Good user experience with interactive cloud-based multimedia applications, such as cloud gaming and cloud-based VR, requires low end-to-end latency and large amounts of downstream network bandwidth at the same time. In this paper, we present a foveated video streaming system for cloud gaming. The system adapts video stream quality by adjusting the encoding parameters on the fly to match the player’s gaze position. We conduct measurements with a prototype that we developed for a cloud gaming system in conjunction with eye tracker hardware. Evaluation results suggest that such foveated streaming can reduce bandwidth requirements by even more than 50% depending on parametrization of the foveated video coding and that it is feasible from the latency perspective. We present results arising from the problem of sweeping a mosquito-infested area with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with an electrified metal grid. This is related to the Traveling Salesman Problem, the Lawn Mower Problem and, most closely, Milling with Turn Cost. Planning a good trajectory can be reduced to considering penalty and budget variants of covering a grid graph with minimum turn cost. On the theoretical side, we show the solution of a problem from The Open Problems Project that had been open for more than 15 years, and hint at approximation algorithms. On the practical side, we describe an exact method based on Integer Programming that is able to compute provably optimal instances with over 500 pixels. While the opening of data has become a common practice for both governments and companies, many datasets are still not published since they might violate privacy regulations. The risk on privacy violations is a factor that often blocks the publication of data and results in a reserved attitude of governments and companies. Additionally, even published data, which might seem privacy compliant, can violate user privacy due to the leakage of real user identities. This paper proposes a privacy risk scoring model for open data architectures to analyse and reduce the risks associated with the opening of data. The key elements consist of a new set of open data attributes reflecting privacy risks versus benefits trades-offs. Further, these attributes are evaluated using a decision engine and a scoring matrix intro a privacy risk indicator (PRI) and a privacy risk mitigation measure (PRMM). Privacy Risk Indicator (PRI) represents the predicted value of privacy risks associated with opening such data and privacy risk mitigation measures represent the measurements need to be applied on the data to avoid the expected privacy risks. The model is exemplified through five real use cases concerning open datasets.

Cooperative automatic driving, or platooning, is a promising solution to improve traffic safety, while reducing congestion and pollution. The design of a control system for this application is a challenging, multi-disciplinary problem, as cooperation between vehicles is obtained through wireless communication. So far, control and network issues of platooning have been investigated separately. In this work we design a cooperative driving system from a joint network and control perspective, determining worst-case upper bounds on the safety distance subject to network losses, so the actual inter-vehicle gap can be tuned depending on vehicle or network performance. By means of simulation, we show that the system is very robust to packet losses and that the derived bounds are never violated. © 2017 IEEE.

This article shows a review of the state of the art in the agricultural automation under greenhouse through the use of robotics platforms as a source of solution to different problems that arise in the agricultural sector specially under controlled conditions;the writing is part of a wide review of the agricultural automation under greenhouse and a set of proposals that consider applications in various fields of research, autonomous localized irrigation, neural networks, automatic learning, monitoring and control systems among others. It is intended to determine the most recent advances in techniques for sowing, applications of chemical for sanitary control, fertilization, harvest, where robotics is used as a source to solve agricultural problems. The review includes consultation in well-known national and international journals, research carried out in centers and research groups or companies dedicated to implementation addressed to the agricultural sector, finally it is determined the solutions that can be implemented to propose new topics, research lines, development and technology transfer to the agricultural sector. © 2017 IEEE.

For patient well-being and also for cost efficiency, constantly improving the medical act is essential. All patients undergo a set of medical tests before going into surgery. In some cases, these tests have to be repeated in different hospitals due to the lack of a system that facilitates presenting and sharing patient's data. We present two e-Health solutions for hospitals and clinics in the medical data field. Our aim was to design and implement a unique system for medical data management. This system allows easy data transfer between medical facilities. It also improves the medical diagnostic and treatment process and it increases the quality of medical care. Also, it improves the communication between patients and physicians, decreases the duration and costs of hospitalization and improves the patient's quality of life. The second medical solution presented in this paper present the results of the medical tests directly to a screen in the operating room, further reducing the time a patient has to wait before going into surgery and also improving the medical act. Both medical solutions were tested in real-world scenarios with promising results.

In this paper, the recently proposed current-limiting droop (CLD) controller for grid-connected inverters is enhanced in order to comply with the Fault-Ride-Through (FRT) requirements set by the Grid Code under grid voltage sags. The proposed version of the CLD extends the operation of the original CLD by fully utilizing the power capacity of the inverter under grid faults. It is analytically proven that during a grid fault, the inverter current increases but never violates a given maximum value. Based on this property, an FRT algorithm is proposed and embedded into the proposed control design to support the voltage of the grid. In contrast to the existing FRT algorithms that change the desired values of both the real and reactive power, the proposed method maximizes only the reactive power to support the grid voltage and the real power automatically drops due to the inherent current-limiting property. Extensive simulations are presented to compare the proposed control approach with the original CLD under a faulty grid.

Hypersonic vehicles are characterized with strong nonlinearities, coupling effects and uncertainties as well as fast time-varying parameters, which impose great difficulty to the attitude control. This study proposes a unified scheme for all the Euler angles, angle of attack, and sideslip angle. First, three controllers based on active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) are designed for the Euler angles respectively, in which the external disturbances and the internal uncertainties can be estimated by the extended state observer (ESO) and compensated in real time actively. Then the geometric relations among the angles with different time scales are utilized to transform the commands of α and β into the commands of the pitch angle and the yaw angle. Next the stability-margin tester method is employed to tune the controller parameters, which guarantees the stability and robustness of the control system. 1000 nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate the good tracking performance and the robustness of the proposed control method. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. This paper introduces a novel approach for early recognition of human actions using 3D skeleton joints extracted from 3D dept. data. We propose a novel, frame-by-frame and real-time descriptor called Body-part Directional Velocity (BDV) calculated by considering the algebraic velocity produced by different body-parts. A real-time Hidden Markov Models algorithm with Gaussian Mixture Models state-output distributions is used to carry out the classification. We show that our method outperforms various state-of-the-art skeleton-based human action recognition approaches on MSRAction3D and Florence3D datasets. We also proved the suitability of our approach for early human action recognition by deducing the decision from a partial analysis of the sequence.

As a classical cell balancing solution in low-power supercapacitor applications, the switched resistor circuit is vulnerable to resistance deviation effects with existing cell balancing methods. In this paper, we propose a synchronized cell balancing method for switched resistor circuits based on the consensus theory and a cyber-physical approach, with the aim of synchronizing cell voltages before they are fully charged. It is shown that the proposed cell-balancing algorithm is robust to resistance deviation effects. Extensive simulations are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2017
