Microalgae are attractive in wastewater treatment applications due to their capacity of growing on inorganic nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus salts) while their biomass is used to produce biodiesel, biogas or even bioethanol. The photosynthetic growth is the most attractive mechanism, but it brings additional limitation to the open ponds or the Photobioreactors (PBRs) in which they grow. The light is thus the main factor that drives the growth of microalgae and, with the development of commercial efficient LED light sources, the indoor cultures can become more efficient. The use of artificial light creates a new class of controllers, the lumostas, by which the incident light intensity is manipulated. In this paper, an alternative proposal based on PID control acting on Biomass algae desired profile is proposed. It is seen that the generated manipulated incident light generates optimal profiles for he biomass yield on light ratio. Also, better, more efficient batches that the ones based on model prediction over all the batch are obtained. This is a preliminary result that is to be extended with biomass observers. Also, in future work, the tuning of the PID controller in a more automated way will be addressed. © 2023 IEEE.

Mathematical modeling in the study of dynamic processes in biomedicine is currently widely used. The use of mathematical statistics and formal logic methods in the analysis of complex biomedical processes is especially important for increasing the efficiency of biomedical research. Taking into account the established growth of the technical base of research, the development of new technologies and technical means for obtaining and processing statistical biomedical information, the use of mathematical modeling methods is a fairly promising direction in scientific and practical work. In this paper the authors studies the possibility of improving the quality of biomedical process modeling using the MATLAB software environment. The research was carried out on real statistical material obtained by the authors during a full-scale experiment to study the impact of a complex of external factors on patients. The results obtained in this work can be used in the implementation of scientific and applied research of biomedical processes. © 2024 IEEE.

Process mining has emerged as a powerful solution for analyzing production processes in the manufacturing sector, yet its integration with the Internet of Things (IoT) remains a challenge. Drawing from IoT ontologies and business process context models, we introduced a practical methodology for constructing event logs from industrially gathered IoT data. The study was conducted in a controlled laboratory environment to emulate a discrete production model through an industrial communication and database setup. Employing a systematic process mining framework encompassing data preparation, pre-processing, production process analysis, and interpretation steps, we used industrial controllers and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) tools to simulate a sauce production process. The generated data was analyzed using ProM software, fortified by visualization techniques such as the 'log as log skeleton' method, for enhancing process flow comprehension and pinpointing ways for optimization. The study results unveiled a systematic linear structure by employing the Alpha Miner method for process model construction. Notably, the analysis exposes extended duration in the production process, prompting further investigation and refinement. The resultant model provides valuable insights into the actual performance of the process and emphasizes the range of potential process scenarios, making it easier to pinpoint deviations from the ideal model. Through the demonstration of the IIoT data integration, the result significantly contributes to the growing enthusiasm for process-oriented methodologies within the manufacturing sector as well as providing an example approach to transform captured IoT data into event logs via contextualization. Furthermore, the study result provides the groundwork for future research and improvement endeavors to enhance manufacturing practices and outcomes. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper addresses the topic of modeling complex systems and introduces a new formal framework. It starts with an extensive overview on the context of complex systems, major research and application directions and general requirements in terms of modeling with an emphasis on the Cyber Physical systems paradigm. Afterwards, five key modeling formalisms which address various aspects of complex systems are presented. The formal contribution of this paper is ultimately introduced. The approach is based on integrating in a unified architecture multiple modeling formalisms that are dynamically re-configured inside a modeling environment. A particular implementation of the framework is further defined for integrating relational models, probabilities and numerical information. © 2021, Politechnica University of Bucharest. The share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix worldwide is gradually increasing. And even though they all have a highly variable nature, they can be forecasted statistically. The wind energy potential was investigated in this article in the Bulgarian Danube region, located between Ruse and Silistra. Two years of meteorological data, including the wind speed at 10 m height and the ambient temperature was used to estimate the average wind energy for each month of the year at three geographic locations - Ruse, Staro Selo (near Tutrakan), and Calarasi, Romania (near Silistra). The results showed that Staro Selo has the highest energy potential, reaching up to 0.75 kWh/day/m2 in February, followed by Calarasi with 0.38 kWh/day/m2. The city of Ruse showed the lowest wind potential with the highest average monthly value reaching only 0.0027 kWh/day/m2. The obtained results showed that the regions around Tutrakan and Silistra are appropriate for the application of micro wind turbines. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a visual servoing system for the task of tracking and grasping a moving target in 3D space. A multiple-cue feature visual tracking module combining known 3D CAD models of the object is used to extract the target pose in the RGB-D images. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is developed to further compensate for the delay of the system and estimate the object motion. A two-stage controller for the visual servo is proposed with the first part being able to control the gripper to track the target, while the second part is a pose based visual servo (PBVS) scheme for the grasping motion. Experiment results show that the presented system is able to perform real time tracking- grasping tasks to a moving target. © 2022 IEEE.

Signal-based fault detection, as an essential technology in many engineering and industrial applications, has received extensive attention. Nevertheless, in a real-world application setting, collecting samples for some specific types of faults may be time-consuming and damaging, implying that samples of unseen faults may be unavailable in the training step. Keeping this in mind, we present a new semantic space-based zero-shot learning (SSB-ZSL) method for fault detection. The implementation of the method comprises three phases: feature extraction, human-defined semantic space, and a feature embedding model to address this issue. To evaluate the proposed method, we carry out experiments on two real datasets: a vibration-based rolling element bearing dataset from Case Western Reserve University, and an acoustic-based air compressor fault dataset. The results are promising and significantly better than that given by the compared state-of-the-art methods, showing that the proposed method can effectively detect unseen types of faults in the absence of their samples. © 2022 IEEE.

Nowadays, voltage source converters are commonly used in renewable energy penetration and the smooth control of ac machines. Multiple strategies are followed in designing these converters. The primary purpose of the distinct design is to minimize the harmonic contents from the output waves of the converters and ensure maximum efficiency. In this paper, a three-phase bridge converter feeding a rectified dc input is interfaced with an RL load in the MATLAB/Simulink platform to compare the operational characteristics of these techniques. The total harmonic distortion is also analyzed in all these techniques to illustrate their performance in drive control. Moreover, the impact of varying dc-link voltage, load conditions, switching frequency and duty cycle on these techniques' operational char-acteristics and performances are investigated, primarily focusing on resulting harmonic contents evaluation. © 2023 IEEE.

In dynamic and unpredictable work environments such as manufacturing, logistics, and automated warehouses, achieving high-precision self-localization estimation for efficient object picking are critical challenges for mobile robots. Ensuring accuracy and adaptability is essential for their successful operation. This paper presents a new method that integrates RGB cameras with Contrastive Learning (CL) for self-localization estimation and advanced object picking for mobile manipulators. The effectiveness of the proposed method for location estimation in object picking is verified in indoor environments. © 2024 IEEE.

A framework for tightly integrated motion mode classification and state estimation in motion-constrained inertial navigation systems is presented. The framework uses a jump Markov model to describe the navigation system's motion mode and navigation state dynamics with a single model. A bank of Kalman filters is then used for joint inference of the navigation state and the motion mode. A method for learning unknown parameters in the jump Markov model, such as the motion mode transition probabilities, is also presented. The application of the proposed framework is illustrated via two examples. The first example is a foot-mounted navigation system that adapts its behavior to different gait speeds. The second example is a foot-mounted navigation system that detects when the user walks on flat ground and locks the vertical position estimate accordingly. Both examples show that the proposed framework provides significantly better position accuracy than a standard zero-velocity aided inertial navigation system. More importantly, the examples show that the proposed framework provides a theoretically well-grounded approach for developing new motion-constrained inertial navigation systems that can learn different motion patterns. © 2023 IEEE.
