The algorithms for optimal and quasi-optimal estimation of the arrival time of a Gaussian random pulse with a priori known and inaccurately known duration, which is observed against the background of white Gaussian noise, is synthesized. The comparative analysis of the Bayesian (quasi-Bayesian) and maximum likelihood (quasi-likelihood) measurers of the arrival time is performed. The results of the statistical computer simulation of estimation algorithms are presented.

The intensive use of social media through mobile devices has leveraged the development of digital diary applications that keep track of social events as well as geotagged multimedia content. In a large crowd where users with cultural diversity perform spatiotemporal activities, such geotagged multimedia content facilitates users' navigation through points of interest (POI) based on their preferences. This work presents a crowdsourced geo-spatial multimedia data aggregation tool that allows users to develop diary chapters relevant to forthcoming users' spatio-temporal activities. Our proposed solution provides users with the ability to add POIs through an authoring environment with multiple dimensions, such as spatio-temporal filters, multimedia categories, and event types. Specific application domains such as emergency situations, leisure trips, journalism, and tourism can take benefit of this technique. This authoring environment also visualizes geo-spatial multimedia content for collocated points of interest (CPOI) with moving users' timelines. We plan to integrate our proposed authoring environment as a proof of concept into our existing large-scale crowdsourcing environment that is envisioned to support millions of users during the Hajj 2015 event.

Current general-purpose memory allocators do not provide sufficient speed or flexibility for modern high-performance applications. To optimize metrics like performance, memory usage and energy consumption, software engineers often write custom allocators from scratch, which is a difficult and error-prone process. In this paper, we present a flexible and efficient simulator to study Dynamic Memory Managers (DMMs), a composition of one or more memory allocators. This novel approach allows programmers to simulate custom and general DMMs, which can be composed without incurring any additional runtime overhead or additional programming cost. We show that this infrastructure simplifies DMM construction, mainly because the target application does not need to be compiled every time a new DMM must be evaluated. Within a search procedure, the system designer can choose the "best" allocator by simulation for a particular target application. In our evaluation, we show that our scheme will deliver better performance, less memory usage and less energy consumption than single memory allocators.

A trimaran is a multihulled boat consisting of a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls, attached to the main hull with lateral struts. There have been many studies highlighting that a trimaran takes many advantages over other types of hulls especially the roll performance, because of the greater resistance to rolling that the outrigger hulls offer. In order to study the rolling motion of a trimaran, an accurate roll motion model is needed. The rolling motion of a trimaran is inherently nonlinear due to both nonlinearities in the restoring moment and damping moment. This paper presents an estimation method to predict the linear and nonlinear roll damping parameters based on free roll decay experiments of a trimaran, whose outrigger hulls are movable both along the longitudinal and transverse direction. The estimation method is based on least square support vector regression (LS-SVR) theory. In order to verify the performance of this new estimation method, the least square (LS) estimation method is also applied to identify the parameters. Both methods show satisfying performances, however models generated by LS-SVR shows less accumulated errors than models generated by LS.

The DEVStone benchmark allows us to evaluate the performance of discrete-event simulators based on the DEVS formalism. It provides model sets with different characteristics, enabling the analysis of specific issues of simulation engines. However, this heterogeneity hinders the comparison of the results among studies, as the results obtained on each research work depend on the chosen subset of DEVStone models. We define the DEVStone metric based on the DEVStone synthetic benchmark and provide a mechanism for specifying objective ratings for DEVS-based simulators. This metric corresponds to the average number of times that a simulator can execute a selection of 12 DEVStone models in one minute. The variety of the chosen models ensures we measure different particularities provided by DEVStone. The proposed metric allows us to compare various simulators and to assess the impact of new features on their performance. Considering potential threats to cyber-physical systems such as component faults and stealthy cyber-attacks, an adaptive observer-based threat discrimination method is proposed for identifying the occurring threat type. Typically, stealthy attacks have only weak effects easily obscured by disturbances on the system outputs. To solve this problem, a parameter adaptation algorithm based on a newly designed dynamic adaptive gain generator is proposed, aiming at improving the sensitivity of the adaptive threat discrimination scheme to potential threats. Only the strictly positive real condition of the proposed gain generator sufficiently ensures the stability of the adaptive observer error system. A moment-matching method is then developed to determine the proper parameters of the gain generator, allowing for the improvement of the sensitivity of the threat discriminators. A numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is presented.

The project of E-Simulator is under way at Hyogo Earthquake Engineering Research Center (E-Defense) of National Research Institute of Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Japan, which facilitates the world's largest shaking table. The E-Simulator uses the parallel finite element (FE) analysis software package called ADVENTYRECluster (ADVC) as a platform. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of collapse behavior of the 4-story steel building frame that is the specimen of the full-scale total collapse shaking-table test conducted in September 2007 at E-Defense. It is shown that elastoplastic dynamic responses can be estimated with good accuracy using a high-precision FE-analysis without resort to macro models such as plastic hinge and composite beam effect.

This paper presents the results of 44 well known memory tests applied to 1896 1M*4 DRAM chips, using up to 96 different stress combinations with each test. The results show the importance of selecting the right stress combination, and that the theoretically better tests (i.e. those covering different functional faults) also have a higher fault coverage. However the currently used fault models still leave much to be explained; e.g., the used data backgrounds and address orders show an unexplainable large variation in fault coverage.

Indoor positioning systems using Visible Light Communication (VLC) have potential applications in smart buildings, for instance, in developing economical, easy-touse, widely accessible positioning system based on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Thus using VLCs, we introduce a new fuzzy-based system for indoor localization in this paper. The system processes data from transmitters (i.e., anchor nodes) and delivers the calculated position of a receiver. A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is then employed to obtain the optimal configuration of the proposed Fuzzy Logic Controllers (FLCs). Specifically, the proposed PSO technique optimizes the membership functions of the FLCs by adjusting their range to achieve the best results regarding the localization reliability.
