This paper presents an artificial immune pattern recognition (AIPR) approach for the damage detection and classification in structures. An AIPR-based Structure Damage Classifier (AIPR-SDC) has been developed by mimicking immune recognition and learning mechanisms. The structure damage patterns are represented by feature vectors that are extracted from the structure's dynamic response measurements. The training process is designed based on the clonal selection principle in the immune system. The selective and adaptive features of the clonal selection algorithm allow the classifier to generate recognition feature vectors that are able to match the training data. In addition, the immune learning algorithm can learn and remember various data patterns by generating a set of memory cells that contains representative feature vectors for each class (pattern). The performance of the presented structure damage classifier has been validated using a benchmark structure proposed by the IASC-ASCE (International Association for Structural Control - American Society of Civil Engineers) Structural Health Monitoring Task Group. The validation results show a better classification success rate comparing to some of other classification algorithms. © 2009 SPIE.

In 3DICs heat dissipating devices are stacked directly on top of each other leading to a higher heat density than in a comparable 2D chip. 3D integration also moves the majority of active devices further away from the heatsink. This results in a degraded thermal path which makes it more challenging to remove heat from the active devices. Gradient FireBolt was used to perform an appropriate 3D thermal analysis on a 1024-point, memory-on-logic 3DIC FFT processor for synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The chip was simulated with a spatial resolution of 80 nm, and was modeled to include the effect of each line of interconnect, as well as each via and fill structure exactly as drawn in the layout. Large isolated temperature spikes were found near groups of clock buffers at the edge of the SRAMs on the middle tier. It was found that lowering the simulation resolution and using composite thermal conductivities failed to accurately predict the location of these tentpoles.

Fractional calculus is a generalization of the integration and differentiation to the fractional (non-integer) order. In this paper, we devised a fractional-order periodic adaptive learning compensation (FO-PALC) method for cogging effect minimization for permanent magnetic synchronous motors (PMSM) position and velocity servo system. Cogging effect is a major disadvantage of PMSM. In fact, the cogging force in PMSM is a position-dependent periodic disturbance. In our FO-PALC scheme, in the first trajectory period, a fractional order adaptive compensator for cogging effect is designed to guarantee the boundedness of all signals. From the second repetitive trajectory period and onward, one period previously stored information along the state axis is used in the current adaptation law together with a fractional order low pass filter. Both stability analysis and experimental illustrations are presented to show the benefits from using fractional calculus in periodic adaptive learning compensation for cogging effects in PMSM servo systems.

The development of advanced solar thermal parabolic trough collectors fields for electrical power generation calls for the conception of simple but effective temperature control strategies capable to cope with the nonlinearities and the uncertainties that typically affect this kind of plants, which are mainly due to the variability of thermal and optical parameters among the collector modules. For plants in which multiple temperature measurements are available for each string of collectors, as in the case of the molten-salt technology under exam, an adaptive control strategy is proposed. It relies on the combined use of a discrete-time nonlinear model-based controller with an on-line parameter adaptation mechanism based on error-projection. Under a persistency of excitation assumption, the input-to-state stability of the resulting closed-loop system with respect to bounded unstructured uncertainties can be proven. Simulation results show that the proposed control policy allows to effectively control the plant in various operating scenarios.

EDGeS is an European funded Framework Program 7 project that aims to connect desktop and service grids together. While in a desktop grid, personal computers pull jobs when they are idle, in service grids there is a scheduler that pushes jobs to available resources. The work in EDGeS goes well beyond conceptual solutions to bridge these grids together: it reaches as far as actual implementation, standardization, deployment, application porting and training. One of the work packages of this project concerns monitoring the overall EDGeS infrastructure. Currently, this infrastructure includes two types of desktop grids, BOINC and XtremWeb, the EGEE service grid, and a couple of bridges to connect them. In this paper, we describe the monitoring effort in EDGeS: our technical approaches, the goals we achieved, and the plans for future work.

In societal applications of systems science where competition under conflicting interests is pertinent to, the decision making faces situations in which one must decide whether to cooperate or not with a competitor or opponent. Each of the opponents (‘players’) has as well as carries own missions within the society out. At least two if not more parties need to make decisions under fully or partially conflicting objectives when involved in a dispute or open conflict. By and large decisions must be made under risk, uncertainty, and incomplete or fuzzy information implying large amounts of linguistic and probabilistic information. For cases of two opponents, the synergy of fuzzy control approach and matrix games seems rather effective to represent and find solutions for such multi-criteria conflicting situations. The fuzzy procedure is used to take into account some of the subjective attitudes of the decision makers that are difficult to model using classical game theory.

To overcome the limitation of the pulse-coupled neural network (PCNN) for its application in processing of color images, the hue data were introduced into the basic PCNN model by adopting the signal generator to control the internal activities of cells. The pixels with the same grey level and different hue data were pulsed separately in the double-input PCNN. It is indicated that the double-input PCNN can achieve the segmentation of color images and is robust to noises. The experimental results on synthetic images and natural images verify the validity of the model.

New coordination scheme for multi-robot systems based on state space models

A new coordination scheme for multi-robot systems is proposed. A state space model of the multi- robot system is defined and constructed in which the system＇s initial and goal states are included along with the task definition and the system＇s internal and external constraints. Task accomplishment is considered a transition of the system state in its state space （SS） under the system＇s constraints. Therefore, if there exists a connectable path within reachable area of the SS from the initial state to the goal state, the task is realizable. The optimal strategy for the task realization under constraints is investigated and reached by searching for the optimal state transition trajectory of the robot system in the SS. Moreover, if there is no connectable path, which means the task cannot be performed Successfully, the task could be transformed to be realizable by making the initial state and the goal state connectable and finding a path connecting them in the system＇s SS. This might be done via adjusting the system＇s configuration and/or task constraints. Experiments of multi-robot formation control with obstacles in the environment are conducted and simulation results show the validity of the proposed method.

The Bee-Ant Task Allocation method is proposed as a model for multi-agent task allocation, which is inspired by the swarm intelligence mechanism of social insects. The Bee-Ant Task Allocation method is a variation of the Ant Colony Optimization, in which the task selection model of honeybees is adopted. Experimental results indicate the adaptability and robustness of the Bee-Ant Task Allocation method. © 2008 IEEE.
