He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering from Kyoto university Japan in 1992 and 1994 respectively. From 1994 to 1998 he was a Research Associate in the Department of Information Technology Okayama University. Since April 1998 he has been a Research Associate in the Graduate School of Informatics Kyoto University. His current research interests include robust control and control system design via mathematical programming. Yutaka Yamamoto received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering from Kyoto University Kyoto Japan in 1972 and 1974 respectively and the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in mathematics from the University of Florida in 1976 and 1978 respectively. From 1978 to 1987 he was with Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics Kyoto University and from 1987 to 1997 with Department of Applied System Science. Since 1998 he is a professor at the current position. His current research interests include realization and robust control of distributed parameter systems learning control sampled-data systems and digital signal processing. Dr. Yamamoto is a receipient of the Sawaragi memorial paper award (1985) the Outstanding Paper Award of SICE (1987) Best Author Award of SICE (1990) the George Axelby Outstanding Paper Award of IEEE CSS in 1996 Takeda Paper Prize of SICE in 1997. He is a Fellow of IEEE. He was an associate editor of Automatica. He is currently an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control Systems and Control Letters and Mathematics of Control Signals and Systems. He is a member of the IEEE the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) and the Institute of Systems Control and Information Engineers.

This paper presents a design method of control systems such that a designer can flexibly take account of tradeoffs between evaluated uncertainty ranges and the level of control performance. The problem is reduced to a BMI problem and approximately solved by LMIs. The convergence of the proposed approximation is proved in a modified sense. A numerical example shows the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with the standard robust control.

Data Modeling is an essential first step for data preparation in any data mining procedure. Conventional entity-relational (E-R) data modeling is lossy, irreproducible, and time-consuming especially when dealing with unstructured image data associated with complex systems like the human brain. We propose a methodological framework for more objective E-R data modeling by eliminating the structured content-dependent metadata associated with the unstructured data. The proposed method is applied to epilepsy-related image data and a system called the human brain image database system (HBIDS) is developed accordingly. Supported with navigation, segmentation, data fusion, and feature extraction modules, HBIDS provides a content-based support environment (C-BASE). Such an environment potentially provides an unlimited (ad hoc) query support with a reproducible and efficient database schema. Switching between different modalities of data, while confining the feature extractors within the object(s) of interest, HBIDS yields anatomically specific query results. The price of such scheme is large storage requirements and relatively high computational cost. Examples of navigation through unstructured image data and content-based retrieval are presented in this paper. The results show the potential of HBIDS in content-based data management for decision support systems in real life medical applications. © 2007 IEEE.

One modified method of characteristics used to analyze the multiconductor transmission lines

To solve the coupling effect of multiconductor transmission lines excited by external electromagnetic wave, the modified method of characteristics is proposed. The modified method of characteristics which can compute the terminal induced voltages excited by the external electromagnetic wave when the terminal networks or intereonnection networks contain the dynamic elements is introduced. The simulation results indicate that the modified method can analyze the terminal induced voltages when the terminal networks or the interconnection networks contain the dynamic elements excited by the external electromagnetic wave. And the results are compared with the results acquired by FDTD method, the two results are completely same. So one effective modified method is implemented to compute the transmission lines.

Background subtraction is a widely used paradigm to detect moving objects in video taken from a static camera and is used for various important applications such as video surveillance, human motion analysis, etc. Various statistical approaches have been proposed for modeling a given scene background. However, there is no theoretical framework for choosing which features to use to model different regions of the scene background. In this paper we introduce a novel framework for feature selection for background modeling and subtraction. A boosting algorithm, namely RealBoost, is used to choose the best combination of features at each pixel. Given the probability estimates from a pool of features calculated by Kernel Density Estimate (KDE) over a certain time period, the algorithm selects the most useful ones to discriminate foreground objects from the scene background. The results show that the proposed framework successfully selects appropriate features for different parts of the image. © 2006 IEEE.

Flow-level traffic measurement is important for network management. The widely used centralized per-flow measurement faces a great challenge due to the demanding requirement on both memory bandwidth and memory size within a single traffic monitor. This paper addresses the issue of deploying a Distributed Passive Measurement System (DPMS) in a large scale network;specifically, we study how to optimally place traffic monitors and sample stochastic traffic flows, so that the probability of a packet being sampled (a.k.a. measurement coverage) is maximized. We formulate this problem as a Stochastic Chance Constrained Optimization (SCCO) problem;and we propose a Hybrid Intelligent (HI) algorithm to solve this problem. The HI algorithm consists of two major components, namely, uncertain function approximation and genetic algorithm. Equipped with the HI algorithm, we are able to address the optimal tradeoff between measurement coverage and deployment cost for networks with random traffic, which has not been studied before. Our simulations and experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm, i.e., a small deployment cost or a small number of monitors are sufficient to maintain a high level of measurement coverage. © 2006 IEEE.

The climate in modern livestock production buildings is controlled using a simple state controller. State controllers are typically not equipped to handle abnormal situations, e.g. sensors providing false or no readings, and they may therefore produce malformed climate control signals which may have severe consequences for the livestock. To make the system more robust, a sensor fusion system can be used to combine the different sensor readings and thereby produce a more reliable estimate of the climate state. A dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) model is constructed for this purpose. The model is tested in an online setup in a climate laboratory, where realtime behavior is archived by using the Boyen & Koller approximate inference algorithm. Preliminary experimental results show that the proposed model provides a promising framework for sensor fusion in livestock buildings. © 2006 IEEE.

An adaptive target queue length (ATQL) adjustment algorithm proposed in this paper cooperates with certain Active Queue Management (AQM) controllers to achieve more efficient buffer management for Internet congestion control. ATQL algorithm which estimates the average traffic load and dynamically adjusts the target queue length in dynamic traffic environment can be easily embedded into a series of AQM controllers. By engaging ATQL, AQM controllers are more suited to random and unpredictable traffic scenarios. Simulations are applied to validate ATQL's ability in assisting AQM controllers in sustaining stable drop probability, minimizing unnecessary packet loss, guaranteeing the link utility and maximizing the exploitation of buffer spaces.

This paper deals with the use of the Chebyshev-Padé approximation (CP) in order to achieve accurate direct discrete-time approximations to the fractional-order differentiator/integrator. It is shown how, for a given order of the transfer functions, CP is much more accurate at low frequencies than the continued fraction expansion (CFE). Furthermore, CP can be more accurate than a CFE approximation of a higher order.

Image fingerprints are related to cryptographic hash functions. In contrast to cryptographic hash functions this robust digest is sensitive only to perceptual change. Minor changes, which are not affecting the perception, do not result in a different fingerprint. In addition applied in authentication and tamper detection as traditional digital signatures, image fingerprinting technique is used in content-based retrieval, content-based monitoring, and content-based filtering. In this paper we present a slantlet transform based method for image fingerprints. The slantlet transform is a kind of orthogonal wavelet and performs better in data compression than discrete cosine transform and the other wavelets. Phase information is extracted from slantlet domain for image fingerprints. Better performance is verified in experiments evaluating robustness (e.g. against operations like lossy compression, scaling and cropping) and discriminability in comparison to an existing method.

Both the fractal dimension (FD). and the multifractal dimensions (MFD) have been widely used to describe natural textures in image processing community. However, due to the essential difference between the fractal reality of digital images and the mathematical fractal model, most FD/MFD estimation algorithms intrinsically produce less accurate results. In this paper, the idea of fractal signature is adopted and extended to the morphological multifractal estimation. As a result, a novel texture descriptor, namely the local morphological multifractal signatures (LMMS), is proposed to characterize the local scaling property of textured images. The LMMS depict the behavior of the morphological MFD over a wide range of spatial scales. The proposed LMMS feature, together with the fractal signature and the morphological MFD, has been applied to the discrimination of Brodatz textures. The comparison results demonstrate that our LMMS feature can differentiate natural textures more effectively. © 2006 IEEE.
