Web Laboratories (WebLabs) are essential resources for engineering education. Within this type of laboratory, a new Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) package design model is shown in this work. The proposed model is based on a set of resources that form a complete educational structure; taking into account the sequencing and navigation among the elements that compose it. In addition, it can be uploaded to a Learning Management System (LMS), offering to the students an effective tool to work with web labs. The package is structured in 4 sections or pages: Introduction, Theory, Virtual/Remote Laboratory (VRL) and Assessment; where the last performs an automated verification of the work done by the learner. In this way, one of the advantage of this methodology is that the instant results of the assessments, performed by the SCORM package, is stored in the inner LMS. Some WebLabs performing this methodology are being developed in the University of Jaén. In this work, an example is developed: "Modelling of Dynamic System: DC Motor". This WebLab is used in the Industrial Automation course that is included in several Industrial Engineering degrees.

Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) are of great importance in identifying the genetic variants associated with traits/diseases. Due to the high number of candidate SNPs some filtering techniques are necessary to be applied. The aim of the study was to develop the comprehensive approach allowing for detailed analysis of both SNP-gene and SNP-miRNA-gene relations. We elaborated and optimized the novel signal analysis pipeline improving significantly the results of the analysis on genotype-phenotype interplay. Direct links between genotype results and gene expression levels were enriched by detailed analysis of SNP-miRNA-gene interactions at both mature miRNA structure/seed region and target binding site level. The proposed technique was applied to the data on lymphocyte radiation response and increased by almost 100% number of potential functional SNPs.

We introduce a novel distributed control architecture for disturbances attenuation in heterogeneous platoons of linear and time-invariant autonomous agents that inherits the performance achievable by the leader-follower control policies. We provide a Youla-like parameterization for the class of all distributed controllers such that the sparsity constraints are imposed on the controllers' left coprime factors, outlining a new concept of structural constraints in distributed control. The proposed scheme lends itself to optimal controller design via norm based costs, it guarantees string stability and completely eliminates the accordion effect from the behavior of the platoon. The distributed controller is proven to attain global optimality for heterogeneous platoons and ℋ 2 costs and can easily reconfigure such as to remain optimal during formation merging/exiting maneuvers. The scheme is amenable to a GPS time base synchronization mechanism, allowing for the exact compensation of the time delays induced by the wireless communications.

The paradigm of Petri nets offers a rich modeling power that has been successfully exploited in many different application domains as manufacturing, logistic, traffic, computer and biological domains. In order to develop and analyze Petri models in an efficient and systematic way, appropriate software tools are required. Among the existing software platforms for scientific software development, MATLAB places at the user's disposal a large set of toolboxes with an inutitive graphical interface. This paper describes some of the existing Petri net toolboxes that have been developed on MATLAB, and that cover the needs for the modeling and analysis of discrete, continuous and hybrid systems.

Bond graphs are a natural method for representing power flows in physical systems and they represent the most basic graphical paradigm that is still fully object-oriented. This paper describes a new version of BondLib, the Modelica bond graph library. The library was created for Modelica with graphical Dymola support, and its object-oriented design allows the wrapping of bond graph models offering a user-friendly environment for modeling physical system in multiple energy domains. The new improvements try to reduce the deployment and training cost for end-users by making the error diagnostics easier.

This paper proposes a method to recover from the failure or loss of a subset of agents in a distance-based formation problem, where the system is initially deployed forming a virtual shield embedded in the 3D space. First, a distributed algorithm is proposed to restore the topology, which is a Delaunay triangulation. After that, the nodes execute a distance-based distributed control law that considers adaptive target distances. These values are computed in parallel by the nodes, which try to reach an agreement with some constraints, given by the desired shield shape. The updating policy is based on events. The results are illustrated through simulation examples.

Hearing loss impacts over 5% of the world's population, a percent rising due to aging populations, noise exposure, and chronic health conditions. To address this, we developed a non-invasive hearing device designed for individuals with hearing challenges that limit the use of hearing aids. The proposed device integrates a set of Bluetooth headphones with a smartphone, that process the ambient sound in real time through a software application and delivers to the hear impaired patient via bone conduction, bypassing traditional auditory pathways. Laboratory tests confirmed that the proposed device effectively replicates auditory perception. The developed device offers an accessible and user-friendly alternative to patients who cannot use traditional hearing aids.

Cardiac conditions are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. To address this, we designed a model that can detect cardiac conditions from a patient's electrocardiogram (ECG). This will convert the 1D ECG signal into a 2D scalogram using wavelet transforms with Morlet wavelets. With the help of a network based on the AlexNet convolutional neural network, it distinguishes between a normal ECG signal and one indicative of arrhythmia or congestive heart failure. The resulting model performs well, achieving a classification accuracy of 92.20% and providing a robust approach for detecting cardiac conditions.

This paper presents a signal processing framework for automatic anxiety level classification in a virtual reality exposure therapy system. Two types of biophysical data (heart rate and electrodermal activity) were recorded, pre-processed and passed through a feature extraction procedure that provided input for the real-time anxiety level classification algorithm. We showcase the mathematical and engineering techniques behind the procedures and conclude with the challenges encountered in our research and future development ideas. The proposed method provides a good estimate of the level of anxiety while having at the same time a reduced level of complexity, allowing implementation on equipment with limited computing resources. © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Weld seam recognition is the key technique in visual tracking research. Based on the weld image features, the image preprocessing and the linear feature extraction method of the weld seam recognition are designed. The extended adaptive median filtering method and modified Otsu adaptive threshold selection method for image segmentation are used in the image pre-processing process, to remove the noise and compress the image data. Through comparing with several other edge operators, the Roberts operator is chosen to achieve the goal of detecting the welding edge. Finally, the weld seam information is extracted through Hough transform and a satisfied result can be acquired. The study provides a theoretical support for the following designing of the weld tracking system. © 2015 SERSC.
