With the renewed emphasis in control theory on qualitative structural issues, as distinct from techniques of optimization, the last decade has brought significant growth in the application of geometric ideas to the formulation and solution of problems of controller synthesis. In this article we review the status of geometric state space theory as developed for application to systems that are linear, multivariable and time-invariant. After a brief summary of the underlying geometric concepts (( A , B )-invariant subspaces and ( A , B )-controllability subspaces) we outline two standard problems of feedback control that have been successfully attacked from this point of view, and briefly survey recent results in a range of other topic areas. Then we discuss certain issues of methodology, and conclude with some remarks on computational procedures.
A complete control system design study is described, starting with a non-linear mathematical model and finishing with the control hardware. The basic objective of the study was to design a controller which reduced the...

Rosenbrock's inverse Nyquist array design method for multivariable systems is used to determine controllers for the autostabilisation of a slender delta-winged aircraft. The inverse Nyquist array method is reviewed briefly and is applied to a linear model of an aircraft flying at a Mach number of 0.3, at sea level. The resulting multivariable compensators reduce the interaction between the aileron control and the sideslip angle and between the rudder control and the bank angle such that single-loop compensators can be designed to achieve satisfactory handling qualities at this flight condition.

The Bond Graph modelling technique developed by Paynter and extended by Karnopp and Rosenberg is introduced briefly and is illustrated by its application to the modelling of a prototype electro-mechanical tape-drive system. A set of state-space equations representing the system is readily determined from the Bond Graph model, and frequency and time response measurements made on the model correlate well with those of the physical system. The effect of parameter variations and different models for the component parts were readily examined using this approach.
The utilization of different numerical integration formulas for on-line continuous Kalman filtering is investigated for nonlinear systems. Variational and extended versions of the Kalman filter are compared on the bas...

This report summarizes the main features of the round table discussion on "Fuzzy Automata and Decision Pro¬cesses" which took place during the 6th Triennial IFAC World Congress at MIT in Boston in the late summer of 1975. The meeting was organized by Professor M. M. Gupta following the resounding success of an earlier round table, which he had organized on the same topic and re¬ported in Automatica (22). It was one of the more popular round table sessions held during the Congress and was attended by nearly 50 people. Contributions were offered by 14 authors. Those of whom were able to attend the session brought with them copies of full papers which were distributed to all participants. Because of the large number of contributions each author was asked to give only a brief account of his work, leaving Professor Zadeh to make a larger introductory presenta¬tion. Some very interesting points were made during the discussion that followed the formal presentation. This report gives a shortened account of what was said at the session. The list, including addresses of all the authors present and most of the other participants is given in Section 5. The list of references at the end of this report has been formed by putting together all the key references in the full length papers submitted by the authors.
The optimal control problem for sampled-data processes in which sampling is not triggered by a timer, but occurs when one or more outputs attain preset threshold valms is formulated as an adaptive optimal sampled-data...

This open access book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed Software Evolution” priority program 1593, which was launched by the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)”) to develop new approaches to software engineering with a specific focus on long-lived software systems. The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process.;Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. The second part of the book consists of the main chapters on knowledge carrying software, and cover tacit knowledge in software evolution, continuous design decision support, model-based round-trip engineering for software product lines, performance analysis strategies, maintaining security in software evolution, learning from evolution for evolution, and formal verification of evolutionary changes. In turn, the last part of the book presents key findings and spin-offs. The individual chapters there describe various case studies, along with their benefits, deliverables and the respective lessons learned. An overview of future research topics rounds out the coverage.;The book was mainly written for scientific researchers and advanced professionals with an academic background. They will benefit from its comprehensive treatment of various topics related to problems that are now gaining in importance, given the higher costs for maintenance and evolution in comparison to the initial development, and the fact that today, most software is not developed from scratch, but as part of a c
