This paper shows how control techniques, such as PID or generalized predictive control, can improve the performance of TCP/IP networks when dealing with congestion. Drop tail, or more sophisticated AQM techniques such as RED, perform worse than process control techniques. A comparison between the different methods in different working scenarios is analyzed. Two different GPC controllers are evaluated. One considers the model resulting from on-line identification and the other is the linearization of the non-linear model. © 2009 EUCA.

The aim of this paper is to present a method for estimation of parametric faults in closed-loop systems. The key technology applied in this paper is coprime factorization of both the dynamic system as well as the feedback controller. Using the Youla-Jabr-Bongiorno-Kucera (YJBK) parameterization, it is shown that a certain matrix transfer function, the fault signature matrix, is an LFT (linear fractional transformation) of the parametric faults. Further, for limit parametric faults, the fault signature matrix transfer function can be approximated with a linear matrix function of the parametric faults.

Peer-assessment can be used to evaluate the knowledge level achieved by learners, while exposing them to a significant leaning activity at the same time. Here we see an approach to semi-automatic grading of school works. It is based on peer-assessment of answers to open ended questions ('open answers'), supported by the teacher grading activity performed on a portion of the answers. The methodology we present is based on a representation of student model and answers through Bayesian networks. It supports grading in a six-values scale (the widely used 'A' to 'F' scale). The experiments we present test the possibility to model the fact that knowledge required to perform some work is preparatory to that required for a subsequent one. The experiments have been conducted using the web-based system OpenAnswer and were meant to collect datasets, to be exploited in order to evaluate the various algorithms, settings and termination conditions better to be applied in order to have a reliable set of grading out of the learners' peer-assessment process and the teacher's grading work (with the latter limited to a significantly limited percentage of the answers to be graded). © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper we build on previous work exploring a formal way to assess the composition of learning groups. We start from our existing framework, designed to provide support to personalization in e-learning environments, comprising an implementation of the Vygotskij Theory of proximal development. In such theory, effective individual learning achievements can be only obtained within the boundaries of a cognitive zone where the learner can proceed without frustration, though with support from teacher and peers. In this endeavor, the individual development cannot disregard social-collaborative educational activities. Previously we gave operative definitions of the Zone of Proximal Development for both single learners and groups;here we aim at assessing the viability of a partition of students in groups over a common task. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Hepatitis C is a major public health problem in the United States and worldwide. Outbreaks of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections associated with unsafe injection practices, drug diversion, and other exposures to blood are difficult to detect and investigate. Molecular analysis has been frequently used in the study of HCV outbreaks and transmission chains; helping identify a cluster of sequences as linked by transmission if their genetic distances are below a previously defined threshold. However, HCV exists as a population of numerous variants in each infected individual and it has been observed that minority variants in the source are often the ones responsible for transmission, a situation that precludes the use of a single sequence per individual because many such transmissions would be missed. The use of Next-Generation Sequencing immensely increases the sensitivity of transmission detection but brings a considerable computational challenge because all sequences need to be compared among all pairs of samples. For instance, our relatively small dataset of 401 samples, a total of 80200 pairwise sample comparisons must be performed, which account for 4.56 x 1010 pairwise sequence comparisons. We present a fast and efficient three-step filtering strategy that removes 85.1% of all the pairwise sample comparisons and 91.0% of all pairwise sequence comparisons, accurately establishing which pairs of HCV samples are below the relatedness threshold This electronic document is a “live” template and already defines the components of your paper [title, text, heads, etc.] in its style sheet.

Over the last decades, atomic force microscopy (AFM) became one of the most important measuring instruments in various disciplines covering life science, biology, material science, semiconductor industries, and micro- and nanotechnology. Conventional AFM scanning techniques are limited to a 2.5D image acquisition, resulting a simple 2D high-map of the surface. Due to the ongoing miniaturization in semiconductor and nanomanufacturing industries, measurements on the critical dimensions are of growing importance. Additionally, novel measurement tasks as the determination of linewidths or even sidewall roughness arise as need from nanometrology. Especially, the upcoming technology of nanooptics and photonics relies critically on powerful and ultra-precise characterization tools for complex surfaces on the sub-nanoscale. In order to produce suitable optical waveguides and building-blocks, all surface roughness and surface impurities have to be minimized, since the result in severe light diffusion and diffraction. Conventional AFM probes are suitable for 2.5D image acquisitions only and don't allow a correct scanning of complex structures. The pyramidal tip of standard probes cannot scan high aspect ratio structures, which leads to a distorted AFM image and to incorrect trench width and height. Furthermore, a standard tip is not able to contact surfaces with tilt-angles larger than the pyramid's side-angle. In general, this makes sidewall scans impossible at all. To overcome these problems, a novel method for performing sidewall measurements is proposed, based on standard AFM equipment in combination with customized FIB-milled AFM tips. Standard AFM environment is improved with an additional control loop incorporating the torsion of the cantilever as feedback to control the lateral position of the AFM tip. © 2014 IEEE.

In polytopic model based controller synthesis, the vertices of the model determine the achievable performance. This paper demonstrates a complete and tractable design process exposing the polytopic qLPV model generation and a polytopeshaping technique through the example of the TORA (Translational Oscillator with a Rotational Actuator) system. The demonstrated apparatus allows for systematically improving the control performance through the manipulation of the polytopic structure based on the MVSA (Minimal Volume Simplex Analysis) algorithm. The proposed approach fits to the framework of TP Model Transformation.

The last six years has seen Moore's Law continue to produce incredible gains in computational power. Indeed, the November, 2007 list of the top ten fastest supercomputers in the world contained no machines with acceleration of any kind. The same list six years later has four of the ten fastest supercomputers using accelerators, including the top two machines [3] . And the ten greenest supercomputers in November 2013 are using NVIDIA GPUs [1]. This heterogeneity of processing units is present from the top of the computational power spectrum down to the bottom, where GPU hardware coupled with novel CUDA and OpenCL programming paradigms have brought significant performance gains to consumer-grade applications. Under the conceptual framework of Cognitive Info communications, a recently published definition of Cognitive control draws twofold sense characterizing the goals of this branch of systems and control science. On the one hand, Cognitive control aims to apply the results of control theory to regulate natural or artificial cognitive systems. While on the other hand it points toward the modeling of cognitive processes of different levels utilizing the apparatus of the modern systems theory. Focusing on that view, this paper discusses a systematic way of deriving the convex polytopic qLPV model of nonlinear dynamic processes of the human organism based on the Tensor Product (TP) Model Transformation. To support the idea, a concrete modeling example of Insulin-Glucose Dynamics in intensive insulin therapy is presented.
