Integrating digital data and human sensory input in real-world settings offers new possibilities in device diagnostics and maintenance. In this study, we utilized the EcoStruxure Augmented Operator Advisor to develop an augmented reality application for a family house heating system. Our application was designed without access to the real heating system; instead, we simulated its operation with a programmable logic controller. Our final application includes three primary scenes: the heat pump, its indoor unit, and the engine room. Drawing on our practical experience, we discuss the benefits of our approach and the software tools used and summarize our subjective opinions.

Industrial Ethernet networks are well-established communication systems in industrial production facilities. They are used in particular in applications with high demands on real-time capability and transmission reliability. In the context of applications with mobility requirements, such as mobile robots or rotating machine parts, however, they reach their practicable limits. In these cases, wireless communication systems are necessary. In addition to enabling the aforementioned applications, they promise further advantages, such as cost savings through simplified installation. However, the same requirements are placed on wireless systems as on their wired counterparts. This paper structures these requirements' implications on industrial communication systems by deriving four mandatory properties that need to be fulfilled by any communication system for industrial applications. Current commercially available technologies are reviewed with respect to the mandatory properties. Addressing their shortcomings, an overview of current research approaches aiming to improve industrial wireless systems in the automation applications is given. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a project to teach in a practical way several key factors of the Industry 4.0 technologies for electrical engineering students and teachers. The key factors are cibersecurity in industrial networks, industrial SCADA protocols and remote maintenance. Remote access to industrial networks is one of the contributions that Industry 4.0 has popularized because it makes industrial networks reachable using the public Internet. Remote maintenance is one of the great beneficiaries of this functionality. However, this access increases the security risks because a new and important vulnerability is opened by the access possibility from any computer connected to the Internet. To address this challenge, engineering students have to deal with industrial protocols topics, cibersecurity topics and control topics. This work presents an educational project to actively implement an atractive solution for remote access in industrial networks using open-source solutions. The selected open source solutions are the industrial telemetry protocol MQTT in the exchange of access control commands between the involved devices, the openvpn and ssh as a well-known VPN open-source product used for the remote access itself, the NodeRED platform as control dashboard and the IEC62443 industrial cybersecurity standard in order to monitor and audit the effectiveness of the project.

The purpose of this work is to implement a computing platform based on programmable controllers integrated into the Internet of Things (IoT), which are designed for forest fire-fighting monitoring. To calculate the fire hazard assessment, a hierarchical fuzzy inference system (HFIS) has been implemented, which aggregates a set of input parameters characterizing the state of a forest area into a single assessment. When forming this assessment, parameters are taken into account that characterize the state of the climate, the presence of dry trees, the characteristics of the state of combustible materials located on the surface of the earth, as well as the state of peat. The implementation of the computing platform is carried out using a set of Arduino controllers. To test the functionality of the proposed computing complex, its model was implemented in the TinkerCAD simulation environment. Also, using the Python programming language, a similar HFIS was implemented in the form of an independent model. As a result of comparing these two computing complexes, it has been shown that they generate similar results. This fact confirms the possibility of using several Arduino controllers to implement a computing platform based on a HFIS. The proposed provisions are aimed at expanding the IoT networks to build monitoring systems for forests and other natural areas. © 2024 IEEE.

Faulty meters, billing inaccuracies and fraudulent activity all contribute to the non-technical losses experienced by power utilities. Apart from the intended advantage of billing efficiency, the advent of smart meters for consumption and load profile logging, has made possible the analysis of subscriber data for load balancing and consumer classification, amongst other uses. This study analyses data from smart meters in Malta and develops a method for anomaly detection aiming to identify costumers contributing to non-technical losses. Consumers are grouped into clusters with similar weekly consumption patterns using hierarchical clustering. For each consumer, two novel coefficients are then computed: the Anomaly Coefficient, which measures the divergence in consumption patterns for a consumer from all other member of the same cluster, and the Cluster Change Coefficient, which quantifies the likelihood of a customer to exhibit patterns associated with other clusters. Together these two measures are joined in a single Anomaly Score, thus identifying consumers with highly irregular consumption patterns.

Energy management system (EMS) is important for the planning and operation of power system as the power generation must supply enough energy for load with the minimum operating cost. This paper presents nonlinear MPC to dispatch power generation within the limitation of the power system. The objectives are to improve EMS by considering AC optimal power flow and provide a dispatch strategy to reduce total operating cost (TOC). To realize the proposed nonlinear MPC, we consider the power plant model of Mae Hong Son in the northern part of Thailand. Load data and power generation profile are utilized as the inputs to MPC of EMS to minimize TOC for one day ahead. In this work, the optimal power flow is incorporated as the second order cone constraints. It is shown that EMS with optimal power flow can operate within the rated voltage for all buses. When comparing the results in normal mode with one-shot optimization, the proposed MPC can reduce the TOC by 1.72% in the rainy season. © 2021 IEEE.

In this study a third-order electrical analogue of the cardiovascular system (CVS) is presented, where pressures, volumes and flows are represented by voltages, charges and currents, respectively. The left atrium and the elastic arteries and veins are modeled as capacitive elements (reservoirs) with constant compliance (C) while the left ventricle is modeled as a capacitive element with variable elastance (e = 1/C), and vascular resistances are modeled as resistive (R) elements. The circuit is simplified by lumping together systemic arteries, arterioles and capillaries in the aortic;systemic veins and capillaries, right atrium and ventricle, and pulmonary arteries in the venous;and pulmonary capillaries and veins into the left atrial compartments. The state variables are chosen as the pressures of the left atrium, left ventricle and aorta. Although the model does not include major physiological feedback mechanisms such as neuro-hormonal pathways or the coronary arterial system, cardiac hemodynamics are simulated with high accuracy. This model is intended to be taken as the template for a bench-top physical platform to test the pre-clinical performance of novel Left Ventricular Assist Devices placed parallel to the LV and AO in future studies. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper presents a control system for un-manned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that track deformable objects. Using Event-Triggered (ET) principles and Image Moments-Based Nonlinear Model Predictive control (NMPC), the suggested approach improves flexibility by triggering control changes in response to specific occurrences. The incorporation of Barrier Functions (BFs) enforces safety requirements, which are critical for negotiating uncertain terrains. The framework's implementation and testing on a UAV tracking deformable coastlines are intended to demonstrate its effectiveness in adapting to dynamic situations while adhering to safety limitations. © 2024 IEEE.

Currently, a cloud-edge collaborative system combines almost unlimited storage and computing resources where tasks can be migrated to high-performance servers in edge servers or the cloud. However, resource allocation and task offloading present big challenges due to the competition among mobile devices (MDs) for communication and computing resources of edge servers. Therefore, it is significant to properly offload MDs' tasks to edge servers or the cloud. This work proposes a collaborative edge-cloud architecture, including a centralized cloud, edge servers, and MDs. Then, this work jointly considers computing power, task sizes, computing resources, transmission power of MDs, transmission rates, computing power, transmission power, computing resource of edge servers, and computing resource of the cloud. Considering the abovementioned factors, this work designs a mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. To solve it, a Genetic Simulated annealing-based Particle Swarm Optimization (GSPSO) algorithm is proposed to obtain the best solution. Building upon it, this work proposes an energy-minimized task offloading and resource allocation strategy, thereby minimizing the system's energy consumption while ensuring strict task response time limits. Experimental results show that GSPSO reduces the system's energy by 66.34%, 34.65%, and 4.95% more than particle swarm optimization (PSO), self-adaptive PSO, and Tyrannosaurus optimization. © 2024 IEEE.
