This paper presents new strategies for offline traffic engineering, when designing multiservice-UMTS networks, based on an efficient modification of basic genetic optimization techniques. More specifically, the problem setup includes Mobile Internet access as the most emergent trade in the telecommunications industry due to the advancement of cellular smartphones, tablets, notebooks and netbooks based computing and communicating technologies. In this real world set-up, the integration of deployed wireless networks with the Internet and the transparent interworking among different wireless technologies, namely EDGE/GPRS/CDMA2000 cellular and Wireless LAN (WLAN), appears to be a demanding objective for mobile communications service providers. The mixture and convergence of mobile and fixed infrastructures related services make it urgent to tackle quality of service and traffic engineering for mobile networks at the fundamental transport level with regards to OSI network analysis. A good solution to address such issues is the Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology providing a fused control instrument with connectionless multiprotocol capabilities, functioning over different communication media while supporting traffic engineering and quality of service (QoS) offering smooth traffic over the complex network of mobile and fixed communication infrastructures. Therefore, the MPLS architecture offers the required capacity to integrate different services over wired and wireless infrastructures in a unified convergent approach. Based on these concepts, this research proposal investigates traffic engineering solutions in MPLS involved wireless cellular networks. In this paper, two new methods for the solution of the off-line Traffic engineering (TE) problem in multi-service wireless networks based on a certain efficient modification of basic genetic optimisation are presented. For enhancing image contrast, global histogram equalization uses the histogram information of the entire input image for designing its transformation function. However, such global approach is suitable for overall enhancement, and it fails to adapt with the local image brightness features. In this paper, we present an effective method for image contrast enhancement that combines local information and global information. In local enhancement, we get multiple intensity mapping functions from the recursive mean-separate histogram equalization method. According to intensity level, we map different transformation functions to the center sub-block and its neighboring sub-blocks. This method is combined with unsharp masking to enhance the local detail of the image. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents an unconventional structure of an motor with two stators and a unique rotor with radial air-gap. The fundamental idea behind the solution presented in this paper was to use the broadest possible parts (especially plates) from standard motors, with which, incidentally, can be made technico-economics comparisons. Originally we studied an asynchronous variant and later our attention was directed to a synchronous machines with permanent magnets placed on the both sides of the rotor.

The focus in this paper is on active fault diagnosis (AFD) in closed-loop sampleddata systems. Applying the same AFD architecture as for continuous-time systems does not directly result in the same set of closed-loop matrix transfer functions. For continuous-time systems, the LFT (linear fractional transformation) structure in the connection between the parametric faults and the matrix transfer function (also known as the fault signature matrix) applied for AFD is not directly preserved for sampled-data system. As a consequence of this, the AFD methods cannot directly be applied for sampled-data systems. Two methods are considered in this paper to handle the fault signature matrix for sampled-data systems such that standard AFD methods can be applied. The first method is based on a discretization of the system such that the LFT structure is preserved resulting in the same LFT structure in the fault signature matrix as obtained for continuous-time systems. The other method is an approximation method, where the same structure is obtained for small parametric faults. © 2015

This paper presents a new filtering method for the discrete-time delay control (DTDC) method. The DTDC estimates unknown dynamics of a system using a time delay estimator (TDE). The TDE is based on the past expected unknown dynamics which is delayed by one sampling period. Therefore, the DTDC cannot properly compensate for the high frequency components of unknown dynamics. Moreover, the transfer gain of the TDE from unknown dynamics to the TDE error is more than 0 dB in the high frequency ranges. This means that the high frequency components of unknown dynamics can be amplified in the TDE error. A conventional solution of the high frequency unknown dynamics is applying a recursive structure to the DTDC law. The effect of the recursive structure is the same as that of a low-pass-filter, which attenuates the high frequency components of the DTDC law. However, the recursive structure may make the system response slow. This paper presents a new filtering method which attenuates the high frequency components of the estimated unknown dynamics only. The update law of the TDE is separated from the DTDC law and a recursive scheme is applied to this update law. Simulation results show that the proposed method can attenuate the high frequency components of the estimated unknown dynamics without slowing the system response down. © 2015 Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems - ICROS.

A series distributed generation (DG) units based islanding microgrid configuration and the corresponding power sharing method are proposed in this paper. Unlike a conventional islanding microgrid where parallel DG units are connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) to supply electricity to loads in a cooperative manner, this paper discusses the possibility of using series connected low voltage (LV) converters as an alternative solution. It has been demonstrated that the DC/DC boost conversion in the back stage of a conventional DG unit can be removed from this proposed microgrid. In addition, via a very simple power factor-frequency inverse droop control, an accurate real and reactive power sharing can be simultaneously achieved in multiple series DG units. Note that the effectiveness of the proposed power sharing control does not rely on the communications between DG units or the knowledge of detailed microgird circuitry parameters. Therefore, the challenging power sharing problems in conventional islanding microgrids is perfectly solved with this proposed configuration and the control method.

The investment to DERs (Distributed Energy Resources) in the emerging smart energy grids are critical to achieving goals for environmental protection, reducing energy costs and coping with failures. An architecture and market mechanism is needed to support the participation of owners of DERs that aim to maximize the profit from this investment within a system that is also able to achieve grid level objectives. Due to privacy requirements, owners of DERs should not be requested to divulge information such as the state of charge of a local energy store, and yet such information is very relevant for operating the grid in such a way that meets the objectives of the owner of the grid, who may operate a large power plant that is ultimately responsible for satisfying the load that cannot be covered by DERs. This paper builds on previous work to propose a modular multi-agent architecture in which prosumer agents represent DER owners and an auctioneer agent represents the power plant operator. The architecture allows the different agents to use different algorithms aiming at satisfying local and grid level objectives while meeting the privacy requirement. In particular, a fuzzy logic based algorithm is developed for the distributed automation platform that supports the architecture. The capability of the architecture to flexibly evaluate the performance of various algorithms from the DER owner and plant operator perspective is demonstrated with a case study in the district heating domain.

The emergence of LED luminaires that can be dimmed rapidly and frequently enables radical innovations in street lighting automation. It is possible to save considerable amounts of energy by adjusting street lighting according to the movements of individual road users. Since the same lights are often used for illuminating both vehicle lanes and sidewalks, it is necessary to detect both vehicles and pedestrians. A simulation of vehicle and pedestrian traffic is interfaced to a distributed street lighting system based on the IEC 61499 standard, in order to quantify the energy saving potential of a street lighting automation system that exploits real-time sensing information of individual road users while conforming to traffic safety related requirements for road lighting.

Induction motors are in the heart of almost every production line especially due to their robustness under harsh environments. Nevertheless, even induction machines are prone to faults. Among them, the faults related to the breakage of rotor bars have received special attention by the research community with a number of methods proposed both for the case of steady state as well as for transient operation. For the latter, methods relying on the analysis of the start-up transient have proven to be able to effectively isolate the faulty component that is created by the asymmetry caused by the bar breakage. However, very little work has been done concerning the soft starting of induction machines. In this work, preliminary results of the application of a symbolic time series technique for the analysis of the transient, when the motor is controlled by a soft starter, will be presented and experimentally evaluated. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper investigates about the impact of the number of levels and of the corresponding modulations angles on the mitigation of harmonics in cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters. A mathematical model to reduce Nth odd harmonics from the output voltage of a multilevel converter is represented as a constrained optimization problem. It is further transformed in an unconstrained optimization problem that can be solved more simply by using the particle swarm optimization method. By varying the modulation index, the procedure guarantees the constancy of the output voltage amplitude.
