A new approach to the face recognition problem is presented through combining Fourier descriptors with principal component analysis (PCA) and neural networks. Here the faces are vertically oriented frontal view with scaling, orientation, expression, and illumination changes. There are many research activities on face recognition using the face space which is described by a set of eigenfaces. Each face is efficiently represented by its projection onto the space expanded by the eigenfaces and has a new descriptor. Previous work on eigenface has shown that it performs well only with changes in expression, but results are poor in the case of rotating, or scaling the input face. In order to enhance the performance of the eigenfaces technique to accommodate other variations of the input face, the Fourier vector of each face is projected in the eigenspace. Neural networks are used to recognize the face through learning the correct classification of these new descriptors. A real-time system has been created which combines the face detection and recognition techniques. A recognition rate of 91% has been achieved over real tests. It is also shown that our proposed system behaves accurately in the case of rotated or scaled faces as well as for changes in expression. © 2000 IEEE.

We developed technologies for transmitting video contents over wireless platforms, and encapsulated these video delivery and presentation technologies into a client system for accessing a multimodal digital video library. The mobile access system, iVIEW client, provides a user interface that meets the challeng. of rich multi-modal information presentation on wireless hand-held devices. An XML schema is employed to organize the multi-modal metadata for better data interoperability. Furthermore, we investigated a context awareness mechanism complementary to the XML schema to facilitate scalable degradation under restricted resources in wireless application environment. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of the iVIEW system and its associated technologies for video information management and delivery on pervasive devices over wireless networks. In this paper we present an experimental comparative study of most of the rejuvenation techniques developed so far, divided into two groups: i) simple approaches: physical node reboot (switch off/on), VM reboot, OS reboot and standalone application restart, and ii) sophisticated methods: OS fast reboot, and application restart with hot standby mode. In our experiments we evaluate the availability and performance overheads incurred by software rejuvenation. We also analyze the selected rejuvenation techniques efficiency to mitigate the aging effects. We inject memory leaks at application level to simulate the aging effects. The results show that the availability and performance overheads introduced by the rejuvenation strategies are specific to the granularity level. © 2011 IEEE.

Cache coherence protocols are important for operating a shared-memory multiprocessor system with efficiency and correctness. Cache coherence protocols have become increasingly complex because physical memory is logically distributed, so that it is difficult for programmers to understand the view of logical shared-memory systems. Since random testing and simulations are not enough to validate the correctness of these protocols, it is necessary to develop efficient and reliable verification methods. Through the use of the Symbolic State Model (SSM) of Fong Pong (1995), we verified a directory-based protocol called the RACE (Remote-Access Cache coherence Enforcement) protocol. The protocol is verified for any system size, without state-space explosion. © 1999 IEEE.

Control of Uncertain Nonlinear systems using Ellipsoidal Reachability Calculus

This paper proposes an approach to algorithmically synthesize control strategies for discrete-time nonlinear uncertain systems based on reachable set computations using the ellipsoidal calculus. For given ellipsoidal initial sets and bounded ellipsoidal disturbances, the proposed algorithm iterates over conservatively approximating and LMI-constrained optimization problems to compute stabilizing controllers. The method uses first-order Taylor approximation of the nonlinear dynamics and a conservative approximation of the Lagrange remainder. An example for illustration is included.

Using the strong trapping capability of novel AlN (κ=10), low voltage drop in high-κ layers and high workfunction IrO2 with low leakage current, the SiO2/AlN/HfAlO(κ=17)/IrO2 device shows good 85°C memory integrity of fast 100μs erase, large 3.7V ΔVth and 1.9V extrapolated memory window for 10-year retention at low 13V program/erase. These increase to 5.5V ΔVth and 3.4V for 85°C 10-year retention at 1ms erase.

We have applied the Backpropagation Neural Network on time series stock data as a learning rule to improve the prediction rate. We chose data whose stock price showed steadiness and used as the training data and test data. Test was performed while varying the number of hidden layer and hidden nodes each time. As the result shows, the satisfied result was obtained and the use of the backpropagation neural network model improved the performance of the stock price prediction for system trading in KOSPI.

This paper presents the results of static lateral loading test performed on a traditional timber farmhouse in Japan. The aim of this research is to understand the horizontal load carrying capacity and the failure mode of this type of house using a full-scale experiment. In the experiment, the maximum horizontal load was 45 kN. The results of this test are discussed in comparison with results of other previous research. Static analysis using a theoretical model considering the structural performance of joints and the deterioration of timber is also performed.

This paper describes an automated algorithm for shadow region detection in Intra Vascular Ultrasound images, using an adaptive threshold method for threshold selection and contour approach for border detection. As shadow appears behind the calcification plaque, it makes it difficult or impossible for the dark region to process automatically around these regions. The acoustic shadow usually follows the hard plaque in IVUS images and it can distinguish calcification regions from other bright regions. Therefore we propose to use Otsu. Threshold for calcification plaque segmentation and the Active contours without edge method for shadow region separation of the image. Results show that the proposed meth efficiently detected shadow regions even in complicated images. This proposed algorithm presented specificity of 86% and sensitivity of 93%.

In Japan, the planning and design of drainage and vent systems for 2-3-storey low-rise houses is not clearly defined, even by SHASE-S206 "Standard for Plumbing and Sanitary systems" by the Society of Heating, Air-conditioning and Sanitary eng.neers of Japan. Hence, house development companies and building and construction companies use their own devices to design and execute plumbing work. Considering this current situation, this study aims to develop a model of a fitting having a swivel air admittance function, which is specifically for drainage systems for detached houses;verify the effectiveness of the fitting by means of carrying out evaluations on its influence on drainage performance;and provide experimental data which can contribute to the planning and design of drainage systems for detached houses.
