A smart electric grid incorporating local generation and storage is an area of active research in the industrial automation community. Very little attention has been given to similar possibilities in hot water grids that are used extensively for district heating in several countries, especially in Central and Northern Europe. In this paper, possibilities for heat trade in such a grid are investigated through simulation, considering the thermo-hydraulic properties of such a grid. For the distributed automation of several independent producer-consumers, an event based IEC 61499 solution is presented. The paper proposes a co-simulation environment for a dynamic process simulator and an event based control system, which is applied to the district heating case.

The reliability theory used in the design of complex systems including electric grids assumes random component failures and is thus unsuited to analyzing security risks due to attackers that intentionally damage several components of the system. In this paper, a security risk analysis methodology is proposed consisting of vulnerability analysis and impact analysis. Vulnerability analysis is a method developed by security engineers to identify the attacks that are relevant for the system under study, and in this paper, the analysis is applied on the communications network topology of the electric grid automation system. Impact analysis is then performed through co-simulation of automation and the electric grid to assess the potential damage from the attacks. This paper makes an extensive review of vulnerability and impact analysis methods and relevant system modeling techniques from the fields of security and industrial automation engineering, with a focus on smart grid automation, and then applies and combines approaches to obtain a security risk analysis methodology. The methodology is demonstrated with a case study of fault location, isolation and supply restoration smart grid automation.

A novel fault integration method is proposed in this paper for manufacturing system models given in the form of timed colored Petri nets. The faults are assumed to have a stochastic nature and are represented in the form of transitions firing in stochastic way with known fault probabilities in the system model. A novel fault effect propagation method was also developed, that can be used to compute the probabilities of the possible faulty and non-faulty intermediate and final states of the system using the probabilities of faults and the occurrence graph. The faultless and fault containing models were implemented in CPNTools both for non-timed and timed cases. A software module was also developed for the proposed probabilistic fault propagation analysis. The proposed methods and tools were demonstrated using a simple case study.

A novel on-line diagnosis method is proposed in this paper that uses a qualitative dynamic model of the system and its colored Petri nets model. The model contains both the normal and the possible faulty operational modes of the system. The deviation between the normal and faulty modes is characterized based on P-HAZID tables. The actual system state can be searched on the occurrence graph constructed in advance. Starting from this node the possible consequences and root causes can be determined on-line with traversing on the graph. The proposed method is illustrated on simple case studies.

Active fault isolation of parametric faults in closed-loop MIMO systems are considered in this paper. The fault isolation consists of two steps. The first step is group-wise fault isolation. Here, a group of faults is isolated from other possible faults in the system. The group-wise fault isolation is based directly on the input/output signals applied for the fault detection. It is guaranteed that the fault group includes the fault that had occurred in the system. The second step is individual fault isolation in the fault group. Both types of isolation are obtained by applying dedicated auxiliary inputs and the associated residual outputs.

This paper describes a new method for how interfering MIMO links might transmit more effectively in a random access network. We assume perfect transmitter-side channel state information, zero-forcing pre-coding to guarantee no interference on links that have already won access, and zero-forcing receiver processing at the still-contending links to suppress interference from the links that have already won. We define an effectiveness metric, the Instantaneous Equivalent SNR Percentile (IESP), in which the Equivalent SNR is the SNR of a single-input-single-output (SISO) link that would have the same capacity of a MIMO link after its interference constraints have been met and the IESP is the percentile of the Equivalent SNR, assuming independent Rayleigh fading. We propose that fairness among heterogeneous contending links be realized by giving the shorter contention window to the link with the higher IESP based on its own distribution, enabling links with few antennas to compete with links that have many antennas. Through simulation of the sum capacity of the winning set of links, the proposed contention window design is shown to provide a higher sum capacity than contention based on equal-sized windows.

Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) technology attempts to optimize the efficiency of solar energy production systems and models for determining the exact module performance are needed. In this paper, a CPV module is studied by means of atmospheric conditions obtained using an automatic test and measuring system. (CORBFN)-R-2, a cooperative-competitive algorithm for the design of radial basis neural networks, is adapted and applied to these data obtaining a model with a good level of accuracy on test data, improving the results obtained by other methods considered in the experimental comparison. These initial results are promising and the obtained model could be used to work out the maximum power at the CPV reporting conditions and to analyze the performance of the module under any conditions and at any moment.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators on Si have the potential to replace discrete L-C components in series resonant converters. With acoustic coupling rather than inductive coupling, these MEMS resonators achieve better electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance, and reduce size, weight and volume of the power converter. In this paper, ring shaped piezoelectric micro-resonators are presented. These resonators vibrate in contour mode achieving a low resonant frequency, thus implementation in power converter circuits is possible. COMSOL Multiphysics simulation results have been provided showing the mode of vibration at resonance. A CMOS compatible fabrication process has been proposed and implemented. In addition, the fabricated devices have been characterized and experimental results are detailed. Finally, a PSIM simulation of a series resonant inverter incorporating the equivalent electrical model of the resonator has been performed.

Common-mode voltages (CMVs) can lead to premature failure of the motor insulation system in medium-voltage (MV) current source drives. This paper proposes a novel space-vector modulation (SVM) based gating strategy that can significantly reduce the peak CMV by optimizing the switching sequences for MV current source converters (CSCs). In the proposed method, the switching sequence of one side of the CSC is fixed and the sequence of the other side is selected to produce the minimum peak CMV. The optimization process is based on the CMV calculation for all the possible switching sequence combinations. To validate the proposed concept, different SVM based control schemes for CSCs are investigated. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed concept. In addition, the proposed strategy can be easily implemented in software and requires no extra hardware. By using this method, the CMV stress of the motor is reduced significantly and the size/weight for the common-mode choke can also be reduced. © 2013 IEEE.

The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has several three-level flying capacitor (3L-FC) submodules in cascade. To balance the submodule capacitors voltage, this paper describes a dynamic voltage balancing algorithm based on the carrier phase shifted pulse width modulation (CPS-PWM) scheme. The submodules are controlled based on the instantaneous value of capacitor voltage and the direction of current. For the selection of the submodules, the maximum and minimum voltage submodule selection logics are designed. These voltage logics are generating an index number for each submodule based on the relative comparison of capacitors voltage. Finally the switching state of the submodules is generated by comparing the submodule index number with the dynamic reference index number. The performance of the proposed voltage balancing algorithm at different operating conditions is evaluated on 6kV/2MVA MMC system with the MATLAB simulation and the corresponding results are presented. In addition, the performance comparison of MMC with 3L-FC and conventional two-level half bridge (2L-HB) submodules is presented.
