The last six years has seen Moore's Law continue to produce incredible gains in computational power. Indeed, the November, 2007 list of the top ten fastest supercomputers in the world contained no machines with acceleration of any kind. The same list six years later has four of the ten fastest supercomputers using accelerators, including the top two machines [3] . And the ten greenest supercomputers in November 2013 are using NVIDIA GPUs [1]. This heterogeneity of processing units is present from the top of the computational power spectrum down to the bottom, where GPU hardware coupled with novel CUDA and OpenCL programming paradigms have brought significant performance gains to consumer-grade applications. Under the conceptual framework of Cognitive Info communications, a recently published definition of Cognitive control draws twofold sense characterizing the goals of this branch of systems and control science. On the one hand, Cognitive control aims to apply the results of control theory to regulate natural or artificial cognitive systems. While on the other hand it points toward the modeling of cognitive processes of different levels utilizing the apparatus of the modern systems theory. Focusing on that view, this paper discusses a systematic way of deriving the convex polytopic qLPV model of nonlinear dynamic processes of the human organism based on the Tensor Product (TP) Model Transformation. To support the idea, a concrete modeling example of Insulin-Glucose Dynamics in intensive insulin therapy is presented.

This year we are celebrating the 12th International Conference, and the eighth edition in which its organization includes the participation of three academic departments at CINVESTAV: Electrical Engineering, computer science and automatic control. The conference remains as a specialized forum where local research groups can present their recent results and proposals, interact with each other, and have the opportunity to become aware of the recent research and developments from leading institutions abroad, too. Also, the interaction with technological industry managers and government officers, keeps a special place in the activities of the conference.

This paper addresses the fundamental problem of improving the Luenberger Observer (LO)-based feedback control so that it can deal with effectively a wide range of uncertainties, both internal and external. It is shown that the effect of such uncertainties can be estimated and cancelled in real time, all based on the yet untapped source of information: the estimation error in the existing LO. The result is quite significant in that, by augmenting the LO without changing its original structure or parameters, the LO-based design can be improved in terms of robustness and disturbance rejection. In other words, there is hidden information of uncertainties in the LO tracking error and it can be extracted, often with a mere integrator, to great benefits, as shown in both mathematical analysis and simulation studies.

In the field of nuclear engineering, national colleges have been carrying out important roles with about 10 % of graduates obtaining jobs in nuclear related companies. Although national colleges do not have special courses and classes for nuclear engineering, we have been trying to educate our students in cooperation with universities and industries through the activities of the Japan Nuclear Human Resource Development Network. With aide from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, science and Technology, we have been developing a short term curriculum for nuclear education consisting of lectures, experiments and facility tours. Moreover, we have developed a textbook for nuclear engineering basics and texts for experiments. In order to let the students understand the background of radiation, radiation dose measurements have been conducted by the students of more than 33 colleges. In the fiscal year of 2015, a new trial of remote lecture connecting 51 national colleges began. Through these education programs, we aim to help our students to understand radiation and nuclear engineering correctly, and to have their own opinions on this important matter.

This paper presents a vision-based fingertip writing digits detection and recognition system using a CMOS camera and FPGA implementation. It is a real-time signature detector, since the image process algorithms are all executed in Verilog code. The experimental results show that the system can successfully recognize fingertip-numeral-writing with a accuracy rate of 95.8%.

Today, innovation is a key word for many universities, as it constitutes an important part of most universities' public and scientific outreach task. Many universities are striving to increase the number of innovations generated at the university. A common method is to provide various support for research projects e.g.;providing researchers with information about international patent rights (IPR), offering administrative or financial help concerning patent applications, giving entrepreneurship and start-up support, etc. However, fostering innovators and entrepreneurs can start already in undergraduate/graduate courses, i.e. long before a student potentially reaches the research level. We believe that key factors for success in this matter are diversity and freedom. A course that strives to promote innovation capability must allow for students with different backgrounds and different curricula to meet and work together, and must allow for students to freely use their current knowledge within new contexts. This is generally not a setting provided in traditional undergraduate/graduate courses. This article describes the execution and outcome of an graduate course "international Market-Driven Engineering (iMDE)" in which diversity and freedom are key factors. The course is international and multi-disciplinary in terms of students, teachers and subjects. Graduate students with prior knowledge in automatic control constitute one important part of the course population. We believe that the diversity amongst the students, and their freedom when it comes to both innovation process and product, provides a promising platform in which seeds of ideas can grow into conceptual prototypes that build a solid foundation for full-scale innovations. On of the iMDE-projects, the Elderly Accessible Chair, or EA Chair, with its automated scanning and automatic seat-provider functionality, is one concrete example of this. © IFAC.

This paper proposes a solution for solving a specific problem that requires a team of identical robots to collect in a specific order different types of resources scattered throughout an environment. A Petri net with outputs models the environment, the team possible movements and the regions with resources. An iterative solution plans the team such that each robot collects and assembles resources in the required order. Each iteration step is based on a linear programming problem that is guaranteed to return a feasible firing vector for the Petri net system. A pseudocode description of the procedure is given and a simulation example is included.
