This paper deals with simultaneous control of acceleration transmission, wheel load fluctuation, suspension deflection and sprung mass displacement. The control theory is based on the robust H/sub /spl infin// control theory with the consideration of the modeling errors lumped into an unstructured uncertainty acting on the unperturbed plant. The design method is new and powerful for electronic car suspension's controlsystems, as it presents a new approach to the designers for the computation of a controller maintaining robust stability while guaranteeing the performance in a wide frequency range, even in the case of the controller is applied to the actual plant. Additionally, the paper emphasizes that the assumptions in the modeling step may lead to unrealistic control designs and, as an example, the effect of the rigidity assumption on the behavior of the open loop system is discussed.

The multi-carrier (MC) technique is attractive in indoor radio communication systems. It combats frequency selectivity of the channel as well as providing spectral efficiency. In this paper performance of the multi-carrier system with BPSK modulation is evaluated over the empirical data base of 12000 impulse response estimates of indoor radio propagation channels at two dissimilar office buildings. These indoor channels have lognormal amplitude fading and modified Poisson distribution of arrival time of multipath components. Performance is evaluated in terms of the average probability of bit error as a function of signal-to-noise ratio. The influence of changing the number of tones as well as the guard interval on the average bit error rate is investigated. Degradation of the performance caused by carrier phase error is studied. Results can be used in the design and assessment of indoor wireless communication systems.

Square-rod shaped poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogel containing poly (acrylic acid) with two platinum wire electrodes in its body was prepared and its characteristics were examined. Upon application of direct current to the electrodes in NaOH aqueous solution, the gel bent due to shrinkage of the gel around the anode. At this time, the bending rate and deflection were dependent on both the applied Voltage and the concentration of NaOHaq. Reversing the polarity, the hydrogel which had bent showed stretching. The gel was able to repeat the cycle of bending and stretching as the polarity was alternated. This hydrogel with electrodes has a simpler structure than does the bimetal system, Strong and flexible hydrogels can be obtained by a simple process of freezing-thawing a mixture of two kinds of poly-aqueous solutions, without any chemical reaction. Therefore, bending and stretching behavior is considered to be of wide application and was applied to a gripper system. It had the ability to continue gripping material in air as well as in NaOHaq.

A controller performance index developed by Desborough and Harris (1992) is proposed as a fault detection technique for the on-line monitoring of feedback controlsystems. An important theoretical advantage of this approach is that the performance index can distinguish between process variability due to external sources (e.g. load or setpoint changes) and variability due to a significant change in the feedback loop. The feasibility of the new approach is demonstrated via a simulation study for an air duct heating coil.

In this paper, a quick identification method based on the short time record of input-output data is introduced for joint state and parameter estimation of nonlinear continuous-time systems. The method can then be used for on-line monitoring the system with unknown parameters. An application way of the method to main-steam temperature control of a thermal power plant are developed in the framework of model reference adaptive control system (MRACS). Simulation studies on a super-heater model have been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Batch processes may constantly be changing, sometimes in unpredictable ways. For this reason, the operators need to keep a close watch on things. Batch-plant control stations have traditionally been located very close to the process, because operators can do a better job of sensing abnormalities if they can see, hear and smell what is going on. The reaction process can be considered as unstable, the instability being understood as the characteristic making the self abandoned system evolve towards unpermitted temperature values with the associated danger of accidents. The temperature also plays a decisive role in the final product quality, each time the reactor changes from the desired temperature the quality diminishes, the appearance of undesired species increases, and the overall performance of the reaction decreases which directly affects the economic performance.< >
