Quantum communication complexity studies the efficiency of information communication (that is, the minimum amount of communication required to achieve a certain task) using quantum states. One representative example is quantum fingerprinting, in which the simultaneous message passing model is considered and the minimum amount of communication could be exponentially smaller than the classical fingerprinting protocol. Experimental demonstrations based on a practical quantum fingerprinting protocol where coherent states are used to construct the fingerprints, have successfully shown the superiority of quantum fingerprinting. However, as a consequence of using coherent states, the communication time in this coherent quantum fingerprinting (CQF) protocol is increased. Moreover, the minimum amount of information communicated in these experimental demonstrations is largely limited by the dark counts of the single photon detectors. Here, we propose to enhance the performance of the existing CQF protocol through applying wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and simultaneous detection of multiple wavelength channels. We show that the new WDM-CQF protocol can potentially reduce the communication time significantly. More importantly, with the same experimental parameters, the amount of communication is much reduced in the new scheme compared with the original CQF protocol. The more wavelength channels are used, the less communication is required by WDM-CQF protocol. We also perform a proof-of-concept experimental demonstration of the new WDM-CQF protocol with 6 wavelength channels. The experimental results further validate that the new scheme with WDM not only beats the classical protocol, but also reduces the amount of communication required by the original CQF protocol by more than half. This paper proposes a system, by which humanoid robots could imitate human movements to learn human behaviors. Considering the security problem during humanoid robot imitation process, a method of stability identification based on improved Multi-Layer Perception (MLP) is proposed. Firstly, the positions of the human joints are collected by a Kinect. Secondly, the human joints information is transformed into robot angles information by the inverse kinematics equation. Finally, the stability of the robot is identified by the deep neural network, which has the robot angles as its input. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate that compared with the Back Propagation neural network (BPnn), RBF neural network (RBFnn), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), MLP neural network has the best identification accuracy. And the filters we used can overcome the problem of speed pulse, to some extent, and achieved an ideal imitation result.

Towards a reliable approach on scaling in data acquisition

Data acquisition is an important process in the functioning of any control system. Usually, the acquired signal is analogic, representing a continuous physical measure, and it should be processed in a digital system based on an analog to digital converter (ADC) and a microcontroller. The ADC provides the converted value in ADC units, but the system and its operator need the value expressed in physical units. In this paper we propose a novel design solution for the scaling module, which is a key component of a digital measurement system. The scaling module refers to fitting the sensor result of a variable number of bits depending on the ADC resolution into physical units. A general method for scaling is proposed and a SageMath script is presented for obtaining easily the scaling function. In the last part of the paper, the proposed method is validated in a case study, by calculus, and it is implemented on a low-cost development system in order to create a wireless sensor node. This special session paper introduces the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project, which targets the development of secure and energy-efficient RISC-V interfaced neuromorphic accelerators using augmented silicon photonics technology. Our approach aims to develop an augmented silicon photonics platform, an FPGA-powered RISC-V-connected computing platform, and a complete simulation platform to demonstrate the neuromorphic accelerator capabilities. In particular, their main advantages and limitations will be addressed concerning the underpinning technology for each platform. Then, we will discuss three targeted use cases for edge-computing applications: Global National Satellite System (GNSS) anti-jamming, autonomous driving, and anomaly detection in edge devices. Finally, we will address the reliability and security aspects of the stand-alone accelerator implementation and the project use cases. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In densely populated countries, medical facilities are not much available in country-side areas. If it is about animal health, it is rare to get a good cure. The owner has to take the animal to the Vet and will have to do it every time if he is living in remote places. Most countries in South Asia have this situation where animal husbandry is a common source of earning bread. Many times either the animal is not getting cure on time or diseases are detected at a later stage which harms them most. This paper describes a cellular communication based mobile system which can be used to monitor the health of animals in the remote country-side area. Also, the owner can get a prescription from the doctor and cure animals according to doctor’s advice. The developed system uses client-server model and can work for multiple patients who are connected with the same doctor. The Vet can access this system on his PDA or desktop using a web application. © 2018, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Injecting auxiliary random noise is an effective approach to implementing the online secondary-path modeling (SPM) subsystem in active noise control (ANC). In this paper, a typical FIR-based narrowband ANC (NANC) system with online SPM is proposed to reduce the sinusoidal noise generated by rotating machines, especially its lower frequency portion. A first-order FIR filter or magnitude/phase adjuster (MPA) serves as a sub-controller in each frequency channel. The contributions of this work are twofold. A bandpass filter bank based on IIR notch filters is introduced to mitigate the coupling between the controller (MPAs) and the SPM subsystem, which significantly improves the performance of the overall system. Furthermore, the proposed system requires only one x-filtering block regardless of the number of targeted frequencies, which considerably reduces the computational cost of the system. Simulations as well as application to real noise are conducted to demonstrate that the proposed system is superior to its conventional version in terms of overall system convergence and online SPM quality. © 25th International Congress on Sound and Vibration 2018, ICSV 2018: Hiroshima Calling. Thanks to the exponential growth of the Internet, Distance Education is becoming more and more strategic in many fields of daily life. Its main advantage is that students can learn through appropriate web platforms that allow them to take advantage of multimedia and interactive teaching materials, without constraints neither of time nor of space. Today, in fact, the Internet offers many platforms suitable for this purpose, such as Moodle, ATutor and others. Coursera is another example of a platform that offers different courses to thousands of enrolled students. This approach to learning is, however, posing new problems such as that of the assessment of the learning status of the learner in the case where there were thousands of students following a course, as is in Massive On-line Courses (MOOC). The Peer Assessment can therefore be a solution to this problem: evaluation takes place between peers, creating a dynamic in the community of learners that evolves autonomously. In this article, we present a first step towards this direction through a peer assessment mechanism led by the teacher who intervenes by evaluating a very small part of the students. Through a mechanism based on machine learning, and in particular on a modified form of K-NN, given the teacher’s grades, the system should converge towards an evaluation that is as similar as possible to the one that the teacher would have given. The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans.

Systems are often controlled using feedback loops. Fault diagnosis schemes are usually designed assuming that there is no feedback loop. Therefore fault diagnosis methods need to accommodate for the feedback loop. One such method is active fault diagnosis based on a fault signature system. This method is derived using the YJBK parametrisation, named after Youla, Jabr, Bongiorno and Kucera. It uses the derived fault signature system to determine the detectability of possible faults in the system. Deriving the fault signature system requires knowledge about the controller. This paper demonstrates the possibility of estimating the detectability of faults in the fault signature system using a gap-metric. The gap-metric has the advantage of only requiring knowledge about the plant. By using the gap-metric it is possible to estimate the detectability of faults without using information about the controller. © 2018 IEEE.

It is a matter of fact that Europe is facing more and more crucial challenges regarding health and social care due to the demographic change and the current economic context. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has stressed this situation even further, thus highlighting the need for taking action. Active and Assisted Living (AAL) technologies come as a viable approach to help facing these challenges, thanks to the high potential they have in enabling remote care and support. Broadly speaking, AAL can be referred to as the use of innovative and advanced Information and Communication Technologies to create supportive, inclusive and empowering applications and environments that enable older, impaired or frail people to live independently and stay active longer in society. AAL capitalizes on the growing pervasiveness and effectiveness of sensing and computing facilities to supply the persons in need with smart assistance, by responding to their necessities of autonomy, independence, comfort, security and safety. The application scenarios addressed by AAL are complex, due to the inherent heterogeneity of the end-user population, their living arrangements, and their physical conditions or impairment. Despite aiming at diverse goals, AAL systems should share some common characteristics. They are designed to provide support in daily life in an invisible, unobtrusive and user-friendly manner. Moreover, they are conceived to be intelligent, to be able to learn and adapt to the requirements and requests of the assisted people, and to synchronise with their specific needs. Nevertheless, to ensure the uptake of AAL in society, potential users must be willing to use AAL applications and to integrate them in their daily environments and lives. In this respect, video- and audio-based AAL applications have several advantages, in terms of unobtrusiveness and information richness.
