The number of users employing multimedia services in cellular networks has been increased dramatically in the last decade. Multimedia services are more demanding compared to traditional voice services in terms of bandwidth availability and integrity. The capacity and the bandwidth reservation on demand according to QoS requirements are key concepts in mobile cellular communications. The available frequency spectrum is limited and the demand for enhanced mobile user facilities is increasing day by day, hence the channels must be reused as much as possible to increase the system capacity. Existing and proposed channel assignment strategies have to be transformed to support efficiently the new demanding multimedia services. Through this paper we present a review of the most known channel assignment strategies, as well as their QoS aspects and we propose new DCA variations and a channel architecture adapted to QoS requirements for supporting multimedia services. We also present some strategies, models and conclusions for algorithm evaluation based on experimental results.

Piezoelectric microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators on Si can be a potential candidate to replace discrete L-C components in series resonant converters. In this paper, ring shaped piezoelectric (AlN) micro-resonators on Si are reported. Having vibration in contour mode, these resonators can achieve resonant frequency as low as 87.28 MHz. Recently, we have fabricated high Q (>1000) piezoelectric resonator using a CMOS compatible fabrication process, and experimental characteristics of these devices are included in this paper. Contour mode AlN MEMS resonator with moderately low resonant frequency and motional resistance has been reported for the first time (the resonant frequency and motional resistance of the fabricated device is 87.28 MHz and 36.728 Ω respectively). Finally, an efficiency analysis of the series resonant topology has been performed using the equivalent electrical circuit model of the resonator.

This paper develops a discrete-time variable structure control method for servo drives. The objective is to achieve tungless control in industrial servo systems. The developed control method is experimentally evaluated for load variations and parameter uncertainties. Experiments are performed on typical automation applications: a 400 W servo motor with a belt-drive connection and a 400 W servo motor with a ball-screw connection. The experimental results show that the developed discrete-time variable structure controller provides better performance characteristics than the conventional commercial servo controller. © IFAC.

This paper presents a new tuningless control algorithm for a DC servo drive to minimize parameter tuning efforts by an operator. This tuningless algorithm is based on a nonlinear control method, utilizing variable structure control and disturbance compensator. Experiments are performed using a 400 W Tamagawa servo motor and a belt drive load, which is a common combination in automation applications. The performance of the developed method is compared with the conventional servo drive controller, which is manually tuned by an experienced engineer. The experimental results show that the developed tuningless control exhibits excellent performance and is applicable to various load conditions. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents a new seven-level voltage source converter (VSC) for high-power medium-voltage (MV) motor drives. The proposed topology is composed of H-bridge connection of two nested neutral-point-clamped (NNPC) converters called 7L-HNNPC converter. This converter has interesting features such as operating over a wide-range of output voltages particularly for a range of (10kV-15kV) without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series, high quality output voltage, less number of components in compare to other classical seven-level topologies. A novel SPWM technique has been developed for the proposed 7L-HNNPC converter to control and balance of the flying capacitors. The outstanding property of the control strategy is that the control can be applied independently to each leg of the converter that reduces the complexity of the controller significantly. The performance of the proposed converter is studied under different operating conditions in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The feasibility of the proposed converter is evaluated experimentally on a scale-down prototype.

The emerging LED technology enables intelligent street lighting that is based on sensing individual vehicles and dimming street lights accordingly. The potential energy savings are considerable, exceeding 50% on roads with low traffic. A possible reason why such applications are not yet emerging are financial uncertainties about the size of the savings, which are needed to motivate the investment. Another barrier to adoption are uncertainties about whether proposed approaches meet standards and regulations for traffic safety. In this paper, an energy efficient street lighting design that meets regulations for rural roads is implemented with the IEC 61499 distributed function block architecture. The intelligent lighting is co-simulated against a traffic simulation using cellular automata. Virtual metering in the IEC 61499 application is used to quantify energy savings in simulation scenarios with different traffic volumes. Across a range of traffic volumes representative of rural roads, our simulations indicate that smart dimming can deliver energy savings of 14% to 70%, with savings increasing as traffic density decreases.

Active fault isolation of parametric faults in closed-loop MIMO systems are considered in this paper. The fault isolation consists of two steps. The first step is group-wise fault isolation. Here, a group of faults is isolated from other possible faults in the system. The group-wise fault isolation is based directly on the input/output signals applied for the fault detection. It is guaranteed that the fault group includes the fault that had occurred in the system. The second step is individual fault isolation in the fault group. Both types of isolation are obtained by applying dedicated auxiliary inputs and the associated residual outputs. © IFAC.

Network-wide local unambiguous failure localization (NL-UFL) [1] has been demonstrated as an interesting scenario of monitoring trails (m-trails). It attempts to enable every node to autonomously localize any failure event in the network in a distributed and all-optical manner by inspecting a set of m-trails traversing through the node. This paper investigates the m-trail allocation problem under the NL-UFL scenario by taking each link and node failure event into consideration. Bound analysis is performed using combinatorial group testing (CGT) theory and this is followed by the introduction of a novel heuristic on general topologies. Extensive simulation is conducted to examine the proposed heuristic in terms of the required cover length and the number of m-trails to achieve NL-UFL.

Global path planning as applied to mobile robotics can be approached in a similar fashion as classic optimization problems involving combinational constraints (e.g. the Traveling Salesman Problem). A single, exact optimal solution for the shortest path may not exist, and obtaining near-optimal solutions selected and ranked by criteria, or deemed “good-enough”, can satisfy the problem. An overview is provided on a select subset of naturally inspired iterative search algorithms; Simulated Annealing (SA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) have all been studied and applied to the task of mobile robotic path planning. These three techniques or algorithms (respectively) represent a broader range of naturally inspired physical processes, evolutionary or biological processes, and animal kingdom behavioral examples. It has been demonstrated that these algorithms have been utilized on their own, or as part of a collaborative hybridization of iterative algorithms and heuristic modifiers, to effectively balance the constraints, strengths and weaknesses in a given path planning approach. A brief contextual summary of current literature provides insights regarding implementation of this category of algorithms, and suggests approaches for future experimentation and research in this topic area.

While there is intense global research activity addressing problems underpinning the re-engineering of the electrical power grid, thermal energy grids are likely to play an increasing role in energy systems. This paper describes an on-going effort in hybrid modeling and co-simulation of the physical and control domains of district heating networks. The focus is on modeling each domain using semantics and tools natural to each; we also describe the challenges of, and a method for, integration and synchronization of the simulation models in each domain. Here, the dataflow model of computation used by Simulink provides a flexible industry-grade environment for modeling the dynamics of heat energy flows, and the IEC 61499 automation architecture facilitates distributed systems modeling and enables rapid deployment to field hardware. At the application level, we show how this framework enables the study of energy flows within a producer/consumer (prosumer) and the analysis of the economic value of integrating distributed solar thermal generation and storage into a prosumer participating in a district heating network.
