Systems and control are all around us. System view, understanding systems and how they are controlled is important for everyone. The behavior of systems is determined by some fundamental principles which can be understood by everyone. The main principles governing systems and control are presented on different levels. The first level is dedicated for everyone. Comics-like interpretation is provided with explanations. The second level discusses the main topics dedicated for the interested students. Several case studies demonstrate how system view is considered in different areas of life. With this approach systems in different areas of life could be better understood contributing to better decisions influencing their performance. The third level provides deeper insight into some aspects of modern mathematical system theory, to geometric view of control systems. The material is available on a website on the internet. © 2016

Photovoltaic (PV) power plants are a form of renewable energy and their importance is increasing all around the world. In Brazil, the PV power plants connected to the grid are regulated through a credit compensation, in which the prosumer pays the difference between consumed and generated energy. Medium voltage consumers pay different prices for the energy consumed in peak load time and off-peak load time. This paper compares the return of investments of a PV plant without and with energy storage systems. This latter injects active power during peak load time. Results show that although the plant without storage presents lowest costs, the solution with batteries can be more profitable depending on the energy tariff and the equipment cost.

Inverted pendulum systems have an important place in practice for control problems due to their nonlinear structures. It is a very difficult task to control the orientation and speed of objects and robots which are free in three dimensions. These systems constitute the substructure of many advanced systems. Conventional actuators may not be used in such applications due to various limitations. Under these circumstances usage of reaction wheels come into prominence. Reaction wheel based systems are used for orienting, coordinating and balancing of spacecraft, transport systems, and other such systems. In this study, dual axis self-balancing reaction wheel based inverted pendulum system which is a basis for many complex systems has been designed, manufactured and controlled.

This paper describes a data logger system based on microcontroller (wind speed, wind direction, humidity and temperature) and storing data in the SD (Secure Digital) memory card. The evaluation of the wind potential available at a particular site is needed to determine the viability or not the wind turbine installation. However, data acquisition systems for wind prospecting and monitoring of the wind power plants use high cost and precision sensors (anemometer, thermo-hygrometer, wind vane). Therefore, this low cost data acquisition system presented in this paper has characteristics of some commercial data loggers and it is appropriated to study of the feasibility of the installing micro wind turbines for distributed generation. © 2016 IEEE.

A novel cooperative tracking and interception strategy, which exploits information sharing and missile staggering, is presented. The key idea underlying the approach is to exploit the superior information collected by the leading missile to improve the interception performance of the trailing missiles. For tracking a maneuvering target, the paper derives a nonlinear adaptation of an interacting multiple model filter in cooperative and non-cooperative estimation modes. The optimal staggering between the missiles is derived based on a linear model and a deterministic approximation of the stochastic estimation process. An extensive Monte Carlo study, in a nonlinear two-dimensional simulation of a ballistic missile defense scenario, is used to demonstrate the viability of the proposed strategy. It is shown that, for a two-on-one interception engagement, the trailing missile's estimation performance, in the information-sharing mode, substantially improves, when compared to that of non-cooperating missiles. Combining this estimation improvement with guidance laws that utilize target acceleration yields a dramatic improvement in the team's closed loop interception performance. © 2016, Israel Annual Conference on Aerospace Sciences. A cooperative guidance law for a team of interceptors trying to intercept, from multiple directions, an evading target is proposed. An example scenario of interest is that of intercepting an aerial target, such as a ballistic missile, from multiple directions. The engagement is analyzed in the framework of a linear quadratic zero-sum two-person differential game, where the team of interceptors constitutes one of the adversaries and the target the other. The obtained guidance law for the team of interceptors enables enforcing a relative geometry in-between the group of missiles and the target. Such an approach is superior, in the sense of the required control effort, to that where each interceptor independently enforces, using a one-on-one strategy, a preselected intercept angle that satisfies the relative intercept requirement. A nonlinear two dimensional simulation is used to investigate the performance of the obtained cooperative guidance law and it is shown that the interceptors' acceleration requirements are comparable to conventional guidance laws, that do not impose an angular constraint at interception. © 2016, Israel Annual Conference on Aerospace Sciences. Discrete time robust linear quadratic Gaussian controller with loop transfer recovery (LQG/LTR) considering the augmented system with the addition of backward Euler integrator at controller output is applied to a practical quadruple tank system. The plant developed in this work is a benchmark of a multivariable two-input-two-output (TITO) system with coupled channels, frequently used in academic works, mainly due to its versatility for generating minimum phase or non-minimum phase systems and to the coupled channels characteristic. For the LQG/LTR controller, the singular values of the open loop transfer function are matched in the frequency range from zero up to the Nyquist rate using the same approach considered for continuous time system design. Simulation and practical experiments are performed in order to validate the controller design considering set-point tracking and disturbance rejection. It is possible to observe that the resulting controller performs very well tracking step and sinusoidal inputs and rejecting sinusoidal disturbances. Practical and simulated results are very similar to each other.

Various research on heart rate variability (HRV) have focused on the characteristics of the peaks and the valleys of a heart rate graph and most have been analyzed using medical devices. This paper developed a driving physiological indicator extraction method. The method is based on a pulse signal detection with a feature point identification model and an abnormal signal detection combined with a revamp model. According to physiological theory and the relationship between pulse and ECG readings, the pulse feature points can be detected. This method is easier and more accurate than the existing wavelet pulse signal detection method, which can be used in the wearable devices, such as the smart band and the smart watch. The method was also validated efficiently and accurately in the experiments. © 2016 ASCE.

In this paper, three kinds of the inverter topologies for the variable speed drive of 2-phase induction motor are compared and analyzed. The 2-phase inverters are classified into 2-leg, 3-leg, and 4-leg types depending on the number of power switching devices. And they use the output voltage vectors of the different forms according to the inverter topologies. Based on the comparative analyzed results, the effective values of output voltage have been defined by the linear modulation range. Therefore, the motor design guideline is proposed in order to decide a rated voltage of 2-phase induction motor according to the inverter topologies. Also, the computer simulations are carried out to verify the output voltage and current characteristics of each inverter topology. Copyright © The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Future Air Traffic Management (ATM) demands that flights to be more efficient while maintaining safety and improving flight predictability. Two major research groups Single European Sky (SESAR) and Next Generation Air Transportation system (NEXTGEN) are progressively researching on the concept of 4D trajectory management which aims to improve flight efficiency by integrating time into the 3D trajectory. Therefore the implementation of time-space based flight guidance controller will be investigated in this paper. Firstly, the reference tracking error equations with respect to the spatial variable is defined and later transformed into a reference tracking error with respect to time. Using nonlinear dynamic inversion, the control law is established to make the aircraft accurately follow 3D+T desired trajectories. A simulation is performed to explore the feasibility of the proposed guidance control law and it was found that the proposed guidance control law is able to accurately follow a 3D+T reference trajectory at the same time follow the overfly time constraint. © 2016 IEEE.
