We introduce a novel distributed control architecture for disturbances attenuation in heterogeneous platoons of linear and time-invariant autonomous agents that inherits the performance achievable by the leader-follower control policies. We provide a Youla-like parameterization for the class of all distributed controllers such that the sparsity constraints are imposed on the controllers' left coprime factors, outlining a new concept of structural constraints in distributed control. The proposed scheme lends itself to optimal controller design via norm based costs, it guarantees string stability and completely eliminates the accordion effect from the behavior of the platoon. The distributed controller is proven to attain global optimality for heterogeneous platoons and H2 costs and can easily reconfigure such as to remain optimal during formation merging/exiting maneuvers. The scheme is amenable to a GPS time base synchronization mechanism, allowing for the exact compensation of the time delays induced by the wireless communications. © 2016 American automatic control Council (AACC).

In the Asymmetric Traveling Salesperson Problem (ATSP) the goal is to find a closed walk of minimum cost in a directed graph visiting every vertex. We consider the approximability of ATSP on topologically restricted graphs. It has been shown by Oveis Gharan and Saberi [13] that there exists polynomial-Time constant-factor approximations on planar graphs and more generally graphs of constant orientable genus. This result was extended to non-orientable genus by Erickson and Sidiropoulos [8]. We show that for any class of nearly-embeddable graphs, ATSP admits a polynomial-Time constant-factor approximation. More precisely, we show that for any fixed k κ 0, there exist α β > 0, such that ATSP on n-vertex k-nearly-embeddable graphs admits an-Approximation in time O(n). The class of k-nearly-embeddable graphs contains graphs with at most κ apices, κ vortices of width at most k, and an underlying surface of either orientable or non-orientable genus at most κ. Prior to our work, even the case of graphs with a single apex was open. Our algorithm combines tools from rounding the Held-Karp LP via thin trees with dynamic programming. We complement our upper bounds by showing that solving ATSP exactly on graphs of pathwidth κ (and hence on κ-nearly embeddable graphs) requires time nω(κ), assuming the Exponential-Time Hypothesis (ETH). This is surprising in light of the fact that both TSP on undirected graphs and Minimum Cost Hamiltonian Cycle on directed graphs are FPT parameterized by treewidth.

Systems and control are all around us. System view, understanding systems and how they are controlled is important for everyone. The behavior of systems is determined by some fundamental principles which can be understood by everyone. The main principles governing systems and control are presented on different levels. The first level is dedicated for everyone. Comics-like interpretation is provided with explanations. The second level discusses the main topics dedicated for the interested students. Several case studies demonstrate how system view is considered in different areas of life. With this approach systems in different areas of life could be better understood contributing to better decisions influencing their performance. The third level provides deeper insight into some aspects of modern mathematical system theory, to geometric view of control systems. The material is available on a website on the internet. © 2016

We employ recent control design algorithms for delay systems to address the mixed sensitivity design of a dynamic controller for multiple degree of freedom systems interconnected with an inverse signal shaper. A delay based inverse shaper is included within a feedback loop in order to eliminate oscillatory modes due to an attached flexible substructure, which has been shown to be advantageous to inducing directly the filtering property by an appropriate controller design. Due to the presence of the inverse shaper, the closed loop dynamics become infinite dimensional. Furthermore we design fixed-order controllers, aiming at an easy implementation. As a consequence of these two features standard techniques from H-infinity control can no longer be used. We present a two-stage method, which firstly makes the closed-loop system asymptotically stable and, secondly, computes a low-order controller that minimizes the H-infinity norm of the weighted closed-loop transfer functions. The approach is grounded in recent methods for fixed-order H-infinity control of delay systems, and the delay-differential algebraic equations (DDAE) modelling and control framework. © 2017

Nowadays, hypersonic flight vehicles are widely studied. Since their high nonlinearity, strong coupling and uncertain factors, the conventional three-channel independent control design method is often unable to work well. In this paper, an active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) is utilized to cancel internal uncertainties and exogenous disturbances for longitudinal dynamics. Then, the MIMO robust controller is obtained by choosing proper sensitivity functions and weighting functions to reduce horizontal-lateral direction coupling. The conventional H robust controllor is high-order, which is difficult for practitioners to implement. With frequency transformation, both ADRC for the longitudinal dynamics and MIMO robust controller for the horizontal-lateral dynamics are reformed into the static output feedback structure to reduce the high order of controller. Finally, all parameters in the controllers can be optimized by HIFOO (H-Infinity Fixed Order Optimization). The Winged-Cone, a 6-freedom NASA hypersonic vehicle model, is used as a benchmark, and Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The increasing E-tourism systems provide intelligent tour recommendation for tourists. In this sense, recommender system can make personalized suggestions and provide satisfied information associated with their tour cycle. Data mining is a proper tool that extracting potential information from large database for making strategic decisions. In the study, association rule analysis based on FP-growth algorithm is applied to find the association relationship among scenic spots in different cities as tour route recommendation. In order to figure out valuable rules, Kulczynski interestingness measure is adopted and imbalance ratio is computed. The proposed scheme was evaluated on Wangluzhe cultural tourism service network operation platform (WCTSNOP), where it could verify that it is able to quick recommend tour route and to rapidly enhance the recommendation quality. © Authors 2017. Resource management in nowadays agriculture imposes the use of new technological solutions for automation and energy efficiency and this paper concentrates on the control of internal temperature of a greenhouse using parabolic trough collectors (GHPTC) for internal heating. The actuator for the GHPTC control system is the conducting fluid pump that enables the liquid flow into the collector pipes. Both the nonlinear and linear models are presented in the paper in order to tune a classical controller. A comparison of controller performances (stationary and transient) was conducted by simulation, using Matlab/Simulink software. Also, the gradient descent method was applied for an optimal tuning of the temperature controller, imposing minimum overshoot.

In allocation problems, a given set of goods are assigned to agents in such a way that the social welfare is maximized, that is, the largest possible global worth is achieved. When goods are indivisible, it is possible to use money compensation to perform a fair allocation taking into account the actual contribution of all agents to the social welfare. Coalitional games provide a formal mathematical framework to model such problems, in particular the Shapley value is a solution concept widely used for assigning worths to agents in a fair way. Unfortunately, computing this value is a #P-hard problem, so that applying this good theoretical notion is often quite difficult in real-world problems. In this paper, we first review the application of the Shapley value to an allocation problem that models the evaluation of the Italian research structures with a procedure known as VQR. For large universities, the problem involves thousands of agents and goods (here, researchers and their research products). We then describe some useful properties that allow us to greatly simplify many such large instances. Moreover, we propose new algorithms for computing lower bounds and upper bounds of the Shapley value, which in some cases provide the exact result and that can be combined with approximation algorithms. The proposed techniques have been tested on large real-world instances of the VQR research evaluation problem.

We present complexity and numerical results for a new asynchronous parallel algorithmic method for the minimization of the sum of a smooth nonconvex function and a convex nonsmooth regularizer, subject to both convex and nonconvex constraints. The proposed method hinges on successive convex approximation techniques and a novel probabilistic model that captures key elements of modern computational architectures and asynchronous implementations in a more faithful way than state-of-the-art models. In the companion paper [3] we provided a detailed description on the probabilistic model and gave convergence results for a diminishing stepsize version of our method. Here, we provide theoretical complexity results for a fixed stepsize version of the method and report extensive numerical comparisons on both convex and nonconvex problems demonstrating the efficiency of our approach. The main objective of the work is to improve the clustering efficiency and performance when we deal with very big datasets. This paper aims to improve the quality of XML data clustering by exploiting more features extracted from source schemas. In particular, it proposes clustering approach that gathers both content and structure of XML documents to determine similarity between them. The content and structure information are concluded using two different similarity methods that are then grouped via weight factor to compute the overall document similarity. The structural similarity of XML data are derived from edge summaries while content features similarity are derived from aggregate of set of similarity measures;Jaccard, Cosine measure and Jensen-Shannon divergence in one algorithm. However, we also experimented using Jaccard distance as content measure with edge summaries to prove that using an aggregation of content similarity measures can further improve the results. The experiments prove that clustering of XML documents based on structure only information produce worse solution in homogenous environment, while in heterogeneous environment clustering of XML document produce better result when the structure and the content are combined. Results have shown that performance and quality of the proposed approach is better in comparison of both XEdge and XCLSC approaches. © 2016 IEEE.
