cloud communication scenario. This paper proposes a Dynamic Time-Threshold (DTT) receive buffer. The DTT receive buffer takes into account the instability of vehicular wireless networks, and dynamically adjusts the time-threshold so that the packets in the receive butter do not affect the overall communication performance due to premature departure or excessive waiting. We verified the performance of the DTT receive butter through a large number of simulations and real tests. By comparison, the performance of DTT receive butter is significantly better than the fixed length receive butter.

The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans.

Comprehensive review of models and methods for inferences in bio-chemical reaction networks

Key processes in biological and chemical systems are described by networks of chemical reactions. From molecular biology to biotechnology applications, computational models of reaction networks are used extensively to elucidate their non-linear dynamics. Model dynamics are crucially dependent on parameter values which are often estimated from observations. Over past decade, the interest in parameter and state estimation in models of (bio-) chemical reaction networks (BRNs) grew considerably. Statistical inference problems are also encountered in many other tasks including model calibration, discrimination, identifiability and checking as well as optimum experiment design, sensitivity analysis, bifurcation analysis and other. The aim of this review paper is to explore developments of past decade to understand what BRN models are commonly used in literature, and for what inference tasks and inference methods. Initial collection of about 700 publications excluding books in computational biology and chemistry were screened to select over 260 research papers and 20 graduate theses concerning estimation problems in BRNs. The paper selection was performed as text mining using scripts to automate search for relevant keywords and terms. The outcome are tables revealing the level of interest in different inference tasks and methods for given models in literature as well as recent trends. In addition, a brief survey of general estimation strategies is provided to facilitate understanding of estimation methods which are used for BRNs. Our findings indicate that many combinations of models, tasks and methods are still relatively sparse representing new research opportunities to explore those that have not been considered - perhaps for a good reason. Low-power SRAM architectures are especially sensitive to many types of defects that may occur during manufacturing. Among these, resistive defects can appear. This paper analyzes some types of such defects that may impair the device functionalities in subtle ways, depending on the defect characteristics, and that may not be directly or easily detectable by traditional test methods, such as March algorithms. Programming Contests are a special branch in the general area of training and education programming support and cover an important role in the area of computer science. Rather than the direct provision of concepts and exercises related to programming, the main concern is on the algorithms and data structures managed while composing the solution to a problem, and the quality of the solution program itself. Training via web for programming contests is mainly comprised of the activity of producing solutions to problems offered by the online system (online training platforms), whereas a solution is a program, submitted by the student, and it has to be evaluated, in order to assess the programming performance, and give suggestions about the quality of the solution, so to make the experience an informative (learning) one. To the best of our knowledge, supporting a personalized approach and possibly recommendations given by the system, is a challenge. In this paper we tackle the problem of supporting students in their online training toward the participation in a programming contest, aiming at defining a framework that can allow recommendations, under the form of suggestions, to the learner, about the next programming problem to undertake, and that can foster motivation in students by means of a lightweight, badge-based, gamified approach. © 2018 IEEE.

Injecting auxiliary random noise is an effective approach to implementing the online secondary-path modeling (SPM) subsystem in active noise control (ANC). In this paper, a typical FIR-based narrowband ANC (NANC) system with online SPM is proposed to reduce the sinusoidal noise generated by rotating machines, especially its lower frequency portion. A first-order FIR filter or magnitude/phase adjuster (MPA) serves as a sub-controller in each frequency channel. The contributions of this work are twofold. A bandpass filter bank based on IIR notch filters is introduced to mitigate the coupling between the controller (MPAs) and the SPM subsystem, which significantly improves the performance of the overall system. Furthermore, the proposed system requires only one x-filtering block regardless of the number of targeted frequencies, which considerably reduces the computational cost of the system. Simulations as well as application to real noise are conducted to demonstrate that the proposed system is superior to its conventional version in terms of overall system convergence and online SPM quality. © 25th International Congress on Sound and Vibration 2018, ICSV 2018: Hiroshima Calling.
