This paper addresses the two-layer routing problem in waveleng.h division multiplexed (WDM) optical mesh networks subject to resource constraints and generalized waveleng.h continuity (GWC) constraint. The GWC constraint is a relaxed waveleng.h continuity constraint in networks which have different kinds of waveleng.h conversion capabilities. As an improvement over the existing approach which represents each waveleng.h separately in the auxiliary graph, we introduce a largely simplified link bundled auxiliary graph (LBAG) and propose a new,method to find paths and assign waveleng.hs for new lightpaths subject to the GWC constraint. We propose a constrained grooming algorithm based on the LBAG model. We also propose two grooming policies which improve the existing grooming policies by integrating the waveleng.h and transceiver metrics and considering the relative resource utilization ratio. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the grooming policies in terms of blocking probability.

The NPHS2 gene is expressed in the podocytes and encodes the integral membrane protein named podocin, which is believed to play an important role in the renal function of glomerular filtration. Mutations in this gene could cause serious renal functions disorder. In this study we used data mining techniques and bioinformatic tools to search for the mouse ortholog of NPHS2 related gene, which might be valuable for future studies of renal diseases. We employed repeated cycles of searching, comparison, and assembling for extending the assembled EST sequences. The discovered gene sequence mslp2, which is an ortholog of human SLP2 gene, was found to have a total leng.h of 1253bp, with the amino acid coding region located in 32nt-1093nt. It was verified with RT-PCR and RACE techniques for assuring its biological accuracy and then registered with the GenBank. Using ClustalW for similarity comparisons between mslp2 and human SLP2 genes, the similarity is as high as 88% for nucleotide and 92% for amino acid sequences. In conclusion, we proposed a method for rapid identification of the mouse ortholog gene from the human genome.

Using optimized ion implantation, we have fabricated high performance 2-pole and 3-pole CPW filters on Si substrates at /spl sim/30 GHz, with very narrow 1.0 (3.1%) GHz and 0.75 (2.5%) GHz pass-band as well as small insertion loss. Microstrip filters on Si show small 3.2 dB loss at 27 GHz, which has smaller size than CPW case without the large coplanar ground planes. In contrast, the nonimplanted filters failed due to the high substrate loss.

For the first time, we demonstrate 3D integration of self-aligned IrO/sub 2/(Hf)/LaAlO/sub 3//GOI CMOSFETs above 0.18 /spl mu/m Si CMOSFETs. At EOT=1.4nm, the novel IrO/sub 2/(Hf) dual gates (4.4 and 5.1 eV workfunction) on control 2D LaAlO/sub 3//Si devices have high electron and hole mobilities of 203 and 67 cm/sup 2//Vs. On the 3D structure the LaAlO/sub 3// GOI shows even higher 389 and 234 cm/sup 2//Vs mobilities, and process compatibility with current Si VLSI. The higher drive current, larger integration density, shorter interconnects distance, and simple process of 3D approach can help solve the AC power issue and 2D scaling limitation.

We present a stochastic tracking algorithm for surveillance video where targets are dim and at low resolution. The algorithm builds motion models for both background and foreground by integrating motion and intensity information. Some other merits of the algorithm include adaptive selection of feature points for scene description and defining proper cost functions for displacement estimation. The experimental results show tracking robustness and precision in a challeng.ng video sequences.

A novel active queue management scheme is proposed to employ in the routers that deal with both the best-effort traffic flows and multimedia traffic flows. Most of the available active queue management schemes consider only TCP flows, which results in unexpected congestion when dealing with multimedia flows. The queue size and packet receiving rate are the common parameters to calculate the marking probability in the queue. The use of round trip time (RTT) in the process of marking probability calculation has advantages over other approaches. We discuss the applicability of our approach when the framework in our earlier paper is used for rate adaptation in multimedia flows. With the use of RTT in packet marking probability calculations, we can assure rate reduction in both best-effort and multimedia flows before a queue gets exhausted. The most influential feature of the proposed approach is that it can work with the existing systems. The soundness of the proposed approach is inferred from the simulation results.

The simulation results and analysis of a novel transmission technique namely double carrier modulation/differential detection are presented, we show how the differential detection technique improves the system performance significantly, we also demonstrate that this technique overcomes the problems associated with voltage threshold in conventional systems, and how it suggest the possibility to double up the conventional long distance without amplifiers with a BER of as good as 10-13 at 2.5 Gbps over 150 Km distance with 0 dBm transmit power. The new scheme also shows a much slower degradation with distance than that of conventional IM/DD system. © 2003 IEEE.

ESD and EMI problems and their possible solutions are addressed for the multi-layer power distribution network of high-speed digital systems. To prevent system from ESD damage, split I/O port ground with stitching element such as conductor or inductor is proposed, while stitching and decoupling capacitors are proved to be very effective for reducing electromagnetic radiation from the split power plane. Simulations based on 3D-Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method are utilized for the analysis of practical high frequency multi-layered PC mainboard.

Field tests demonstrated the value of enhancements that enable an advanced nonintrusive load monitoring system to tackle complex monitoring environments. Nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) can determine the operating schedule of electrical loads in a target system from measurements made at a centralized location, such as the electric utility service entry. In contrast to other systems, NILM reduces sensor costs by using relatively few sensors.

We developed technologies for transmitting video contents over wireless platforms, and encapsulated these video delivery and presentation technologies into a client system for accessing a multimodal digital video library. The mobile access system, iVIEW client, provides a user interface that meets the challeng. of rich multi-modal information presentation on wireless hand-held devices. An XML schema is employed to organize the multi-modal metadata for better data interoperability. Furthermore, we investigated a context awareness mechanism complementary to the XML schema to facilitate scalable degradation under restricted resources in wireless application environment. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of the iVIEW system and its associated technologies for video information management and delivery on pervasive devices over wireless networks.
