Managing multi-task systems using workflow

This paper presents a survey of current research in the areas of workflow and workflow management systems. We begin by introducing the underlying problems and show how they can be addressed by workflow systems. We review and examine the terminology, concepts, methodologies, and problems in the relevant areas. The general requirements of workflow management systems are also introduced and discussed. We present the modelling and specification of both tasks and workflows. We also discuss the dependencies that exist between tasks and how to best define, model and enforce them. An important part of this survey is an examination of key products, including their characteristics and applications. The article is concluded by introducing some research issues which we believe are critical for the advancement of the theory of workflow as well as the design and usage of workflow management systems.

This paper presents an asynchronous checkpointing protocol for mobile computing environments-combined with a selective sender message logging for avoiding the rollbacks. The message sending/receiving state of mobile host detemines when independently to take the local checkpoints at mobile host. And only the potential orphan message is selectively logged when a mobile host takes a checkpoint. The logs of potential orphan message prevents the mobile hosts from rolling back and is maintained on the MSS. For the recovery dependency relationship of mobile hosts is saved as Message Dependency Tree and is maintained at the MSS. The logs of potential orphan messages and MDTs are used for the consistent global state. Our protocol distributes the load of checkpointings and message loggings over MSSs and mobile hosts so that the communications between MSSs and mobile hosts are reduced and recovery is possible as though at disconnections. © 13th International Conference on computers and Their Applications 1998, CATA 1998. We propose the adaptive separated queueing Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching model for the effective processing of the various types of multimedia traffic by virtue of ATM switching network with multiple outlets which is the essential part of B-ISDN. This proposed model employs the dynamically separated buffering mechanism in the processing of two classes of cell, realtime service traffic and non-realtime service traffic, at the output buffer to enhance the overall QoS(Quality of Service). For the performance evaluation of our proposed method, we have done both analytical modeling and simulation. The experimental results show that our proposed queueing strategy is quite appropriate to the ATM switch with multiple outlets and can guarantee the QoS requirements of the incoming multimedia traffic.

It is significant that nearly all data warehouses are dependent on relational database technology, yet the relational database, provides little to no real support for temporal data. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain accurate information for the time-varying data. Temporal data in a data warehouse can provide more accurately summarized information by managing time-varying data. In this paper, we propose a methodology for temporal query by combining a temporal query process layer with data warehouse and a methodology for integrating more temporal relations of mismatched temporal domains into a data warehouse. At the same time, we propose temporal aggregate function which is the fundamentals of temporal data summarization and suggested summarization methodology which make it possible to summarize time interval relation. © 13th International Conference on computers and Their Applications 1998, CATA 1998. This paper introduces an intelligent underwater vehicle. The architecture of the control system and especially the mission execution module are givea An artificial neural network is used to deal with the non-liner dynamics of underwater vehicle and the unpredictable disturbances. Abilities on motion control, autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance of this system were tested by a series of experiments in a lake. The results show that the performance of the system is stable and reliable. © 1998 IEEE.

In this work we extend the radix-4 CORDIC algorithm to the vectoring mode (the radix-4 CORDIC algorithm was proposed recently by the authors for the rotation mode). The extension to the vectoring mode is not straightforward, since the digit selection function is more complex in the vectoring case than in the rotation case;as in the rotation mode, the scale factor is not constant. Although the radix-4 CORDIC algorithm in vectoring mode has a similar recurrence as the radix-4 division algorithm, there are specific issues concerning the vectoring algorithm that demand dedicated study. We present the digit selection for nonredundant and redundant arithmetic (following two different approaches: arithmetic comparisons and table look-up), the computation and compensation of the scale factor, and the implementation of the algorithm (with both types of digit selection) in a word-serial architecture. When compared with conventional radix-2 (redundant and non-redundant) architectures, the radix-4 algorithms present a significant speed up for angle calculation. For the computation of the magnitude the speed up is very slight, due to the nonconstant scale factor in the radix-4 algorithm.

One year he worked with “Energoproject-MDD”- Engineering and Contracting Co. in Belgrade as an engineer in designing power plants and substations. In late 1988 hejoined the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Belgrade first as an associate teaching assistant and then (since late 199 I) as teaching assistant at the Dept. of Power Converters and Drives. Between March 1993 and January 1996 he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Newcastle. Australia. at the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Since February 1996 he is lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tasmania Austnlia. The paper presents the overview of load modelling for power-system damping and stability studies with main conclusions summarized from previous research. The attempt has been made to present a cross-section of the most exploited existing load models together with the most important conclusions drawn from their implementation in power-system stability programs. The current trends and latest results in the domain of damping of electromechanical oscillations in power systems are also presented. The effects of load dynamics on damping of electromechanical oscillations were analyzed on the basis of one of generic load models proposed in the past. The recent results further encourage investigation in this area and highlights the importance of proper load modelling.

Soliton transmission using periodic dispersion compensation has recently become an attractive method to reduce amplitude and timing errors by means of soliton power enhancement in low path-averaged dispersion transmission lines. We report here the results of error-free soliton transmission exceeding 10 Mm in a dispersion-mapped system consisting of mostly normal dispersion fiber, but in which a low path-averaged anomalous dispersion is obtained. A consequence of low dispersion in soliton transmission systems using frequency-sliding techniques is a stronger impact from the frequency-sliding filters on the pulse dynamics.

The problem of designing memory tests is to establish a relevant set of fault models only consisting of those faults which are shown to be possible to occur in practice. Thereafter, it is a challeng. to the test designer to design an optimum test covering the faults of the established fault models. A new fault model, the disturb fault model, is introduced. The notation of linked faults is established and it is shown that march tests can only detect a subset of all linked faults. Thereafter, the universe of linked faults is reduced to the set of realistic linked faults. Last, the effectiveness of the realistic linked fault model is shown via new tests with a higher fault coverage and a shorter test leng.h.
