Common-mode voltages (CMVs) can lead to premature failure of the motor insulation system in medium-voltage (MV) current source drives. This paper proposes a novel space-vector modulation (SVM) based gating strategy that can significantly reduce the peak CMV by optimizing the switching sequences for MV current source converters (CSCs). In the proposed method, the switching sequence of one side of the CSC is fixed and the sequence of the other side is selected to produce the minimum peak CMV. The optimization process is based on the CMV calculation for all the possible switching sequence combinations. To validate the proposed concept, different SVM based control schemes for CSCs are investigated. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed concept. In addition, the proposed strategy can be easily implemented in software and requires no extra hardware. By using this method, the CMV stress of the motor is reduced significantly and the size/weight for the common-mode choke can also be reduced. © 2013 IEEE.

The analysis of two heuristic supervised learning algorithms for text categorization in two dimensions is presented here. The graphical properties of the bidimensional representation allows one to tailor a geometrical heuristic approach in order to exploit the peculiar distribution of text documents. In particular, we want to investigate the theoretical linear cost of the algorithms and try to push the performance to the limit. The experiments on Reuters-21578 standard benchmark confirm that this approach is an alternative to the standard linear learning models, such as support vector machines, for text classification. Moreover, due to the fast training session, this approach may also be considered as a support for text categorization systems for fast graphical investigations of large collections of documents.

This study develops and implements a SoC-based HW/SW (Hardware-Software) codesign for an intelligent diagnostic system. To improve the efficiency of the VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design process, the components of the intelligent diagnostic system are designed in the form of SIP (Silicon Intellectual Property) modules. The SIP modules, including the CPU module, the GPIO (General Purpose I/O) module and the NN (Neural Network) module, are then integrated to form the complete intelligent diagnostic system. In constructing the system, an embedded processor is employed to run software programs. In addition to integrating the hardware architecture, this study also develops application software, comprising a bootloader, a UARTcomm module and a main program for human machine interface, to drive the embedded processor. The SoC-based HW/SW codesign method employed in this study increases the efficiency of the system design process and reduces the rebuild time. The results of the experimental trials verify the successful performance of the developed intelligent diagnostic system. © 2010 IEEE.

The Bee-Ant Task Allocation method is proposed as a model for multi-agent task allocation, which is inspired by the swarm intelligence mechanism of social insects. The Bee-Ant Task Allocation method is a variation of the Ant Colony Optimization, in which the task selection model of honeybees is adopted. Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) are a viable solution for addressing the requirements of Internet of Things (IoT) applications that can tolerate sporadic updates, possibly only in the uplink (from the field towards the cloud and the user) direction. LoRaWAN is currently the most diffused example of LPWAN, exploiting LoRa radios. LoRa, an enhanced version of chirp spread spectrum modulation, trades off the radio sensitivity for the data rate, permitting extensive area coverage. However, the price is a relatively long frame duration, leading to high collision probability in dense, asynchronous scenarios;fortunately, polarity inversion minimizes collisions between uplink and downlink traffic. Therefore, adaptive strategies (based on some feedback from the backend) have also been suggested to adapt the data rate depending on the environment condition dynamically. This work compares the ADR (Adaptive Data Rate) and the ADP (Adaptive Data Payload) strategies when bidirectional traffic exists, using a purposely designed simulator. Results considering a different number of gateways show that ADP tries to maximize the amount of data effectively received in both direction but suffer from the adoption of longer frame duration, leading to higher collision probability. In contrast, ADR tries to force the adoption of the fastest data rate, limiting the overall amount of transferred data. © 2023 IEEE.

The process of treatment of industrial water by the magnetic method has been considered in the work. An installation for complex iron removal that allows using a number of parameters to control the process has been developed. The structural scheme of relationships of parameters of the process has been received on the basis of the conducted researches, and further, it has been described by dependence. A conducted computer experiment showed that the process of iron removal from industrial water is not significantly affected by the flow velocity of the fluid. © 2020 IEEE.

Recent developments in the Internet have significantly increased the human capability to obtain information from and reach remote locations. In parallel, the Micro Mechanical and Electronic Systems (MEMS or Microsystems) technology makes it possible for the human to sense and act in a microenvironment. Combined, the Internet and MEMS, will produce a new technology for humans to sense and act in a remote micro-environment. This new technology has potential impact on several fields one of which is biomedical engineering. In this paper, we will present our ongoing development of polyvinylidence fluoride (PVDF) micro-tips as rateof-force sensors for tele-micromanipulation forcefeedback control of micro-mechanical devices over the Internet. Internet based teleoperation between Hong Kong and Michigan State was demonstrated using an event-based control scheme, which ensured stability and synchronization. Control was enhanced by multimedia feedback, which included, in addition to the traditional video, force feedback. The force fed back augmented the limited information supplied by visual feedback. However, the use of force feedback for microenvironments has difficulties, such as proper scaling, that should be carefully studied. We believe this project will eventually make a great impact to the globalisation of MEMS foundries because it will allow global users to micro-assemble and manipulate surface micromachined devices from their laboratories, and hence, reduce the time from design to production significantly. © 2000 IEEE.

Despite extensive study on it for decades, stereo vision is still widely regarded as a difficult problem. What makes it difficult is the stereo correspondence problem. Earlier Aloimonos and Herve (1992) proposed an algorithm that avoids the need of establishing correspondences across the stereo images. The algorithm however assumes a particular stereo configuration: the parallel-axes stereo geometry. This paper describes how the restriction could be removed and provides, in a closed-form format, an extension of the algorithm for general stereo geometry. © 2003 IEEE.

We propose to use attribute grammars for recognizing normal events and detecting abnormal events in a video. Attribute grammars can describe constraints on features (attributes) in addition to the syntactic structure of the input. Events are recognized using an extension of the Earley parser that handles attributes and concurrent event threads. Abnormal events are detected when the input does not follow syntax of the grammar or the attributes do not satisfy the constraints in the attribute grammar to some degree. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method for the task of recognizing normal events and detecting anomalies in a parking lot. © 2006 IEEE.
