Data acquisition is an important process in the functioning of any control system. Usually, the acquired signal is analogic, representing a continuous physical measure, and it should be processed in a digital system based on an analog to digital converter (ADC) and a microcontroller. The ADC provides the converted value in ADC units, but the system and its operator need the value expressed in physical units. In this paper we propose a novel design solution for the scaling module, which is a key component of a digital measurement system. The scaling module refers to fitting the sensor result of a variable number of bits depending on the ADC resolution into physical units. A general method for scaling is proposed and a SageMath script is presented for obtaining easily the scaling function. In the last part of the paper, the proposed method is validated in a case study, by calculus, and it is implemented on a low-cost development system in order to create a wireless sensor node. It is a matter of fact that Europe is facing more and more crucial challenges regarding health and social care due to the demographic change and the current economic context. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has stressed this situation even further, thus highlighting the need for taking action. Active and Assisted Living (AAL) technologies come as a viable approach to help facing these challenges, thanks to the high potential they have in enabling remote care and support. Broadly speaking, AAL can be referred to as the use of innovative and advanced Information and Communication Technologies to create supportive, inclusive and empowering applications and environments that enable older, impaired or frail people to live independently and stay active longer in society. AAL capitalizes on the growing pervasiveness and effectiveness of sensing and computing facilities to supply the persons in need with smart assistance, by responding to their necessities of autonomy, independence, comfort, security and safety. The application scenarios addressed by AAL are complex, due to the inherent heterogeneity of the end-user population, their living arrangements, and their physical conditions or impairment. Despite aiming at diverse goals, AAL systems should share some common characteristics. They are designed to provide support in daily life in an invisible, unobtrusive and user-friendly manner. Moreover, they are conceived to be intelligent, to be able to learn and adapt to the requirements and requests of the assisted people, and to synchronise with their specific needs. Nevertheless, to ensure the uptake of AAL in society, potential users must be willing to use AAL applications and to integrate them in their daily environments and lives. In this respect, video- and audio-based AAL applications have several advantages, in terms of unobtrusiveness and information richness. When dealing with epidemic spread, a very common And dangerous situation is the presence of an epidemic disease and a complication, especially in an elderly population or a weakened one. In this case the complication, that alone is not, in general, a fatal disease, may become risky. The ad hoc resource allocation becomes a mandatory task, aiming at the most rationale control strategy. This is the aim of this work, in which a new model is introduced;five classes are considered: The susceptible one, the class of people that has got the immunity from the first dangerous disease (but not from the complication), the class of patients with first disease, the class of those in the risky situation of having both the diseases, and the category of individuals with only the second disease that can still caught the first serious one. control actions are introduced, as vaccination and medication, studying the effects of the different strategies. Preliminary simulation results evidenced the effectiveness of the proposed approach, allowing to determine a control strategy that reduces the number of dead, with an efficient resource allocation. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper the problem of the HIV/AIDS spread reduction is addressed in the framework of optimal control theory. A model recently proposed has been adopted;it considers two classes of susceptible subjects, the wise people and the people with incautious behaviors, and three classes of infected, the ones still not aware of their status, the pre-AIDS patients and the AIDS ones. The control actions involve prevention by information campaign, to reduce the category of subjects with unwise behavior, by test campaign, to reduce the number of subjects not aware of having the virus, and medication on patients with a positive diagnosis. A cost index aiming at the reduction of patients with positive diagnosis is introduced with the conflicting requirements of using as less resources as possible. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper presents practical experiences in an inverter-based microgrid installed at SEPIC research laboratory (Technical University of Catalonia, Spain). These experiences validate recent developments in the control of power electronics-based distributed generators which confirm the opportunity to provide auxiliary services for the utility grid. Harmonic rejection, voltage imbalance reduction, fault-ride through capability, and voltage and frequency regulation are some of the auxiliary services designed to improve the power quality of the future grid. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. Smart meters enable improvements in electricity distribution system efficiency at some cost in customer privacy. Users with home batteries can mitigate this privacy loss by applying charging policies that mask their underlying energy use. A battery charging policy is proposed and shown to provide universal privacy guarantees subject to a constraint on energy cost. The guarantee bounds our strategy's maximal information leakage from the user to the utility provider under general stochastic models of user energy consumption. The policy construction adapts coding strategies for non-probabilistic permuting channels to this privacy problem. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Efficient experimental quantum fingerprinting with wavelength division multiplexing

Quantum communication complexity studies the efficiency of information communication (that is, the minimum amount of communication required to achieve a certain task) using quantum states. One representative example is quantum fingerprinting, in which the simultaneous message passing model is considered and the minimum amount of communication could be exponentially smaller than the classical fingerprinting protocol. Experimental demonstrations based on a practical quantum fingerprinting protocol where coherent states are used to construct the fingerprints, have successfully shown the superiority of quantum fingerprinting. However, as a consequence of using coherent states, the communication time in this coherent quantum fingerprinting (CQF) protocol is increased. Moreover, the minimum amount of information communicated in these experimental demonstrations is largely limited by the dark counts of the single photon detectors. Here, we propose to enhance the performance of the existing CQF protocol through applying wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and simultaneous detection of multiple wavelength channels. We show that the new WDM-CQF protocol can potentially reduce the communication time significantly. More importantly, with the same experimental parameters, the amount of communication is much reduced in the new scheme compared with the original CQF protocol. The more wavelength channels are used, the less communication is required by WDM-CQF protocol. We also perform a proof-of-concept experimental demonstration of the new WDM-CQF protocol with 6 wavelength channels. The experimental results further validate that the new scheme with WDM not only beats the classical protocol, but also reduces the amount of communication required by the original CQF protocol by more than half. This paper proposes a system, by which humanoid robots could imitate human movements to learn human behaviors. Considering the security problem during humanoid robot imitation process, a method of stability identification based on improved Multi-Layer Perception (MLP) is proposed. Firstly, the positions of the human joints are collected by a Kinect. Secondly, the human joints information is transformed into robot angles information by the inverse kinematics equation. Finally, the stability of the robot is identified by the deep neural network, which has the robot angles as its input. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate that compared with the Back Propagation neural network (BPnn), RBF neural network (RBFnn), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), MLP neural network has the best identification accuracy. And the filters we used can overcome the problem of speed pulse, to some extent, and achieved an ideal imitation result.

In this paper, we studied the influence of the presence of a wide river on electromagnetic fields generated by lightning strikes to a tall tower located on a high mountain, using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. In the computations, the lightning channel and the tower are represented by the transmission line model extended to include a tall strike object. Electromagnetic fields are computed at different points located in the river and above the ground. It is shown that the peak value and the electromagnetic field waveforms, computed at the considered observation points, are significantly affected by the presence of the river.

Electrocardiograms are generated by electrical signals, and therefore individual electrocardiogram signals can vary according to the measurement environment that is created by the subjects' behavioral characteristics. Generally, post-exercise electrocardiograms that are used as biometric identification data do not match pre-exercise electrocardiograms owing to temporarily occurring tachycardia, and this reduces user identification performance. Research is being conducted on normalization techniques that make the post-exercise electrocardiograms match the pre-exercise electrocardiograms, but there have been problems caused by the distortion of morphological features such as P waves, QRS complexes, and T waves. To address problem, this study looked at the measurements of electrocardiograms before and after exercise and performed linear interpolation normalization on the P and T waves of a post-exercise tachycardia electrocardiogram cycle to make it match the pre-exercise electrocardiogram cycle. This study also proposes a user recognition system based on this technique. To analyze the proposed system's performance, the lead-I electrocardiogram signals of 20 subjects were measured three times at 2- to 3-day intervals before and after exercise, and a database was constructed. The experiment results showed that the conventional algorithm's maximum recognition performance was 88.33%, and the proposed normalization method's performance was 91.67%. A combined method was found to be both excellent and similar to the proposed method, with a performance of 92.5%.
