The primary objective is to investigate the applicability of spectral methods for designing feedback controllers for a closed loop system with an input shaper with time delays. The shaper is included in the feedback loop in order to pre-compensate low-damped oscillatory modes of a flexible subsystem. However, after inserting a shaper into the feedback loop, the closed loop dynamics becomes infinite dimensional. A robust controller design then requires guaranteeing that all the infinitely many poles of the closed loop system will safely be located in the left half of the complex plane. Besides, the closed loop dynamics need to be sufficiently fast in order to take over and keep filtering properties of the input shaper. For the spectral design of the controller, the recently developed spectral abscissa minimization approach for interconnected time delay systems is applied. The presented methods are tested on a case study simulation example, which is a multi-degree of freedom mechanical system. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents an interface system display which is conceived to improve pilot situation awareness with respect to a flight envelope protection system developed for a mid-sized transport aircraft. The new display is designed to complement existing cockpit displays, and to augment them with information that relates to both aircraft state and the control automation itself. In particular, the proposed display provides cues about the state of automation directly in terms of pilot control actions, in addition to flight parameters. The paper also describes a forthcoming evaluation test plan that is intended to validate the developed interface by assessing the relevance of the displayed information, as well as the adequacy of the display layout. © 2015, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc. The focus in this paper is on active fault diagnosis (AFD) in closed-loop sampleddata systems. Applying the same AFD architecture as for continuous-time systems does not directly result in the same set of closed-loop matrix transfer functions. For continuous-time systems, the LFT (linear fractional transformation) structure in the connection between the parametric faults and the matrix transfer function (also known as the fault signature matrix) applied for AFD is not directly preserved for sampled-data system. As a consequence of this, the AFD methods cannot directly be applied for sampled-data systems. Two methods are considered in this paper to handle the fault signature matrix for sampled-data systems such that standard AFD methods can be applied. The first method is based on a discretization of the system such that the LFT structure is preserved resulting in the same LFT structure in the fault signature matrix as obtained for continuous-time systems. This paper investigates the optimal charging strategy for a plug-in electric taxi (PET) to maximize its operating profit by choosing proper charging slots, subject to uncertain electricity prices and time-varying incomes. As PET consumes more electricity and possesses different charging behaviors from the widely studied private electric vehicles, this problem deserves special treatment. First, in order to tackle the uncertain electricity prices, a simple thresholding method is proposed to determine the optimal charging slot, where the thresholds are computed via a backward induction algorithm. Then, the properties that reveal the insights of the algorithm are presented. Then, several practical factors are included in algorithm design to approach a more realistic solution, such as an accurate battery model, the additional power consumption of driving PET to charging station, and the battery loss during charging and discharging processes. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is able to improve the profit and significantly reduce the expense.

While the benefits of exploiting Contextual Information (CI) are starting being recognized by the Information Fusion (IF) community [1], most current approaches for CI inclusion lead to stove-piped solutions that hardly scale or adapt to new input or situations. This paper makes a step in the direction of better CI exploitation by presenting some results of an international collaboration investigating the role of CI in IF and proposing an adaptive framework that dynamically takes into consideration CI to better support mission goals. In particular, we discuss some architecture concepts to be considered in the development of fusion systems including CI and we present how context can be dynamically exploited at different levels of a fusion engine. The concepts are illustrated in a maritime use-case.

Stable local feature and representation is a fundamental component of many image registration, 3D reconstruction and object recognition algorithms. SIFT is a good descriptor that encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the feature point’s neighborhood. This paper improved SIFT- based local image descriptor and proposed a SIFT feature matching algorithm based on improved 2DPCA which can eliminate both rows and columns of relevance. Experimental results show that improved 2DPCA-SIFT algorithm is relatively stable, accurate and fast. © 2015 SERSC.

Superresolution image reconstruction technique uses single or a series of low-resolution images to reconstruct a high resolution image without changing the hardware devices, while improving image quality and the spatial resolution of the image. High resolution means the image with a higher pixel density, can provide more details. In this paper, a novel image superresolution algorithm based on sparse representation is studied. During over-complete dictionary of the training phase, the proposed method improves two aspects including feature extraction and dimension reduction. In the feature extraction process, combining the second derivative with the gradient direction, we construct a new descent direction to improve gradient method. The convergence speed of the new algorithm is faster than the gradient method and can get better results. Then improved two-dimensional Principal Component Analysis (2DPCA) algorithm is used to reduce the dimension, it could eliminate the correlation of the image lines and column. Experiment results show that this method of image reconstruction is better and faster for high resolution image reconstruction. © 2015 SERSC.

Demand response (DR) is a crucial and necessary aspect of the smart grid, particularly when considering the optimization of both, power consumption and generation. While many benefits of DR are currently under study, an issue of particular concern is optimizing end-users' power consumption profiles at various levels. This study proposes a fundamental, game theoretic software framework for DR simulation that is capable of investigating the effect of optimizing multiple electric appliances by utilizing game theoretic algorithms. Initial results show that by shifting the switch-on time of three household appliances provides a savings of up to 6%.

Web Laboratories (WebLabs) are essential resources for engineering education. Within this type of laboratory, a new Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) package design model is shown in this work. The proposed model is based on a set of resources that form a complete educational structure;taking into account the sequencing and navigation among the elements that compose it. In addition, it can be uploaded to a Learning Management System (LMS), offering to the students an effective tool to work with web labs. The package is structured in 4 sections or pages: Introduction, Theory, Virtual/Remote Laboratory (VRL) and Assessment;where the last performs an automated verification of the work done by the learner. In this way, one of the advantage of this methodology is that the instant results of the assessments, performed by the SCORM package, is stored in the inner LMS. Some WebLabs performing this methodology are being developed in the University of Jaén. In this work, an example is developed: 'Modelling of Dynamic System: DC Motor'. This WebLab is used in the Industrial Automation course that is included in several Industrial Engineering degrees. © 2014 IEEE.

Human detection is a key problem in computer vision, with several applications that have the potential to positively impact quality of life. In recent years, the number of approaches to detect human in video sequences has grown steadily. This paper proposed a novel approach to improve the capability of human detection. After investigating the image texture analysis methods, we adopt the new good texture descriptor, Local Binary Pattern histogram Fourier (LBPHF). Then we combine the LBPHF with the Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) as feature sets, and use linear SVM to train our classifier. In the experiment on the INRIA personal dataset which is well known relatively good human detection's dataset, it is shown that our detector combining with the LBPHF significantly outperforms the other methods. Moreover, the time cost is much less and the dimension is reduced.
