One of the most promising approaches for high speed network for integrated service application is fast packet switching, or asynchronous transfer mode(ATM). A number of designs have been proposed for implementing ATM switches. Banyan networks have been proposed for an ATM switch because of their self-routing capability and suitability for VLSI implementation. It has been noted that output buffered ATM switch has problems because of its numerous cross points and increased internal switching speed. In this paper, we introduce a new ATM switch architecture based on Banyan interconnection networks. Its hardware is less complex than that of output queueing switch. The reduction in the hardware complexity can be obtained without either losing the self-routing property or suffering from performance degradation under uniform and nonuniform traffic. The switch is constructed with shift network. It has internal buffer that is interconnected in the Banyan networks. The shift networks allow us to send a cell to the correct output port It needs only the destination address to route a cell regardless of the state of the switch. Although the switch becomes blocking, it retains the self-routing property and achieves the maximum throughput of 100% with only small additional delay. © 1992 IEEE.

This paper presents optimum pairing and ordering (P/O) conditions for simultaneous reduction in total capacitance, sensitivity and output noise of cascade SC filters. First, investigating relations among conditions proposed for minimizing these three parameters independently, termed, CTmin, Smin and Nmin conditions, we make it clear that there is no P/O assignment with which the three parameters can be simultaneously minimized. Then we verify that Nmin condition is valid in reducing two other parameters. Trade-off optimum conditions are proposed by combining Nmin with Smin and CTmin. These conditions can limit the number of P/O assignments, in which an optimum P/O assignment for simultaneous reduction of three parameters can be searched out easily. Depending upon applications, the trade-off optimum condition can be slightly modified by adjusting the proportion of CTmin Smin and Nmin. Efficiency of the proposed trade-off optimum conditions is confirmed through computer simulation using several kinds of filters. © 1992 IEEE.

A nonlinear adaptive detector/estimator is introduced for single and multiple radar data processing. The problem of target detection from returns of monostatic radar(s) is formulated as a nonlinear joint detection/estimation problem on the unknown parameters in the signal return. The problems of detecting the target and estimating its parameters are considered jointly. A bank of spatially and temporally localized nonlinear filters is used to estimate the a posteriori likelihood of the existence of the target in a given space-time resolution cell. Within a given cell, the localized filters are used to produce refined spatial estimates of the target parameters. A decision logic is used to decide on the existence of a target within any given resolution cell based on the a posteriori estimates obtained from the likelihood functions. Simulation results show excellent detection capabilities and excellent resolution in target parameter estimation for both single and multiple sensor data. © 1992 IEEE.

The authors present a general approach to determining the number of sinusoids present in measurements corrupted by additive white Gaussian and nonGaussian noise. The approach involves the simultaneous application of maximum a posteriori detection and nonlinear estimation using either the extended Kalman filter when the noise is Gaussian, or the extended high order filter when the noise is nonGaussian. The problem is formulated as a multiple hypothesis testing problem with assumed known a priori probabilities for each hypothesis. The advantage of the approach lies in the potential to accommodate time-varying as well as time-invariant parameters in the measurement model. Experimental evaluation of the approach demonstrates excellent performance in selecting the correct model order and estimating the system parameters even for signal-to-noise ratios as low as -5 dB. © 1992 IEEE.

The authors address the problem of high-resolution parameter estimation of superimposed sinusoids using nonlinear filtering techniques. Six separate nonlinear filters are evaluated for the estimation of the parameters of sinusoids in white and colored Gaussian noise. Experimental evaluation demonstrates that the nonlinear filters perform very satisfactorily (close to the Cramer-Rao bound) for reasonable values of the initial estimation error. A major advantage of using nonlinear filtering methods for harmonic retrieval is that the filters can be applied to time-varying process models as well. © 1992 IEEE.

An effective method for visual pattern recognition using morphological techniques is presented. It is shown that it can be successfully used for the recognition of deformed letters. The method extracts morphological information by the successive dilation of an idealized letter set. At each stage a properly defined similarity index is computed. The maximum values of the similarity index for each stored letter are compared and are used for the classification decision. Classification results are presented for a set of deformed capital English letters with a realistic level of deformation. Skeletonization of the deformed pattern is shown to improve the performance of the classification method. The described method can be easily implemented using a parallel architecture.< >

The procedure of harmonic insertion is generalized in this paper. Analytical expressions of the voltage spectra are derived. The insertion of the 3rd harmonic to the modulating signal, which is of particular interest, is considered as a special case. It is demonstrated in this case that the fundamental harmonic component of the phase and the line‐to‐line voltage is not affected by the insertion of the 3rd harmonic for sufficiently high values of the chopping ratio. However it has been shown that the higher harmonic spectrum is significantly improved as compared to the case of pure sinusoidal modulation. For different values of the fundamental component the optimal values of the amplitude of the third harmonic to be inserted have been calculated so that the distortion factor of the higher harmonic spectrum is minimized. Other cases of harmonic insertion are also considered which provide spectrum efficiency improvement. Experimental results are given which have been obtained by means of a microcomputer controlled PWM generator constructed for this purpose. Copyright © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The purpose of this paper is to study adaptive predictive coding of digitized images using novel two-dimensional (2-D) multiplicative autoregressive (MAR) models. A general stability theorem for 2-D MAR image models with causal non-symmetric halfplane supports is presented and two different models are introduced. A new necessary condition for a graph G to be the visibility graph of a simple polygon is given: each 3-connected component of G must have a vertex ordering in which every vertex is adjacent to a previous 3-clique. This property is used to give an algorithm for the distance visibility graph problem: given an edge-weighted graph G, is it the visibility graph of a simple polygon with the given weights as Euclidean distances? © 1991 ACM.

With an ever increasing body of software to maintain and a small number ofexperiencedpersonnel, it is critical to improve software maintenance practice. One difficult problem maintenance organizations must address is how to document program evolution. Problem or change reporting and tracking is a key aspect of recording changes to large software systems. Large software systems which evolve over a long period of time magnify the need for organized change tracking due to the number and extent of the changes made. This paper describes a method to incorporate problem solving information in a change tracking database. Problem solving is discussed with regard to structured problem solving techniques for isolating difficult problems. A relational database structure and queries to access the database are discussed. An example of how the change tracking system supports the maintenance problem solving process is also included. © 1991 IEEE.
