A verification code is an automated test method used to distinguish between humans and computers. Humans can easily identify verification codes, whereas machines cannot. With the development of convolutional neural networks, automatically recognizing a verification code is now possible for machines. However, the advantages of convolutional neural networks depend on the data used by the training classifier, particularly the size of the training set. Therefore, identifying a verification code using a convolutional neural network is difficult when training data are insufficient. This study proposes an active and deep learning strategy to obtain new training data on a special verification code set without manual intervention. A feature learning model for a scene with less training data is presented in this work, and the verification code is identified by the designed convolutional neural network. Experiments show that the method can considerably improve the recognition accuracy of a neural network when the amount of initial training data is small. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Instantaneous frequency is a primary parameter used for analyzing vibration signals of rolling bearings under harsh working conditions, which contains rich information besides the rotating speeds of the shaft. Such vibration signals exhibits characteristics of non-stationary and multi-components. The generalized demodulation time-frequency analysis approach is a novel signal processing method, which is suitable for processing non-stationary and multi-component signals. Its novelty lies in that the signal whose time-frequency distributions are curved paths can be transformed into that whose time-frequency distributions are linear paths paralleling time axis by using generalized demodulation. In this paper, to deal with the vibration signals under variable working speed condition, the generalized demodulation as well as a band-pass filter is used to separate the interested component from original vibration signal. The analysis results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.

Laboratory experimentation plays an essential role in control education. To reduce the high costs of maintaining apparatus in traditional labs and to support distance and blended learning, online laboratories are used as a possible alternative to conventional hands-on labs. In these labs it is often desirable to allow students to define their own experiments. This paper presents the definition and implementation of a generic experimentation language for conducting automatic experiments on existing online laboratories. The main objective is to use an online lab, created independently, as a component in which users can perform experiments. To achieve it, authors present the Experiment Application. It is composed by Blockly, to define and design the experiments, and Google Chart, review and visualize the experiment results. This tool offers benefits to students, teachers and, even, lab designers. For the moment, it can be used with any existing lab or simulation created with the authoring tool Easy Java(script) Simulations. Since there are repositories with hundreds of free available labs created with this tool, the potential applicability of the described tool is considerable. To illustrate the utility of the Experiment Application a very well-known system is used: the Simple Harmonic Oscillator system. © 2017

In this paper we explore detection and tracking of astral micro-tubules, a sub-population of microtubules which only exists during and immediately before mitosis and aids in the spindle orientation by connecting it to the cell cortex. Its analysis can be useful to determine the presence of certain diseases, such as brain pathologies and cancer. The proposed algorithm focuses on overcoming the problems regarding fluorescence microscopy images and microtubule behaviour by using various image processing techniques and is then compared with three existing algorithms, tested on consistent sets of images.

This paper considers the path-planning problem in discretized environments, obtained for example by a cell decomposition approach. The specification for the mobile robot can be the classical navigation problem (reach a given region by avoiding the obstacles) or a high-level specification as a Boolean and/or temporal logic formula. We propose a general methodology to compute piecewise linear trajectories consisting in a sequence of intermediate points (waypoints). The waypoints are computed by solving optimization problems whose solutions permit to optimally select the intermediate points on the common facets of traversed cells from the decomposition. The proposed solution is similar to a Model Predictive control (MPC) strategy, in each step an optimization problem is solved over a finite horizon, the first action is considered and the problem is iterated. The method developed in this paper has been implemented and integrated in Robot Motion Toolbox allowing a comparison with other methods by simulation.

Many tracking systems are based on the Global Positioning System (GPS), Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and smart phones, due to their wide availability and reliability. A moving object to be tracked, it sends its GPS coordinates to the observer via SMS. However, the economic feasibility of these systems mainly depends on the total cost of the used SMS messages. In this paper, an economic tracking scheme is proposed to reduce the tracking cost. A GPS-GSM tracking system that uses the proposed scheme is implemented and tested together with two classical tracking systems under two practical test cases. The first test case is a 121 km vehicle trip and the second is a 2.4 km walking journey. The results showed the effectiveness and economic feasibility of the proposed system, which achieved a saving in tracking cost up to about 64% with respect to the tested classical systems.

Global competition has resulted in changes on product demand which have to be managed by current manufacturing systems. In this context, modularity seems to be a suitable solution to provide manufacturing systems with the flexibility required to adapt to demand fluctuations when they occur, maintaining thus competitiveness and productivity. In concrete, machine modularity allows modifying a machine structure but it should be accomplished easily and rapidly. The current work proposes a model-driven methodology that allows modular machine definition and the automatic generation of the corresponding automation project, including the machine hardware configuration and its control software. It is based on the use of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format and technologies for both model definition and code generation. The methodology has been implemented as a tool suite whose proof of concept has been developed for the particular case of the Siemens Totally Integrated Automation Portal (TIA Portal) PLC programming tool.

This paper addresses the problem of basic control loops in wastewater treatment plants. By basic control loops we are referring to the traditional dissolved oxygen and nitrates. In a usual activated sludge process based wastewater treatment plant, these controls are located, respectively, at the aerated and anoxic sections. They are the basic controls more sophisticated control solutions can be based upon. Therefore it is important that these loops perform in an efficient way. The problem is addressed here within the framework provided by the Benchmark Simulation Model Number 1 (BSMI) and by the use of an event-based solution. As far as to the knowledge of the authors, no solution based on this kind of controllers has been proposed already in the literature. The controllers are taken as of similar complexity as the ones provided as default control strategy in the BSMI, therefor being the main difference, the possibilities provided by the event-based implementation. It will be verified that the solution can slightly improve the performance of the already exiting controllers both at loop level as well as at plant operation level.

Shielded through-silicon vias (S-TSV) filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in the via and the shielded layer, and benzocyclobutene or silicon in the insulation layer is presented in this paper. Then, the equivalent transmission line models of the two S-TSVs are established. Based on the model, the forward transmission coefficient and attenuation constant are calculated and the impact of quantum capacitance C q of MWCNT on the transmission performance of S-TSVs is analyzed. The results indicate that the performance of S-TSVs with Si insulation layer in 0-100 GHz can be significantly improved by C q . Also, the performance of S-TSV filled with BCB above 40 GHz can be improved. In addition, the temperature effect of silicon can be balanced by C q . As a result, the heat stability of S-TSV with silicon insulation layer is improved.

In shape optimization, design improvements significantly depend on the dimension and variability of the design space. High dimensional and variability spaces are more difficult to explore, but also usually allow for more significant improvements. The assessment and breakdown of design-space dimensionality and variability are therefore key elements to shape optimization. A linear method based on the principal component analysis has been developed in earlier research to build a reduced-dimensionality design-space, resolving the 95% of the original geometric variance. The paper presents an extension of the method to more efficient nonlinear approaches. Specifically, the use of a deep autoencoder is presented and discussed. The method is demonstrated for the design-space dimensionality reduction and hydrodynamic optimization of the hull form of a USS Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
