Facial expression recognition is an important research domain in developing human-machine relations. This paper proposes a facial expression recognition system. This system is built using Constrained Local Models to fit the shapes on a face image and on Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to detect the face expressions. Two optimized PWM techniques for the overmodulation region of two-level inverter-fed ac drives are investigated from harmonic loss minimization point of view. The optimization is elaborated for the lowest loss-factor, which is proportional to the square of rms value of current harmonics. The loss-factors are computed for different switching numbers as the function of the motor fundamental voltage. It is shown that, respect to the motor heating and torque ripples, the acceptable drive condition can be guaranteed by relatively low value of inverter switching frequency up to 96-97% of maximal possible motor voltage. Furthermore, it is shown that, the so-called Three vector method, introduced in the paper, has considerably better performance in the lower part of the overmodulation region than the so-called Two vector method or the standard PWM techniques for the same number of switching. The theoretical results are verified by experimental tests.

The core idea of metamodel-based model construction is well established. However, there are different metamodeling approaches relying on various modeling structures and instantiation procedures. Although, in general, these approaches offer similar features, they are sometimes incompatible with each other. Therefore, a precise abstract definition of instantiation is needed. The paper describes an abstract modeling framework, which is easily customizable in order to adapt it to different multi-level modeling techniques. The framework consists of an abstract modeling structure, basic built-in constructs, and a dynamic instantiation procedure. The paper demonstrate the flexibility of the approach by a specific bootstrap that is explicitly designed for the rebalancing of the node-edge antagonism, which is mostly the origin of many reification patterns applied in current meta-model designs. Although the proposed solution to the node-edge dichotomy is only an example of our multi-level meta-modeling approach, it is per se a valuable achievement showing that it can be done in a more elegant manner than it is usually expressed in other state-of-the art modeling frameworks.

This paper proposes a set of evolving Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy models of the nonlinear dynamics specific to the azimuth and position of Multi Input-Multi Output (MIMO) twin rotor aerodynamic systems. Separate Multi Input-Single Output (MISO) fuzzy models of the azimuth and pitch positions are derived for this MIMO system. The rule bases and the parameters of the MISO TSK fuzzy models are evolved by an online identification algorithm (OIA) that belongs to the class of incremental OIAs, which implement adding mechanisms. The experimental results conducted on aerodynamic system laboratory equipment prove the performance of the TSK fuzzy models by good output responses and root mean square error values. A performance comparison with a set of MISO TSK fuzzy models evolved by another incremental OIA is included.

The paper presents the design and the implementation of two model predictive controllers (MPCs) for magnetic levitation systems. The presentation is focused on the position control of a sphere in a magnetic levitation system with two electromagnets laboratory equipment in order to test the proposed controllers. A state feedback control structure is first designed to stabilize the system. In order to ensure the zero steady-state control errors, the second controller is based on an MPC in the outer control loop. The autoregressive exogenous model corresponding to closed-loop state feedback control system is computed in order to develop the MPC. The simulation results are included to illustrate the performance of the position control systems.

Due to the continuous technological progress, life becomes more comfortable. The fact is also valid for robotized technological lines where workers have to command and control the movement of robots and robotic arms. In this context, the paper presents an alternative way of controlling a mechanical Rv-2AJ robot arm, applicable mainly for locally controlled robots. The main characteristics of the application are an ergonomic operating mode, video and tactile feedback control, low price; the application can have also a didactical purpose, and can offer a highly useable material for mechatronic laboratories for students teaching.
