A smart home allows automated technology to control systems and appliances to assist daily life activities. In the current work, a prototype of a designed smart home health-aware system is presented. Three predefined ruled agents have been used to gather data, communicate between themselves, interpret the data based on several machine learning algorithms to predict abnormality for cardiac conditions. The paper also compares results obtained by running five machine learning algorithms. The agents function in accordance with predefined dataset describing residents ’ age, gender, height, weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels, smoking and alcohol consumption habits, and lastly, physical activity. Our plan is to simplify ubiquitous health monitoring for smart home’s residents. The proposed solution aims to monitor parametric measurements to alert health specialists in case of emergencies.

Paced-Curriculum Distillation with Prediction and Label Uncertainty for Image Segmentation

Purpose: In curriculum learning, the idea is to train on easier samples first and gradually increase the difficulty, while in self-paced learning, a pacing function defines the speed to adapt the training progress. While both methods heavily rely on the ability to score the difficulty of data samples, an optimal scoring function is still under exploration. Methodology: Distillation is a knowledge transfer approach where a teacher network guides a student network by feeding a sequence of random samples. We argue that guiding student networks with an efficient curriculum strategy can improve model generalization and robustness. For this purpose, we design an uncertainty-based paced curriculum learning in self-distillation for medical image segmentation. We fuse the prediction uncertainty and annotation boundary uncertainty to develop a novel paced-curriculum distillation (PCD). We utilize the teacher model to obtain prediction uncertainty and spatially varying label smoothing with Gaussian kernel to generate segmentation boundary uncertainty from the annotation. We also investigate the robustness of our method by applying various types and severity of image perturbation and corruption. Results: The proposed technique is validated on two medical datasets of breast ultrasound image segmentation and robotassisted surgical scene segmentation and achieved significantly better performance in terms of segmentation and robustness. Conclusion: P-CD improves the performance and obtains better generalization and robustness over the dataset shift. While curriculum learning requires extensive tuning of hyper-parameters for pacing function, the level of performance improvement suppresses this limitation. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. The relevance of the present research is related to the search for promising ideas for increasing the maximum slew rate of the output voltage ($\text{SR}_{\text{M}}$) of new-generation operational amplifiers (OpAmps). Proposed circuit techniques that provide (with simultaneous use) an increase in $\text{SR}_{\text{M}}$ by more than 2 orders of magnitude. Such high-speed operational amplifiers are in demand today for application in drivers of high-speed ADCs (AD9208, AD9691, etc.), and as active elements in circuits of analog-to-discrete filters on switched capacitors. It is proposed to introduce (according to the developed rules) a nonlinear differentiating RC-circuit realized based on an additional differential stage and a differentiating capacitor of small capacitance into the classical OpAmps with one integrating correction capacitance. Such circuit "additives" practically do not change the low-signal dynamic and static parameters of the OpAmp, and at a large signal during the transient front, when the input stage enters the nonlinear mode, form a large current overcharge of the integrating correction capacitor. Consequently, the $\text{SR}_{\text{M}}$ of the OpAmp is significantly increased.

Modeling trajectories in cigarette smoking prevalence, initiation and quitting for populations and subgroups of populations is important for policy planning and evaluation. This paper proposes an agent-based model (ABM) design for simulating the smoking behaviors of a population using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation - Behavior (COM-B) model. Capability, Opportunity and Motivation are modeled as latent composite attributes which are composed of observable factors associated with smoking behaviors. Three forms of the COM-B model are proposed to explain the transitions between smoking behaviors: initiating regular smoking uptake, making a quit attempt and quitting successfully. The ABM design follows object-oriented principles and extends an existing generic software architecture for mechanism-based modeling. The potential of the model to assess the impact of smoking policies is illustrated and discussed.

Implementing a Battery Management System (BMS) in Electric Vehicles (EVs) offers several benefits that enhance the efficiency, security, and durability of the vehicle's battery system. The BMS oversees and controls the performance of each cell in the battery pack, guaranteeing that they function within predetermined voltage and temperature thresholds to maintain safety. In this paper, an intelligent BMS for an EV model powered by a solar PV array was proposed using a fuzzy logic (FL) controller. The proposed method was applied to EVs consisting of four Lithium-ion batteries. The simulation results are achieved using MATLAB/Simulink software. The estimation of the state of charge (SOC) for each battery was used as input to the FL which controls the discharging/ charging mode for each battery via power semiconductor switches. Three different scenarios are used to verify the suggested method. A full control FL operation was obtained, and the batteries were protected successfully against overcharging and over-discharging.

Parallel Motion Execution and Path Rerouting for a Team of Mobile Robots

This work achieves parallel movements and collision free paths for a team of identical robots evolving in a known environment while satisfying a global Boolean-based formula over a set of regions of interest. The movement capabilities of the robots within the grid-based environment are modeled as a Petri net system. The solution starts from initially known robot paths given by the approach in (Mahulea et al., 2020b). The main advantages of this work are two-folded: (i) it reduces the number of waiting states of the robots throughout their paths, (ii) it considers path rerouting action solved by a MILP problem, without generating new observations along their paths. The rerouting is triggered when the number of robots that are waiting is greater than a threshold, or when some stopped robots inhibit the movement of others. Thus, the proposed method yields parallel movement of robots and path rerouting when needed. The algorithm is integrated in the open-source toolbox RMTool (González et al., 2015).

The purpose of this work is to analyze the capabilities of space-vector pulse-width modulation when controlling a 5-phase high-voltage cascade frequency converter in normal mode and several types of emergency situations. Taking into account the large number of controlled power transistors, an asynchronous modulation method is proposed, based on calculating the amplitude values of individual phases at each time based on the duty cycle of space vectors, which allows the control system to use independent switching in each phase. In emergency modes, when individual H-bridges are damaged, it is proposed to use the balanced space vectors method, which ensures the symmetry of the electromagnetic field in the event of a short circuit of both individual cascades and one or two phases of the inverter. Methodology. We use a mathematical and geometric interpretation of variable amplitude space vectors when projecting voltages onto a symmetrical 5-phase load. Results. Analysis of the 1st harmonic of phase voltages showed that the use of the space vector modulation method in the normal operating mode of a 5-phase converter makes it possible to increase the utilization factor of DC voltage sources by 23.1% (instead of 15.6% for a 3-phase converter). If individual H-bridges fail and the voltages in the load phases are balanced, the utilization factor may decrease, but in any case it will remain greater than 1. In this case, the higher harmonics, despite significant distortions in the shape of the phase voltages, are mutually compensated in the electromagnetic field of the load, as evidenced by absence of pulsations and shocks on the graphs of transient processes of the electromagnetic torque of the engine. Balancing of the electromagnetic field in the load is maintained even if one or two phases of the inverter are short-circuited. This significantly increases the survivability of the electric drive, which is especially important in critical mechanisms and technological processes,

With neural networks being used to control safety-critical systems, they increasingly have to be both accurate (in the sense of matching inputs to outputs) and robust. However, these two properties are often at odds with each other and a trade-off has to be navigated. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method to generate an approximation of a neural network which is certifiably more robust. Crucially, the method is fully convex and posed as a semi-definite programme. An application to robustifying model predictive control is used to demonstrate the results. The circuitry of a switched-capacitor low-pass filter (SCF) is considered, in which it is possible to tune the pole frequency without changing the capacitances of the switched capacitors, for example, by selecting them of the same kind. To study the suggested SCF circuit, the analysis in the time domain was used, and the obtained characteristics of the SCF were further compared with the characteristics of a generalized second-order analog filter. It is shown that the parameters implemented by the suggested filter depend not only on the capacitance values of the switched capacitors, but also on the ratio of the resistances of two additional resistors. Moreover, the SCF pole frequency is determined by the switching frequency of the keys, the ratios of the capacitances of the switched capacitors, as well as the ratio of the resistances of additional resistors. Due to the goal-oriented selection of the resistances of these resistors, it is possible to lower the SCF pole frequency at constant and identical values of the capacitances of the switched capacitors.

In this paper, a generalized likelihood ratio based detection algorithm with a statistical method for threshold setting is proposed to detect cyber-attacks on a unified remote control architecture. Based on an encoder and a decoder embedded on plant side and remote controller side, respectively, not only additive interrupted signal (only effecting output or input signal), but also multiplicative attack signal could be detected easily. Finally, three numerical examples are provided to validate our proposed scheme.
