In this paper, we propose a method based on the SVM algorithm to recognize dynamic hand gestures. The information of motion trajectory is captured by a leap motion in three-dimension space. A new methodology of feature extracting is proposed to guarantee the length of samples being the same. The elements of feature vectors are ranged according to two different criteria: one is the amplitude of the variation of orientation angles, and the other criterion is the order of the appearance of features. Experimental results show that this method can classify the dynamic hand gestures effectively.

Real-time performance can be greatly improved, if the early recognition is implemented. In this paper, a dynamic hand gesture early recognition system is proposed. The system can recognize the gesture before it is completed. Our method is based on the Hidden Semi-Markov Models. Three-dimensional information of the gesture trajectory collected by leapmotion is the main data we used. Experiments on the dataset which we established demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

We show a method to detect accurate 3D position of people from multiple views, regardless of the geometry of the ground. In our new method we search for intersections of 3D primitives (cones) to find positions of feet. The cones are computed by back-projecting ellipses covering feet in input images. Instead of computing complex intersection body, we use approximation to speed up intersection computing. We found that feet positions are determined accurately, and the height map of the ground can be reconstructed with small error. We compared our method to other multiview-detectors - using somewhat different test methodology -, and achieved comparable results, with the benefit of handling arbitrary ground. We also present accurately reconstructed height map of non-planar ground. Our algorithm is fast and most of steps are parallelizable, making it possibly available for smart camera systems.

In this paper, we propose a new reflectance separation model to separate the diffuse and specular reflection components. The model is based on a two-dimensional space called Ch-CV space, which is spanned by maximum chromaticity (Ch) and the coefficient of variation (CV) of RGB color. The space exhibits a more direct correspondence to diffuse and specular reflection components than the RGB color space, as well as the HSI color space. Under the whitened illumination, the surface points with the same diffuse chromaticity have the same slope in Ch-CV space. Based on these properties, we propose a slope-based region growing method to implement an image segmentation in the specular regions, and to separate the reflection components for each segmented region. The comparison experiments with several state-of-the-art algorithms show its superior capability to separate the specular and diffuse reflection components. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In general, power converters are being operated in closed-loop systems, and any characteristic variations in one component will simultaneously alter the operating point of other components resulting in a shift in overall reliability profile. This interdependence makes the reliability of a converter a complex function of time and operating conditions;and therefore, the application may demand periodic replacement of converters to avoid downtime and maintenance cost. By knowing the present state of health and remaining life of a power converter, it is possible to reduce the maintenance cost for expensive high-power converters. This paper presents a reliability analysis for a boost converter although this method could be used to any power converter being operated in closed-loops. Through the conducted study it is revealed that the reliability of a boost converter with control loops degrades with time, and this paper presents a method to calculate time varying reliability of a boost converter as function of characteristic variations in different components in the circuit. In addition, the effects of operating and ambient conditions have been included in the reliability model as well. It was found that any increase in the ON-resistance of the MOSFET or equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the output capacitor decreases the overall reliability of the converter. However, any variation in the capacitance has more complex impact on the converter's reliability. This conducted research is a step forward to the power converter reliability analysis because the cumulative effect of multiple degraded components has been considered in the reliability model.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators on Si have the potential to replace the discrete passive components in a power converter. These devices not only can reduce the size and weight of the converter but also can facilitate the implementation of power converter on a chip. In this paper, a contour mode MEMS resonator has been presented that can achieve resonant frequency in the range of several MHz, and the operating principles of the device have been discussed in detail. This device was simulated in COMSOL Multiphysics, and a resonant converter has been simulated in PSIM to harvest energy from a thermo electric generator. The equivalent electrical model of the MEMS resonator was incorporated into that circuit validating the feasibility of using MEMS resonator in power conversion systems. Detailed fabrication process of the device has been presented and implemented at University of Utah's Nanofab. Initial experimental characteristics of the resonator have been included in the paper.

Multilevel modular capacitor clamped dc-to-dc converter (MMCCC) is a two-phase modular switched capacitor converter. The conversion ratio of an ideal MMCCC is an integer and depends on the number of active modules. An MMCCC circuit can achieve fractional conversion ratios by varying the operating frequency or using the pulse dropping technique (PDT). Using PDT, the converter remains at the same state for longer time duration depending on the required conversion ratio needed. Therefore, PDT adds an additional degree of freedom to achieve variable conversion ratio at a constant frequency. Practical performance of switched-capacitor voltage regulator circuits are generally analyzed by measuring the equivalent output resistance of the converter at different frequencies. State space modeling technique has been used in this paper for measuring the equivalent output resistance when pulse dropping technique has been applied to MMCCC circuit. This analysis will define the boundaries of the PDT operation needed to achieve continuous conversion ratio, and the constraints on the output load resistance needed to achieve the required dynamic range of conversion ratio has been discussed as well. Detail of the state space modeling has been provided in this paper. Finally, the equivalent output resistance derived using the presented model has been validated using simulation and experimental results.

The goal of this study is to discover, analyze, compare, and interpret diffused reflectance polarimetric signatures from lung cancer cells through time series analysis techniques, by using recently invented efficient polarimetric backscattering detection techniques. Specifically, different time series analyses, relying on linear and generalized linear modeling, have been investigated, with special emphasis on the Granger test for the time series. The experimental results indicate that statistically enhanced discrimination between normal and different types of lung cancer cells and stages can be achieved based on the pairwise comparisons of the time series diffused reflectance signal intensities and depolarization properties of the cells.

This paper propose a torque performance improving method for the bipolar excitation using the commercial three-phase full bridge converter based Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) motor drive system. In order to control the current in each phase more flexible without any coupled effect among phases, the 2 units or double standard three-phase full-bridge power modules are used. The concept of current command with superimposed DC offset for the bipolar excitation scheme of those double standard three-phase full-bridge converter bases SRM drive system is proposed for torque performance improvement. The relation between the current and generating torque based on the proposed excitation scheme and power circuit configuration is analyzed, and the condition for the maximum average torque is also determined. The proposed method is verified on 1.5 kW, 3-phase 6/4 pole SRM.

A PV ground-fault detection technique using spread spectrum time domain reflectometry (SSTDR) method has been introduced in this paper. SSTDR is a reflectometry method that has been commercially used for detecting aircraft wire faults. Unlike other fault detection schemes for a PV system, ground fault detection using SSTDR does not depend on the amplitude of fault-current and highly immune to noise signals. Therefore, SSTDR can be used in the absence of the solar irradiation as well. The proposed PV ground fault detection technique has been tested in a real-world PV system and it has been observed that PV ground fault can be detected confidently by comparing autocorrelation values generated using SSTDR. The difference in the autocorrelation peaks before and after a ground-fault in the PV system are significantly higher than the threshold set for ground-fault detection.
